Regarding cars with large displacement engines - they used to be taxed heavily, so when they lowered the taxes on large displacement engines, there were a lot of sales of cars that had suddenly become much less expensive than they used to be. it was an abnormal time... if I were buying a car today to use in Tokyo, regardless of price, I'd want a small car (easier to park, easier to drive on narrow roads, etc. etc.).

Perhaps the taxes were lower or the regulations were simpler than they are today? It's clear that smaller cars are cheaper and easier to drive. But on Japanese roads you'll find surprisingly frequent sedans until the '90s.
