  • If you live in the U.S., you probably know someone who's on food stamps, aka SNAP. In fact, 46.5 million people use SNAP to get by. And not all of them are who you'd expect.

      She's talking about vanilla extract. It's normal that roomates share basic kitchen stuff, that doesn't mean she feeds all of them. Maybe she just used it up and now it's her turn to repurchase it.

    I find the comments really interesting. Most people seem really supportive of this white young woman who is able to work in a higher paying job (which she admits) and gets food stamps to buy healthier food than she would otherwise be able to afford. I am fine with this btw. However, I have seen similar programs with very poor, unskilled, black women and it's nothing but poverty shaming. Interesting indeed.

    • @derekah.3359
      @derekah.3359 8 лет назад +18

      +Sassafraster I thought i was the only person that saw that... It's okay for this white young woman to need government assistance but not okay for black women. She has a job and there are black women that get food stamps that have jobs too.... But they are wrong and in this young lady's case this is okay. When you go to other vids about blacks being on food stamps, you see the comments and they are horrendous, but not in the case of this girl's story.

    • @derekah.3359
      @derekah.3359 8 лет назад +13

      +Living Well With TJ How about instead of race baiting people stop being hateful to one another period? Stop singling out a certain group of people and making fun of others but exempting others from scrutiny? I just came from a vid, where there were whites and black making fun of black women on food stamps and saying evil comments. Sassafraster did not say anything derrogatory, she didnt make fun of this female in the vid and she also did not curse about her or call her names. But with these comments on this video, this white young lady is not recieving much back-lash... I dont think anyone should mock anyone's situation. No offence, if you cant seem to see the differences or the variations in the comments and the obvious ignorant way of thinking a lot of people clearly identify they have, then i feel sorry for you, this world is so not sugar coated.

      You don't want her to buy goat cheese then have your legislator make it a requirement that you can't buy it. SNAP already does not allow you to use money on alcohol, cigarettes, and paper products which makes sense. However you are giving someone x amount of dollars per week to buy food as they see fit and not to have you legislate what they can or can't eat outside of a few vice requirements.

    When will people realize that AmeriCorps is NOT "work" in the traditional sense?? It is PUBLIC SERVICE, aka VOLUNTEERING, which means you get a "stipend." There is NO salary, NO wage in the traditional sense. You ARE meant to live in poverty, because the mission of AmeriCorps is to eliminate poverty, and one method of preparing those who serve to help achieve that goal is to have that poverty like experience. You want a higher pay? Work retail, fast food, whatever pays minimum wage. You'll be making a lot more than serving with AmeriCorps. Not bashing on Americorps, I'm bashing on this video's lame attempt to garner my sympathy. People CHOOSE to dedicate a year of their life to AmeriCorps.

      +Chris M Thank you for stating this! I can't believe they are trying to present this as something it's not. I am an AmeriCorps alumni. When I served (about 15 years ago), we received $700 a month, and there was a stipulation that we could NOT receive food stamps (I guess they have since changed that rule). We also received free health insurance--I didn't pay a dime for anything health-related, which is a luxury the people I served didn't have. Anyhoo, yes. This program is designed to place volunteers into the poverty level of the people they serve. How could AJ not research this well enough to know WTF it actually is? Journalism = infotainment these days.

      She is sticking with a job that requires the taxpayers to supplement her income because she wants to "help" people. Here's an idea, you could help the people of California by getting a better job and not having to take their food stamp taxes?
      This is the mindset of so many millennial today. They are blind to how they are hurting people, and they zoom in 100x on the area of their life where they perceive to be "helping" others.
      Lol. California sounds like a cesspool of non-contributors and people in love with their "intentions" while totally ignorant of their actions.

    • @nukethenarrative5873
      @nukethenarrative5873 6 лет назад +10

      You stay at home with your parents (or get friends together to share rent on a property) and save money. You get a job that pays the best you can find and you learn to do that job well. You make yourself valuable to the organization you work for. You avoid like the plague any co workers that spend their free time talking trash about people that are working harder than they are. You make contacts in your industry (this is not hard, because you are a hard working and you are learning a lot) and eventually you will find opportunities to move up. You pay down debt and do not go into debt for things that will not create an income. You stop buying $5 coffees at Starbucks (ever!).
      The truth is, it's NOT easy. It's even harder today than it was last decade, or the decade before...
      But you have to work the plan.
      The problem with life is that it can take years and years to build a life that is really working. On top of that, sometimes you can't tell if your life is working for years and years. This means that you can live for years and years before you finally admit that your life isn't working, and at that point it can still take years and years to catch up to where you want to be (if that is even possible).
      The best advice for a girl like the one in the video would be this...
      Work on yourself. Make yourself pleasant. Reject all hatred for people that are not the same political beliefs as you. Learn to cook. Learn to bake. Keep your house/room clean and tidy. Work hard. Learn to get over disappointment. Learn how to disagree without being argumentative. Do all those things and hopefully you will meet a man who has a high enough income to help make up for your financial shortcomings. That is the best piece of advice. But "feminism" has ensured that advice like that can't be given without calling the grantor and bigot or chauvinist.

I mean, I live at home with my parents right now (long story, but basically the jobs in my degree field that I can find now are few and far between, nor do they pay much more than my current job in retail in a very expensive area so I'm at home until I can get a permanent and stable job in my field with benefits) and I have the same kind of arrangement with them : I buy my own food plus anything that the household may have run out of like toilet paper or laundry detergent as a courtesy because I use it just as much as they do (of course, my parents and I alternate based on who is going to the store when we happen to be out of something) in addition to covering the gas bill every month and paying "rent" to contribute to the utilities and shared food that I'm consuming (only fair and at $100 a week, that's a heck of a lot less than a comparable apartment in my area).

But, most of my adult life I've worked two jobs and at one time I worked four to keep our family's head above water. This is an interesting trend that in millennials. My 24 year old sons best friend, who is 25, works part time because he doesn't have the desire to work full time and applied for food stamps. I don't understand two things: 1) where motivation has gone, 2) how this is possible in this system, and, another, 3) why younger people feel it is ok to burden the already saturated system when they could work more and over their expenses. I have to admit that when her expenses were listed and she had $180 left after said expenses. After my husband and I pay our bills every month, and I mean basic expenses with no grand lifestyle, great cars, or yearly vacations, we don't even have $180 left. And no, I'm not complaining or whining, just perplexed. What a broken system!

    She bought $6 worth of goat cheese at Trader Joe's because she had it on stamps. I think there should be more regulation. I can see using food stamps to pay for absolute necessities and basics. Goat cheese is neither. If someone can afford beans and rice, they should eat that instead of being on food stamps so you can afford fancy food.

    I buy organic chicken and wild caught fresh fish. I also live in an area where fish is plentiful and usually pretty cheap. Like, at one point it was cheaper to purchase lobsters than it was to purchase ground beef, which worked out well for me since I can't eat any red meat. A pack of organic chicken can easily last me two weeks of meals.
    75% of my meals are vegetarian because, again, illness. I also shop at the farmers market a lot because they match your snap. You purchase $20 in tokens and get $40 total. With that I can afford to do my weekly shop AND help put money into the pockets of local farmers.

    I'm so sick of people being on food stamps because they can, not because they need it. This girl would be fine without food stamps. She may have to hit Dad up for another $50 once in a while, but she wouldn't miss any meals. Food aid is for people who have no other options. She is choosing to work at a job that pays crappy because she finds it more fulfilling than other work. I shouldn't have to pay for her indulgent life choices, and I surely don't want to pay for her goat cheese. A white girl with a degree from Duke, probably from an upper middle-class family, has no business using food aid programs.

    • @purewonka

      My point is that this particular young woman has choices. She chooses a path that doesn't earn her anywhere near her income potential (remember that degree from Duke), and then collects a benefit from the government because of the the low income job she chooses to work at. That's not why benefit programs exist. It's evidence of self-indulgence and entitlement - two of the personalty characteristics that are infecting the USA.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, says that in fiscal 2010 nearly 51 million Americans were poor enough to qualify but only 38 million received benefits.
      If you are eligible for assistance, get it, or else it's just going to waste.

      It's fine to choose to live happy and poor, but don't do it on my dime. Food stamps are for the needy. They are for people who have to take any crappy minimum wage job just to survive. Food stamps are not for people who have a college degree from Duke who could easily get a decent job, but choose not to do so. If she wants to work for Americorps, but can't survive on her own, then she can ask her parents if she can move back home. If her own parents refuse to provide her with financial support, then why should the taxpayers? I support helping the needy, but not those who have options and simply choose to live in poverty.

    My family is on foodstamps,but we don't have the luxury of buying non GMO,or buying from Trader Joes. We try our best though to buy healthy food for a family of 4 kids that's including me,but within our budget. A lot of politicians don't realize how hard it is being poor these programs although they're not much they are a BIG help. There'd be days we'd go hungry if we didn't food stamps to help us.Although I see some people abuse food stamps it's really rare,and it's a stupid excuse to cut foodstamps.

      just want to point out, GMO's are actually good. Even bill nye, who was completely against GMOs, has come out in support of them. What you _don't_ want are foods that require vast amounts of chemicals to grow, and that's what GMO's are replacing. The only time you should get concerned over a GMO is when they try making it so that something not found in nature is spliced into the GMO.

      Well we shouldn't have food stamps to begin with. Your parents shouldn't have had you if they can't afford to provide for yall. Sounds horrible but it's the truth

    Americorps will allow her to work for about 5-10 years and then forgive her loans. I'm surprised she didn't mention this. It often makes financial sense to do these jobs for a few years for peanuts and get forgiven of 200k loans.

Still, I think they could have gotten more affordable housing but wanted to be in a safer (i.e. affluent) neighborhood. To be fair, I don't know if tofu hipsters could survive living in the hood.

    She makes $1600 a month. That is more than enough to live off of for a single person. She lives with room mates. I have a family of 4 and I was denied snap and the reason given was I made $100 a month too much. I made $30K a year at that time. This crap upsets me. She does not need it to survive. She is definitely not struggling. I went hungry many night so that my wife and children could have what they needed.

    When I graduated from college, I considered joining AmeriCorps, working for United Way of Oakland. In the brochures for the program, they mention that you will need to apply and get food stamps during the program time. I pulled out immediately, because it seemed so wrong to me that I would possibly be taking assistance from a person or family that really needed it. I found a volunteer program that did similar work close to my hometown. This is a big issue I have with AmeriCorps/VISTA. The mission and work they do is wonderful, but putting them in a position where they have to go on assistance is bonkers to me.

    At least she is striving for success and this is only temporary for her. I'm also glad to see that she buys healthy food and not all the junk like most people do that are on food stamps. A little help to get by is a blessing but not to take advantage of it.
