This is supposed to be a metaphor for purgatory. To an endless hell of chasing a herd you will never catch. A cowboy's version of hell.
You're half right. It does show basically a cowboy's Hell, but Purgatory is meant to be an intermediate place where people basically work through their sins until they are either good enough for Heaven or evil enough for Hell. So while Purgatory may at times be a bit brutal it is usually temporary, whereas Hell is permanent.
the cowboy's Flying Dutchman
I don't think Johnny Cash believed in Purgatory
@@uriah777 he didn’t believe in reincarnation either but that’s what “highwayman” was about 🤷🏻♂️
Reminds me of Flying Dutchman and The Wild Hunt - forced to do what you used to love until the end of time, cursing your fate every second.
On this day 40 years ago Johnny Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame by Kenny Rogers. ❤️
Nice
Cocaine Blues, Man in Black, Folsum Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue, Ring of Fire some more classic bangers by The Man in Black and OG Outlaw Johnny Cash.
And the man comes around.
BOY...NAMED...SUE!!! You won’t be disappointed! Also BIG RIVER, WALK THE LINE, RING OF FIRE, FOLSOM PRISON BLUES, JACKSON ft. June Carter Cash. I could literally do this all day, I’m a huge Johnny fan.
That beat is Johnny Cash’s signature sound. Johnny Cash was a man before his time. He broke barriers of his time. Raised in poverty, he wrote for the common man. Spoke for the voiceless. Welcomed people of all cultures and races. He had a beautiful soul.
Must do live Folsom Prison. He walked in Gave them guys a grand show while "Roasting" the Guards & Prison Head. Nasty food n dirty water. Bringing light to State Prison n Poor Guys Locked Away there. Also "I walk the line" tale of his life.
Johnny cash a man with skill and an amazing voice.
I was about to go to bed when I saw this, wasn't expecting it so early in the morning. Not that I'm complaining, just keep me up a bit longer. The song is exactly what it says, it's a ghost story and a warning, like A Christmas Carol.
Thank you for paying respect to the legend Johnny Cash. God bless.
The song is about a cowboy who was on the wrong path. He has a vision of what will happen to him if he does not change his ways. In other words he saw a vision of a cowboy’s version of hell.
It's a ghost story. It's really that simple. It's a variation on an old idea of the Hunt of the Damned. These are the damned cowboys doomed to chase a stampede of hell-cattle forever. The old cowboy who see 'em...Well. Let's hope he fixed his life, yeah? :)
Mr. Cash had the right sound for this.
This song is so good. I appreciate that you’re feeling the same vibes I am whilst listening.
This is an old song. It was first recorded by Stan Jones and his Death Valley in 1948, It was recorded by Burl Ives in 1949. Since then it has been covered by many artist,
G'day mate,
It's cool to hear you react to some of these country legends,
There are a lot of real good classic artists that I think you would love to react to , like Marty Robbins here is a great voice, like : white sports coat, just married, story of my life,
Devil woman,big iron,hanging tree, + heaps more,
Also Charlie Pride you will love this mans voice,
Like :kiss an angel good morning,Burgers & fries, + many more, also Johnny Horton, battle of new Orleans,
North to Alaska, sink the Bismarck,
Keep up the great reactions mate.!
Oh man, I haven't listened to Johnny Horton in forever. Those are all great songs!
Hank Marvin plays this like no other. Also, plays "Apache"
Thank you for hitting Johnny Cash tunes! I'm a huge fan of Johnny! Your reactions to this legendary singer have been great!
You had me laughing out loud a couple of times, subscribed! Great song- haunting- literally.
I hope The Man in Black comes up this week. He really lets us know what he was all about and it's great!... also, "Live at Folsom Prison".
What a novel and original interpretation. Thank you so much.
Music is art and open to interpretation
This hell for a Cowboys. Chasing the Devil's herd.
This a cover, but Johnny Cash has the perfect voice for this song. He sounds far better then the original singer.
Very astute. This song was indeed the inspiration for The Doors Riders On The Storm.
The ghost rider is telling the dude he needs to change his evil ways. He saw the riders on the sky as a warning about the evil life he is already living.
When the man comes around, cocaine blues
That guitar at 3:27 gives me chills every time
Ghost Riders in the sky was vista hit by Vaughan Monroe in 1954. It was covered after that many times for its super cowboy ethos.
Hearing the song and thinking of the lyrics gives me goosebumps
Your interpretation was pretty spot on. Johnny Cash was definitely giving us the message you got.
it's kind of like the legend of The hunt of Damned, they have to ride and chase forever, no rest, no sleep, no water or food, it never stops. Yeah do that for 10,000 years, wow
Gotta do a boy named Sue.
After Johnny Cash, you should do Keith Whitley. When you say nothing at all, and 10 feet away are both good ones
RESPECT for the FF7 wall scroll. Haha. Great video too.
You know, country and rock both have their roots in blues. Johnny and Ozzy are both, the MEN IN BLACK
There is only One Johnny Cash, he is the very best there ever was and ever will be! The man in Black ! You may be gone you will always be in our hearts for ever! I love you Johnny! ❤️🤗❤️🤗
I hung my head is still for me the simplest poignant song i have wver heard. no explanation needed. in just a few words a whole range of emotions and imagery evoked. Johnny did such a service to music and the people. He did not write pretty, he wrote deep.
I have the original 78 LP recording, written and by Stan Jones around and recorded by his band Stan Jones And The death Valley Rangers around 1947- 48 This song has been covered by hundreds of famous solo singers and groups. Havent heard a bad one yet.
The man comes around us a really good Johnny cash song to react to
My Husband played with a man named Jesse Smith, He wrote the original Almond Joy/Mounds Jingle, and earned a Gold Record, but they did this song, my Husband played Bass, this is actually a hard song to play!
I blaze this when I im speeding to work
You really should check out Boy named sue .I think you would enjoy it alot. Its a fun funny story/song.
The Wild Hunt. Its been in a lot of video games and tv shows recently. Its an ancient omen of death and damnation from Norse beliefs. They work for Odin.
Great breakdown of the message. I've heard this song multiple times, but never paid attention to it's message until now.
Sunday morning coming down is a good one
Gene Autry - Ghost Riders in the Sky (from Riders in the Sky 1949) An old cowboy movie
Must do live folson prison at the prison and ring of fire
The ghost riders were cursed. Endless tracking of the herd they'll never rope and corral. Doomed forever more to ride forever in the hell lit in the sky. Warning to the young fellow...don't follow us.
It sounds like the cowboy saw the The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse Riding in the sky.
Could be wrong though🤔...
Dope Reaction, keep'em coming!🔥🔥🔥
Nah, the warning was that he had better mend his ways, this was a warning that if he did not change, this is what hell would be like for him. The herd was the devils herd. And hell for cowboys was forever to be tired, in pain, riding hard, and never able to get off a horse chasing the devil’s due.
The Highway Men do a great job at this song also!!
A Christmas Carol’s 3 ghosts condensed into one frightful scene of demonic cattle running wild and the riders who are dammed forever to chase after them in a fruitless attempt to catch them, all for the actions they took in life. That lonesome cowboy better chang how he is living, or come his judgment, he will join the Marleys with their heavy chains in the sky, only chains exchanged for a Syphilis like task of a never ending chore. Ride on ghost riders, god speed!
A boy named Sue... Is a fun one
Lol when you finally figure it out. You are so right though
I always felt this was kind of a scrooge - marley moment. We were like you once now we're being punished, so change your ways or you'll be punished too.
Dude, that was my song back in the day. Thanx for the replay. Yippee yay way.
This is the first song I learned to play on guitar great song possibly the best version ever!
If you want to hear a good song about Johnny Cash and about his conversion from the bad ways he was going down, look up Gary Allan "Nickajack Cave". It's based off a true story that Johnny Cash told, and is immortalized by a plaque near the opening of the actual place called Nickajack Cave. The song and the story is very similar in theme to this song.
Ghost riders in the sky was originally sung and recorded by Burl Ives back in the 1940’s.
this song gives me chills
Ay Big Holla! Love your videos and your synopsis on this was spot on. Great work, thanks.
That is the Carter Sisters singing background!
The Carters were his background singers. June (his wife) was one of them. They had a brilliant sound.
Cocaine Blues is very good along with Folsom prison
Ghost riders were kinda like the biblical 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. Seeing the ghost riders were a premonition of death.
This is basically "A Christmas Story" as a western.
I recommend you to listen to this other 2 johnny cash's songs : when the man comes around and ain't no grave.
Please react to The Man in Black. It explains Johnny's philosophy on life so well. It's a must to listen to. Especially if you want a deep song. Peace, man! Loving your reactions!
Absolutely brief breakdown thanku fantastic holla love this much love an God bless x
Interesting insight you have! good.
The first music album I ever bought was Johnny Cash
Listen to Toby Keith
How do you like me now
Running block
Call a marine
Pretty much any song by him is 🔥
Not written by Cash. Old cowboy tale. Got turned to a song mixed with a little fire and brimstone imagery back in the ‘40s. Covered by a lot of artists and many are great. You have the right idea, don’t go running with the cattle thieves. You get caught up and you’ll be marked and stuck in the life doing devils work. Change your ways now.
I really like your interpretation, Holla! I'll go with that from now on 🙂
I'm not the biggest Johnny fan, but I like "Man in Black" and "A Boy named Sue". And this one.
Watch the movie GHOST RIDER with Nicholas Cage. They used this song in it. Very cool movie
Another great "ghost" song is Merle Haggard's The Silver Ghost!
if you knew how hard it was to cowboy, you would know why he didn't want to chase the devils herd
The Wild Hunt. Herne.
Fuck knows what was going through Johnny's head when he wrote this piece??? All i know is this old school track sounds sweet as hell.
Long live the man in black...........
PS. Epic Cash video HollaAtKrazy.
He didn’t write it.
@@cindysturz1071 God damn, it sounds like i have been fooled by another cover once again. My deepest apologies to anybody that i may have missed leaded in my original comment...
Many thanks for letting me know - Cindy...
I disagree a bit with your take on the message being not following the crowd or that he was trying to follow these ghost riders. I think what's being described is a cowboy just riding along one day doing his normal activities, when he's given this vision of a cowboy's version of eternal punishment: Never being able to stop trying to catch a herd that cannot be caught, sweat-soaked bone-weariness forever, as a warning to change how he's been living his life.
Hitting day 3 early.
And just think this isn't the original of this song, that was Stan Jones in 1948. Unfortunately recordings that old tend not to be of the same quality as the newer versions.
Must be "San Quiantian" February 1969. Folsom prison Blues. Official footage video.
You need to do friends in low places by Garth brooks
Great reaction. You’re right I think
The wild hunt rides again
Really sure the first person that I heard s was done by Roy Acuff and then riders in the sky?
maybe.. I think originally it was a Grand Ole Opry song. Back to either Roy Acuff Roy Clark.
Another song/story from Johnny Cash is Big bad John
I AM A SUBSCRIBER! I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS! I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO PLAY "THE HIGHWAYMEN!!! THEY CONSIST OF JOHNNY CASH, CHRISS CHRISTOPHERSON, WAYLON JENNINGS, AND WILLIE NELSON! YOU HAVE JUST GOT TO DO THIS FOR ME AND FOR YOURSELF!!! YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT THEIR SOUND IS PERFECT. PLAY IT, IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY. THE HIGHWAYMEN SHOULD HAVE THEIR OWN MOUNTAIN ON WHICH THEIR FACES ARE CARVED. IT COULD BE CALLED MOUNT HIGHWAYMEN. HA...🤗
Der Valkeryies Norse Mythology.. Richard Wagner famous music at least that is what it looks like.. sorry if im mistaken
1:34 start
Love his music
I love this song!
Great reaction
The Devil's herd.
I think of Scrooge and his talk with Marley everytime I hear this. Change your ways or you will be wearing even longer chains, brah.
bro. if you dont end with Hurt, I'm off this channel. "Hurt" is a GOAT video
Now listen to ghost chickens in the sky. Actual song by Leroy Troy.
Try the version of Burl Ives. Its not as fancy, but man...
Yo what this song is talking about comes straight from the Bible man the Ghost Riders are described as the demons possessing the people to lead them on a path to death which is why you must break away from that crowd and follow God's path, the path to eternal life in a heavenly sweet home with your Lord Father man yeah I love this song can't stop listen to it!! :):) God bless Johnny Cash may he rest in peace with the Lord himself :):)
Wrong, but close enough. He was on the job. He saw ghosts. The ghosts gave him a warning before moving on. Same message...different delivery.
