I feel like this all could of be avoided if they called the Venom symbiote, "the other", since that's what Eddie called it a few times in his first appearances
This entire dilemma is solved if you just say "the Venom symbiote" Since I'm also a movie fan I've grown accustomed to calling the symbiote Venom depending on the situation but I feel like the comics need to genuinely set a system for it instead of how vague it's been depending on who's writing
The problem with that is that's it's not really a name. It's like expecting people to regularly call someone "The Smith Human" to refer to a man with Smith as his last name or as his profession. It's a mouthful, and it's more of a descriptor than a name. This is why such examples often get shortened in regular speech. In that case, just calling the man Smith. In this case, just calling the symbiote Venom. A classic example of this is Dr. Frankenstein's monster. Most people just know him as Frankenstein instead. This is why a unique name is important for unique characters unless the goal is to have the person referred to by their shortened name.
There's Also Mac Gargan as Venom... And Peter as Venom (In Specific Storylines) and Lee Price as Venom, Flash Thompson as Agent Venom. While I do believe Venom is a Title, I feel like the Symbiote adopted the name Venom for itself as well for it's own survival and compatibility with other's since it needs emotion to survive and most humans are willing to vent their feelings to those their familiar with, and a name can help ease people into more comfortable role with someone, especially if it's a familiar name like "Venom" in a city that is familiar with the name.
I think it’s fine for it to be the venom symbiote and it’s just venom when bonded with specific people, considering Eddie isn’t the only venom and there’s people like Agent Venom. I think it is the symbiotes name. It just needs the clarification.
I like that moment in Cates' run when the symbiote shares its name with Dylan and it's not even vocalized, it's a transmitted emotion. Ewing never expanded on that seed of an idea in his run... that there's an emotional aspect to symbiotes so the whole idea now seems like a waste.
I fully agree with not liking the symbiote being called venom on its own but at this point, I’ve just learned to accept it. at least there’s a little moments in the comics a couple years back between Dylan and the symbiote where he asked what its real name was and it was a sweet, touching moments, that involves feelings rather than spoken words.
The problem is trying to give it a name. Anyone who actually tries to give the symbiote a name will receive tons of backlash, either from the people who know it as "Venom," or from the people that the name isn't good enough for the symbiote.
@betterlatethannever4529 that was before it took on the identity of Venom and at that time it didn't really talk at all until it became a full on villain
1) because Venom is (and always has been) associated with the alias, therefore the symbiote 2) symbiotes have to rely on their hosts and have no identity on their own, they don’t need to name each other as they barely communicate without a host 3) Symbiote is a shit name
It’s an odd naming convention. The same is true for Carnage in an even larger sense. Carnage only considers himself to be a complete being if Cletus and the symbiote are together. Other wise, they’re only half an entity at all times. Eddie sometimes struggles with that, but Carnage doesn’t even consider it’s separate parts to be anything unless they’re together. But, I’d say the majority of symbiotes that have names were created on Earth. Symbiotes from Klyntar probably never needed names unless they were significant (like Grendel) because they’re a hive mind.
The issue I see is all the characters who have bonded with the symbiote also being referred to as venom. It’s not a name locked to Eddie which is why trying to lock it to Eddie just doesn’t take
From my understanding as explained in the King in Black, venom war, and ghost-spider its name is Venom and becomes "we" when the host has less control. Thusly, its the symbiote when its with peter and gwen. Venom took the name venom because all he ever did was cause, venom. Because they are a hive, they didnt have personalities. If i recall, venom was on of the first to have sovernity away from Knull.
thank you for the video on this. maybe it sound like a stuck up purely-comic-venom fan to criticize the way the symbiote is now referred to as "venom" in newer runs, but i think the newer use of "Venom" really undermines what symbiotes are and what the Other's bond with Eddie and Dylan means. the comics have since been obsessed with portraying Eddie as super out of character and with removing him from the Venom symbiote a lot in the comics. so perhaps it tracks.
Probably has something to do with symbiotes being able to remember things across space and time, venom symbiote in one universe just has a bit of the name “venom” somewhere in its memory so it stuck with it just a guess tho
I like to think of it like this: when spiderman first got it he just thought of it as a suit, thus he never fully bonded with it to form a new being he just stayed spiderman, Eddie then goes on to bond with it correctly forming venom. Now subsequent uses of the symbiote by others can be seen as them utilizing the symbiote instead of bonding with it properly, they just know hey this thing turned Eddie Brock into venom so if I wear it I'll be venom. That's just my thoughts tho
This doesn't really make sense. Old Venom storylines feature the name even when the simbiosis was with another character. Hence Agent Venom, Scorpio's version and others who appeared way before the movies
So if I'm right when Venom isn't bonded to Eddie its just the symbiote but when its bonded to Eddie there just Venom. I forget how confusing it all is.
What if the symbiote stayed nameless like in cannon and it’s like before it bonded with Eddie it didn’t have a name for itself on its home world or with spiderman until that moment when it came together with Eddie.
What i think it is that its venom and eddie at the same time as when its just the human its eddie, just the symbiote its venom, if its eddie and venom with the symbiote showing its venom as venom is the one you see just like when venom is inside eddie he us callled eddie brock even tho he is still eddie and venom their both there its just eddie is the one you see so basically Human = eddie Symbiote = venom Human + symbiote (symbiote out) = venom Human + symbiote (symbiote in) = eddie
I am little confused bruh.but yeah I am seeng your point Eddie calls the symbiote his other and his other is venom and when Eddie is Eddie he still says sometimes we are Eddie Brock stuff so there is an potential for Introduce another type of symbiosis where it might reavel when Eddie is bounded with venom Eddie says we because some of his strength comes from venom and venom says we because his host has a little control too and also carnage takes full control of his host so he uses i like do you seeng the potential and I love that idea rather than calling Venom the symbiote which is so dumb and the suite which is the lamest name ever how even people think about this names that's just weird.
I feel as if this wouldn’t have been a problem if they just kept the same relationship they had in the first Venom movie. Venom essentially takes Eddie hostage in the first movie and to have him say “We are Venom” kinda makes it where Venom’s like “I’ve found my host and I’m not letting him leave, so he’s my property.”
But saying Venom is between Eddie and the symbiote also feels a little off the mark too, doesn't it. The symbiote has bonded with other people and has gone by the mame Venom, so it doesn't feel like that has been something just between the symbiote and Brock. Hell, let's not forget that one of the most popular Venoms waa Flash Thompson.
just call the symbiote symbiote or black suit since almost everyone in the comics already say “black suit” or “the suit” even in the ps5 game they call it “the suit”
I don’t really care when people call the symbiote venom, what I’m more upset about is when writers make the symbiote a mind-controlling parasite. The host should have just as much if not more control over the body as the symbiote, which is also why I don’t like it when Eddie isn’t the host because he really hates Peter Parker so it’s easier to give him control.
This is sorta a headcannon, but I like Venom calling himself Venom when split from Eddie, because I see it as Venom not having a name or real identity prior to the symbiosis, but after gaining a real connection to Eddie and saying the whole “we are Venom” thing, that’s all Venom can see himself as. Not that Venom is already his name or anything, but that fundamentally that symbiote that bonded with Eddie is Venom and nothing else. It just happens that Eddie has another name separate from Venom, and Venom is only called Venom, so he goes by just Venom.
I don't see how this complaint is relevant when talking about the venom movie where the name Venom doesnt make sense to begin with, no spider to hate Not that it matters. Its the multiverse so whether its wrong or not depends on if the writers decide so
How does Eddie + Venom being the only ones referred to Venom diminish Eddie’s importance? If anything it shows the bond being so strong between the two that only they should be considered Venom and let’s be real,do we really want Peter or just anyone who picks up the symbiote to be called Venom now? If anything that diminishes the bond Venom has with Eddie. Not everyone can just be Venom yknow?
Because Venom isn't the symbiote, nor a single entity. Venom is the name given to the combination of both Eddie and the symbiote. Without Eddie there's no Venom, just the symbiote, the black suit or "The Other" as how Eddie calls it often.
@@pablocardoso7830 venom is the symbiotes name though Venom's children call him that and refer to Eddie as his own person. It's like how toxin has always been toxin even though it's had 4(?) hosts currently.
i personally like believing that the symbiotes name is venom. but he says “we are venom” because separating a symbiote from the host is like separating a human consciousness from its body. two halves make a whole. So he’s (the symbiote) venom but they are also venom
pretty sure that just nitpicking. Venom didn't have a name on earth at first because it didn't speak english while attached to spiderman. after getting rejected, it learned to communicated better with its host where venom and flash became the first moment it named itself. in the new venom movie, the other symbiots called Venom "the black one" when referencing him because they didn't know his earth name was venom yet. Carnage was the same way. no matter who carnage bonded with, they were carnage+host. we see this in the ps1 game when carnage bonds with doctor octopus as the final boss. in otherwords, venom never gets their english name till they bond with flash and carry it over the Eddie when spiderman beats him out of flash.
Eddie came up with the name "Venom". The name is even associated with Eddie's downward spiral. That's the way its been since issue 300 of Amazing Spider-Man all the way back in the 80s. I don't care what some writer retconned last week. "WE are Venom."
what are people on, his name is venom. Always has been venom. Hence why when he fights spiderman by himself, he IS venom. Since Eddie is the most proeminent host, it kinda makes sense for Venom to keep his name, since Eddie + Venom is just Venom but stronger.

Just call him Venom. He's been that long enough to adopt the name. Multiple people besides eddie have had the symbiote an been calle venom like mac gargan. And flash Thompson. Eddie is also enough of his own person to not always be associated with the symbiote and venom as a whole. A bunch of people insist we call them the suit. Or symbiote which is just fucking lame and doesn't make sense. How come all the other sumbiotes gets actual names and venom doesn't just get to be venom.
I Purely Agree Even Eddie Considers The Symbiote As His Other And He Even Said His Other Is Venom Even In Comics Carnage Is The Symbiotes Scream Is The Symbiotes Name I Prefer It More Because I Am Tired Of Just Seeng Eddies Journey And People Who Called Venom The Symbiote Or The Suite The Symbiote Is So Lame The Suite Is Even More Fucking Lame If You Use Venom To Call The Symbiote And Eddie And The Symbiote Themselves Venom If There Was An Explanation Where Venom Says When He Is Without Any Host He Says I Am Venom And When He Is With An Host He Says We Are Venom Because He Does Litrelly Takes Control Of His Host And The Host Also Has Some Control While Carnage Takes The Full Control So He Calls Himself Carnage And Also Since Had Been Rejected By His Hosts Outcast And Possibly Bullied By His Own Kind And Even Eddie Doesn't Trusts Venom Entirely Neither Dylan Does And Anne Had Taken Her Own Life Because Of Bounding With Him And Flash And Mac Gargon Used Him As An Tool Or An Wepon Yeah Flash Also Does Something Like That His Raputation Has Been Ruined By Spider Man And He Has Been Seen As Villain No Matter How Many Times He Saves Them And Also Everyone Like Spider Man And Wolverine Gets Someone To Properley Understand Them But Venom Never Gets Anyone Like You Can See The Potential If You Call The Symbiote Venom And We Can Introduce New Type Of Symbiosis By That Do You Agree With Me?
Dude I’ve always been irked by this. Venom drives the point that they are 2 beings combined. The symbiote is not Venom without Eddie. I get it’s called the “Venom symbiote” but it’s called that bc that particular symbiote makes Venom with the host
Honestly this isn’t a issue for me Venom has been around for so long that his name should just stay because what other name would you give him it feels wrong taking away his iconic name hes always been Venom regardless because the identity was created when Eddie and Venom bonded it created Venom cuz it didn’t have a name even with Peter he always called it the Symbiote at first but changed to Venom
I mean it makes more sense tho I don't think venom would just want to be called a symbiote forever that kind of lessens his character making him more of a random alien instead of venom it's a bit racist just calling venom by a character trait being a symbiotic ailen it's like calling a human an homosapient
Ig i always looked at it the opposite, that the symbiote switching between we are and i am is just to illustrate that pronouns dont always work the same for a symbiote, bc theyre not really an individual but not not one also?
Bro, really put the movies in here. Sonyverse movies is dog shit and they fucked up Venom's character anyway. Eddie and the black symbiote fuse together because of their mutual hatred of Spider-Man and Peter Parker from the past believing to be poisonous against him. Ergo: Venom. And, that name just stuck for Eddie. However I'll agree for Dylan it's confusing but literally the black symbiote is Venom. And, it's his son, so I think it makes sense Dylan just chooses the name Venom because that's the name the symbiote and his Dad chose for their bonding. There is also no OTHER black symbiote, bro, all the other symbiotes are different colors and have different abilities and levels of strength. 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤨🤨🙇🏾♂️🙇🏾♂️🙇🏾♂️💯💯🖤🖤📠
@purp4168 That really doesnt matter. Venom is tacked on the name a lot regardless of control. Theres Agent Venom and Gwenom as examples. And on top of that, the naming worse so easily
This entire argument is invalid simply off the fact that venom is venom no matter who it’s on except for Spider-Man who wore him First and rejected it leading it to become its own identity and have its own hate for Spider-Man. Only when brock gains full control of venom does he then become Agent Venom! You don’t really know this character just say that🤷♂️
Eddie was venom in the begging comic wise, the symbiote didn't talk or have character , after a while they changed that, probably just a vestige of being a pioneer
I think Eddie is Eddie I think venomous venom and when they become one venom is more prominent doesn't Eddie have cancer and the only reason he's still alive it's because of venom so yes they are venom
I feel like this all could of be avoided if they called the Venom symbiote, "the other", since that's what Eddie called it a few times in his first appearances
Well he still calls it that up in the modern day too
The other is the spider god that spiderman makes a deal with inside his head to revive during the morlun arc
Are we supposed to pretend that that is a name?
@rhyderleming5851 it's an alien symbiote from a planet that serves as a God-cage of course it's a name
@rhyderleming5851 Yes
This entire dilemma is solved if you just say "the Venom symbiote"
Since I'm also a movie fan I've grown accustomed to calling the symbiote Venom depending on the situation but I feel like the comics need to genuinely set a system for it instead of how vague it's been depending on who's writing
It might sound dumb lol, but maybe even "Venom's symbiote," like "Alzheimer's disease"
The problem with that is that's it's not really a name. It's like expecting people to regularly call someone "The Smith Human" to refer to a man with Smith as his last name or as his profession. "Symbiote ≠ Venom" doesn't exactly work when you consider the idea of Agent Venom.
I love Agent Venom. Only seen him in like one appearance but he seems awesome. The one where they’re in space and Taskmaster is the baddie
Other hosts adopting the name “Venom” was a result of that very misconception. Writers are just as ignorant of Venom as the casual fans are.

It may be confusing but its still what Venom calls itself no matter who uses it
What about Peter?
@betterlatethannever4529 that was before it took on the identity of Venom and at that time it didn't really talk at all until it became a full on villain
It’s called “bad writing.”
@bigevil1001 that's not what bad writing is
in what comic? this never happened
They sort of fix it, with the other symbiote referring to him as "the black one" rather than venom
This is kinda like how when Kent Nelson puts on Dr Fate’s helmet he becomes Dr Fate but the helmet’s actual name is Nabu
Venom: “WE are Venom!”
Fans: “So the symbiote is Venom?”
Symbiote: 🤦
Brock: “I literally came up with the F%CKING NAME!!!”
as a Venom fan, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. it’s a fictional character, I doubt he would get offended over this
Still, it’s kinda strange that all this time people have been parroting Venom’s line “WE are Venom” and somehow never put 2 and 2 together.
1) because Venom is (and always has been) associated with the alias, therefore the symbiote
2) symbiotes have to rely on their hosts and have no identity on their own, they don’t need to name each other as they barely communicate without a host

Eddie and Venom form the lethal protector
I thought it was just venom YEARS before the movies
it wasn't. this only started after the movies and some writers and editors messed up
then why are flash and the symbiote called agent venom when they’re together ?

The lethal crusader..?
I think it’s misunderstood you see the symbiotic is pronounced vainum and then they are venom
We gotta give it a new name then
The symbiote's name is Venom
Dude I’ve always been irked by this. Venom drives the point that they are 2 beings combined. The symbiote is not Venom without Eddie. I get it’s called the “Venom symbiote” but it’s called that bc that particular symbiote makes Venom with the host
I have a funny idea, venom is the symbiotes name, but it’s spelt differently
Honestly this isn’t a issue for me Venom has been around for so long that his name should just stay because what other name would you give him it feels wrong taking away his iconic name hes always been Venom regardless because the identity was created when Eddie and Venom bonded it created Venom cuz it didn’t have a name even with Peter he always called it the Symbiote at first but changed to Venom
fun fact, the movie just retconned it that’s all
i just call it the venom symb and that's usually not as confusing
Personally if you had to give him a name I fell like ferro as in ferrofluid would be sick
I mean it makes more sense tho I don't think venom would just want to be called a symbiote forever that kind of lessens his character making him more of a random alien instead of venom it's a bit racist just calling venom by a character trait being a symbiotic ailen it's like calling a human an homosapient
Nah he's Venom!
What’s wrong with Venom being the name for both?
Venom
Yeah. The f’d it up
Who would win Venom of Firefly
How about Ve'nam?
OR i keep calling it venom and carry on as i have been
Isn't Eddie+Venom Lethal Protector?
I mean they only called themselves that after they made the name venom so yes and no
I dont get why black suit spiderman is never called SpiderVenom
Because Venom isn't in control of symbiote Spiderman
@purp4168 That really doesnt matter. Venom is tacked on the name a lot regardless of control. Theres Agent Venom and Gwenom as examples. And on top of that, the naming worse so easily
This entire argument is invalid simply off the fact that venom is venom no matter who it’s on except for Spider-Man who wore him First and rejected it leading it to become its own identity and have its own hate for Spider-Man. Only when brock gains full control of venom does he then become Agent Venom! You don’t really know this character just say that🤷♂️
so you ganna forget Flash and Venom? okay buddy. The symbiote's name is Venom. Idk what you're fuckin on about.
No nah jk
Aren't they called like " klintar " or something don't know the spelling
Correct spelling is " klyntar "
That's the race. Or their whole species in general
who cares
i hate comic book fans
