Im just testing stable builds releases. I was unable to load the mission on the 2006 3.6.9 build, thats why i excluded it.

In order to get FS2 Open running you need the retail game and the mods.
1) Retail game you can get it from steam or gog.
2) The mods you need to get the knossos launcher to get the fso builds and the visual updates fsnebula.org/k...
3) In knossos, install the "Freespace Upgrade MediaVPs" and launch the game from that mod.
For multiplayer there are a few more steps, you can find that info on the Hard-Light Productions discord channel, thats the main discord channel for the FSO community.
From 20 years ago to this day, the beam sounds from all 3 races are still the smoothest yet powerful sounds my ears have ever heard.

This was AMAZING! I remember I was about 9 years old when I watched my dad playing this and Freespace 1 and Wing Commander back in the day on his pc. Ended up playing it myself and it was the best games I played. He passed away in 2014 and I would have loved to shown him this video. Im happy to finally know that theres a mod to play this game now. Love the graphics now. This is giving me Battle of Endor vibes.
This is absolutely incredible to see how far this game has come from its humble beginnings to the titan it is now. This just goes to show the heart and passion that you dont even see in AAA developers most of the time and im proud to see this game looking at its best right now and who knows Volition may have wanted it to look like this all those years ago
Not so humble beginnings! Freespace 2 was the Best space fighter game in its day! It was my Favourite game when it first came out.
@@Elurin I may not agree with Watchmojo on most things they do in videos but at least they gave the #1 Space Combat flight Sim to Freespace 2. Guess they can be right once in a while lol. Now that Volition is gone I wonder what could be next for this IP
I realise I always come back for freespace. What a masterpiece it was and is still. Big big kudos to all the modders!

Nah, they brought it 100% on themselves in the last few years. The old guard (the talented people behind Freespace 1&2) were long gone at that point, so good riddance.

Wow, this is amazing. I put a lot of time into FS1 and FS2 when I was a kid...I last tried FSO probably back in the 2010s. The modding community has dragged this game into the modern age, I had no idea FSO was looking this good now!!!

Same, I just made a ship inspired by a combination of the Shivan SF Manticore, SF Aeshma, SB Seraphim and the Glaive from Star Citizen

It's amazing that a game from the 1990s can still bring a modern system to its knees.
I love freespace and wing commander. I hope some day they will be new game like that. Because all of last titles are more about exploration, building and mining. But not about fighting as a spacefighter pilot in huge battles in history driven world .

Where would one go to get one of these overlays for FS2? How are they installed?
Overlays? I think it's pretty easy to download the source code project and the media vps (file packs containing all the goodies) . As mentioned in description, they made it nice and easy.
For those still looking, you buy the base game off of GOG, then download and install the Knossos launcher. From there, you can find all the visual mods and campaigns in click-and-play format. I’d start with jaded’s mod packs for fs2 and FSPort. Chronologically the campaigns go FSPort, Silent threat reborn, fs2
And now to reinstall FS2. This is...inspiring. long live the net.
Also is there a mod that adds the FS 1 flak back, or is that in 2? Spaceships vs flak was always so damn cool.

Point me in the right direction to reinstall everything. Thanks for the notes. I figured it out. it seems to only work in 1920x1080 resolution. I was thinking it would work in 4k. it turns in a small part of the screen at that resolution. Struggling to play it on my new pc. This is my favorite game of all time so decided to play it again. this kronos interface is confusing compared to the old one.
Is there a Warhammer 40K mod for this? If not, there should be.

Wau wau wau. Last time I played was around 2020. Looks like I will need to fire it again. Those new textures looks great. Still my favourite space combat game. I still remmember when I was reading about some new FS 1 game in one PC Games magazine. And later there was review for FS2. Oh man the memories with this game are never forgotten. DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOU BURNERS PILOT :)

How do you play free space 2 on steam mine just stopped working
The path of the game directory is probably to long, a well known problem with steam. Move the game files to a higher directory like "x:\game\freespace2" instead of "x:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Freespace2"
