Hi! That winter started out as an El Nino, with a lot of cold, wet precip, and then in the middle of January, it warmed up considerably. So we went from a lot of plowing, to keeping the ditches and culvert open.

Great compilation of your clips. One of my first paying jobs when I was much younger was riding in the back of a salt truck all night moving salt over the tubes to drop salt down on the duels which spread it pretty good ,, driver used to honk when we cam to an intersection and we would throw a few sweeping shovelfuls out the back., didn't have spreaders like they do now. Some of those nights were the coldest I have ever been.
Thank you! I heard that they used to get guys in the back shoveling sand and salt. Man that would be a miserable job...Brrrr...
I bet the locals in nova scotia love snow removal crews
here in bc an the city where I live, they are either out too late, dont do a good enough job, or "sitting on their asses at timmies not working", even though they are probably on their coffee break
Why so much salt?
We use salt to melt the ice and snow and make the roads safe. The only drawback is it rusts out our vehicles a lot sooner!
Ah, yes. It's a shame, really. Causes premature wear on asphalt, and causes considerable and expensive rust damage on cars. I've never experienced problems on snowy roads so I guess I don't really see the need for it. It's better if people drive slower than having my car rust on salty roads :)
I've not had the opportunity to drive a truck mounted snow plow unit, but I have spent some time shinning the seat of a grader mounted plow, and the worst part of the job was the public. I'll leave it at that.
That Western Star sounds damn good! We had one down in Antigonish just to get fixed, but it was Sherbrooke's. Heard it go up street a couple times and it sounded wicked! Wish they still put Cat's in new ones and didn't have a bunch of emissions bull shit. Great video as always, hope to see more!
I thought the plow trucks in Canada used blue warning lights?
Not here, but I kinda wish they would so we would stand out more! I think they might use blue lights in Newfoundland?
It must suck to have shift gears all night and how come no power angle front plow
+Tyson Walsh Actually Tyson like standard over the automatic I drove two winters ago. I think it's because you can push the clutch and rev the engine to lift your plow and wing without having to shift into neutral. I love an automatic truck, but not for this work. Most of our trucks are just plowing two lane highways and don't need to angle. The two trucks we use on the Trans Canada Highway have angle plows tho.

I drove a 2014 Pete tractor for 7yrs and a newer paystar tri-axle for 4yrs in upstate NY stressful enough with out a plow! I give you props brother

better use the SNOW BRUSH PLOW TRUCKS behind each other snow plow truck on the road just sweeps off snow ice films and feeder salt where spot the ice on road SAVING the lots salts and snow plow truck plow BLADES don't need do over around there will spoiler the black top break hole spots. Once snow brush plow and salting JOBS! snow plow truck use for thick inches snow off the road....that all

Great video, nobody can understand what it’s like to operate one of these monsters on icy roads until you’ve done it, I’ve got 25 years behind the wheel of one of these machines, it’s sad the public treats us like dirt, keep it between the ditches.
Why are almost all highway snow plows are Western Star trucks ?

Yes we do load ourselves. I guess we don't have enough trucks at our base to justify having a loader operator.

Love the entry music, and glad we never had to buck those kind of drifts , there was only one area i had to take the grader to a couple times to punch through! Our trucks were 1968 Ford 478cu” gas short bed & an old International with a V they changed that out in 1972 for a International with a 479 gas we got 2-3 mpg , only plowed the county roads ! My longest day of plowing was 37.5 hrs

Jim, very entertaining video. I see it said Nova Scotia, what part? Some of it looked like the Annapolis Valley and some didn't. I'm from the Valley born and bred. Hope to see more.

Great video. Of all the jobs i had in my life i enjoyed snow removal the most. I was a truck driver heavy equipment operator for 30 years. Really enjoy you,r videos,wish we got that much snow here.

Nice vid but why are they using manual shift trucks ? The allison automatics now days get better fuel miles per gal. and when a manual clutch fails your down no quick fix here + your right hand is free to work other other controls plow wing spreader and you don't lose momentum when plowing large snow packs.

Quite a few years back we had a snow storm that shut down Anchorage Alaska. 38 inches on Saint Paddy‘s day! I was busier than a rat at a dump. The entire city was just about shut down. It will go down in history books as the snow of all snows. Continued work and safety for all of the road crews that are south of us! Happy holidays to all.
Just wondering, does your company just leave that front loader running for each truck, and is the cold the reason and how it makes things harder to start?
Jim, your plowing videos are probably the best recruiting tool I know of, when people ask me, "Hey Andy, what's it like driving a snow plow?"
I see you're operating one of the Granites in this video. I'm jealous. Here in Washington State, our time with Freightliners may be coming to an end, as we are plagued with electrical issues, mostly connected to the 18 speed automatic transmissions.
We have had problems with wiring on some of our Internationals. We just started getting trucks with automatic transmission a few years ago and never had any issues yet that I know off. Yet!
@@JimHowDigsDirt, I suppose anytime we're slinging salt around in a wet environment like we do, we are probably lucky we're not having anymore electrical problems than we already do lol

great videos and thanks,,,,,but its beyond me why people would choose to live there,,,fighting the weather day after day, year after year,,,sooo much wasted energy and expense,,,,,,im glad to live where there is no snow,,,ride my motorcycle most days and within 4 hours of the beach,,,but thanks for the effort in saving people who otherwise might die with no connection to cities and services,,,
