Hey there ... Let me a bit analytical and this comes to you from a person who has traveled all over the world.
    A. You are supposed to give "way" to up hill traffic. Its a rule.
    B. If you ever see an oncoming vehicle, towards you and you are towards the wall,
Left for India, Right for Other countries, the one on the EDGE get the preference not matter the up or down.
    C. Truck drivers are basically rude and dont give a shit. You are lucky he did not scrape your car and continue. He was in the right
    D. Yes, you have many comments about kicking his butt... Bad idea....!!! If he makes a phone call to the next town from where he originates from, you will loose your car and possibly life. The question is is it worth it. We have a lot of Heros telling you what to do.. The choice will always be yours... !!
I have traveled more than 50 k all over India.. and I stay safe by obeying the rules.. Leave people alone and they do the same.. Do not try to be a hero.. trust me.. I am talking from experience..
    Cheers

Thank you Kevin for your valuable reply. I am just thinking that like other truck drivers use dipper to let me stop then why he didn't use the dipper even a single time Whereas I was using the dipper continuously to ask about the safe spot.

What a load of bollocks, when you talk about the one on the edge having more preference what if two trucks meet at this point, the driver of the tiny truck obviously couldn't judge the width of is truck.

He wants you to go right and give him space from left side on little wider road. so heavy loaded vehicle can have less risk on aide edge. Also you are the good driver but due to some idiots they are always angry with car drivers.

You should consider the following while driving on mountains & especially on roads like these.
1.The heavy vehicle, esp the one coming uphill has full right of way, whether you use dipper in advance or not. He may not have inclination to respond to your dipper coz he has heavy laden vehicle to handle, in most cases, and he may be focused on negotiating the turn or road unevenness depending upon his level of experience. An experienced truck or bus driver would normally give you some indication as he approaches uphill towards you.
    2. He may have looked impatient/agitated with you while you were reversing and it seemed as if he was coming to hit you. Sorry to say this but this is normal. Though it does look intimidating but normally many time the vehicle keeps following you as you reverse to see if a suitable passing point has come coz you may not able to judge the road width properly as you will be focused on reversing.
    3. It does look at 2:10 that there was enough space for the truck to pass. Even if there is, many a times truck driver will be tentative to do so, either by bad experience or maybe due to inexperience. The reason for which is that due to the poor road conditions there have been cases esp in monsoon where the heavy vehicle have caused the road to slide off, while passing from outside and met with an accident. The soil can be loose esp during monsoon and can easily slide at vulnerable points when a heavy vehicle passes over it.
    4. Also heavily laden trucks & jeep pickup drivers like to maintain a gap between yours and his vehicle while passing, coz due to bad road their rear carriage which is heavy is articulating/rolling from side to side and may hit your vehicle if too close, hence enough gap.
    5. There is always a chance that you may come across some nasty drivers who acts like a boss esp against "plains driver" as we say in the hills. ;)
In most cases try to be cool and avoid coming to his level coz it not worth it. :) A smile from you will most probably cool him down much before he even passes you.
To conclude most HP and J&K truck drivers are very good drivers and lets agree, one needs guts of steel to drive laden vehicle on these roads. Not all truck drivers are alike. Some may have had bad experiences with small vehicles hence their preemptive aggressive stance towards you!
I have had personal experiences of truck/bus driver waving/saluting in appreciation and thanks where I gave them right of way even before they asked for it or looked out for their safety........some even slowed down to share a good word!!
TIP: In some cases where roads are narrow and you are inward side (towards the mountain side), try going on the outer side of the road to give pass to trucks and buses and let them go from inside coz of reasons mentioned in point no. 3, but this only comes with experience. :)

He wanted you to pass from the other side (through the trucks left hand side) so that he does not have drive on the edge of the road, and he was right about it. thats why he was driving towards your car to make space on the other side, not to hit you. heavier trucks have more chance of sliding off the edge if they drive too close to it.

3 points for driving on such roads :
they have first right on road :
    0. Truck loaded with liquid ( or Liquid Petrolium Gas ) - This is the major reason, you learned it about kinetic motio n while schooling.
    1. LOADED TRUCK
    2. UPHILL TRAFFIC
Always chill, take things lightly & not on heart, what you did.
These trucks dont have proper brakes, proper torque to uplift on slippery roads & cheap tyres in comparision to a car.
THEY GOT ANGRY BECAUSE THEY FACE SUCH SITUATIONS DAILY DUE TO UNEXPERIENCED DRIVER DONT UNDERSTAND IT, Argue in general.

Dont mind but there is a simple rule which everyone follows in hilly areas , Always give way to the vehicles which are ascending as its more difficult to reverse a vehicle while ascend as brakes may not function and vehicle may roll back. Trucks are heavy vehicles with a lot of load in container , which makes it more difficult for truck drivers to control while reversing. That driver was also following the same , and i guess he was expecting from you that you know this thing.

when u r driving in the hills u need to understand that its your duty to give pass to the oncoming vehicle which is ascending the hill. A big truck might be loaded or unloaded and by seeing the road condition it might fall on you by losing balance. So, tere's nothing like an argument bt u should be the wise one to have an understanding.

May be the truck was loaded with some stuff.. And he had a fear that the strech might submerge. So out of that fear he must have not taken the pass. And the second case is that for the truck drivers its really hard to drive on cut to cut margin.
But ofcorse yes abusing was not apt at that point. Bye the way u reversed really nice. Coz its really tough to do so.

Yugaldeep I don't know if it is linked to living in Himalayas. I drove more then 25k just in Himalayas without any issue. This video is not to just prove the truck driver as wrong, But this video can help other drivers to safely drive in mountains. My only concern was that why he didn't gave me dipper to stop? And if anyhow we meet at a no cross spot then we can manage that politely. We just asked him that why you didn't gave the dipper. He was just replying that "Why will I gave dipper?" I was still in search of the exact reason of his anger and not giving up the dipper.

    • @YugaldeepSingh

Vehicle coming up hill has right of way. Using of dipper and indicators is illegal for the actions you are using them for .It is the responsibility and obligation of down hill going vechicle to stop at a place where he can pass. Someting drivers form the plains are not aware off and do not wish to follow. If in doubt look up RTO rules.

for hill driving always try to visualise the road in front of you and if you are downhill give the passage to the upcoming vehicle.Reversing is a big issue with those not from mountains because they reverse either in their mohalla or in parking but here reversing can be for km too in hills,so be cautioned.Try to go to the opposite side in reversing because you can see your side(right) and the other vehicle his side.

With the type of comments read, I am sure there are more nut-heads driving on Indian roads than sane ones.. Climbing vehicles on steep roads have their right of way, and heavy vehicle have their right to pass on the non-steep side (regardless of the side of the driven traffic in any country, in India as it is left side). Since it is not a paved/sealed surface, the roads are wet and slippery, which makes the already landslide region more dangerous in such conditions. Just keep your cool and respect those heavy haulers to have their right of way in such roads. They are abusive because, only then they can tackle the issue with goons who will think twice before hurling abuses or even hurt them seriously. It is almost deserted stretches without any help in such cases, so that explains their behaviour. If you happen to meet them again in any other place, and talk to them calmly and question them, I am sure you will get the same explanation as I have explained above, or plainly they could be some serious assholes too. Life's like that in the mountains..

If driver would have passed from beside u, truck would have fallen side ways on ua car and u along with ua car wud have been crushed below it. trucks are taller and relatively unstable. see the video again and u will observe that truck driver was nly driving on the even path of the road in order not to lose balance. U shud have been wise enough and understand that. In between when someone from ua car got down and started guiding u, there u could have taken ua car to extreme right corner and truck wud have easily passed from ua left. Physics bro.

In this part of the world, the unspoken rule of driving is that the uphill drivers have the right of way. Always stop for others if you are driving downhill. This makes sense if you are carrying a heavy load with relatively smaller engines compared to North America. This means truck and bus drivers have to leverage their momentum a lot for slow uphill climbs. Starting from a standstill on up hills in these extreme conditions is not easy.

in my point of view the truck was loaded and its risky for a truck to go nearby the cliff the land may fall instead u should have gone to the other side and let the truck pass through your side

#extremeout May be "Indian Oil" truck was loaded with "Indane Gas" gas cylinders so the driver was trying to avoid ups and downs to prevent his truck from getting unbalance.

ridiculous video, Titled and explained like a terrorist attacked you. Its tough for truck drivers to drive trucks in hilly areas and they cannot stop as they are loaded. And he never tried to hit you if he wanted to hit your car he would have. I have been to manali a million times and the only annoying thing is the tourists who dont know when to stop where to stop or how to driver here. No offense. And as far as abusing is concerned only one solution grab him by the collar get him out of the truck and teach him to show some respect Indian style.

If there is anything wrong with them its their mentality... Happened with me a lot of times... They just want to show you that you are in their territory and they can do whatever they want to... I remember we were 5 guys travelling to manali via bilaspur.. The road was one of the worse in himachal at that time... A truck driver tried to hit us coz we were trying to overtake him but he wont let us do that... So my friend somehow managed to overtake him and stopped the car just to ask what was wrong with him.. Instead that driver pulled up a steel bar and started abusing us.. So other ppl stopped there on the road and there was a huge heated arguement and a road jam... So finally someone called the cops and they came to sort it out.. So the wisest decision is not to mess with these idiotic ppl...

I believe it was because 1) the truck was loaded, 2) there was no helper to check his left side and 3) its too long a rig to be plying in those roads. Anyway, once you have backed up, it is best to eschew your pride and wave a smiling goodbye.

People tend to get aggressive to cover their inadequacies. He didn't feel confident in passing, couldn't reverse and didn't understand the etiquette of light flashing on that road. Instead of asking someone to watch him while he passed your car or waiting for you to reverse, as that would have meant admitting his inexperience and lack of confidence, he gave you abuse to try and maintain an upper hand and make the difficulty seem like your fault.

Till the time you're driving on the outer side i.e. cliff edge side... you need to be more careful. that's what the truck driver wanted to range advantage of. Please give that benefit to him. if you noticed the first truck that passed had its right rear wheels half in air. in case that slipped. .the game's over.
not sure what SUV you're driving (seemed like Scorpio or maybe better) ... be careful with these "I'm big n you're small" thinkers.
    Happy Driving!
