Yay! I am starting my first arrow row. Love this pattern. I was able to find the vintage dk by Berrocco and chose color sloe berry - kind of a heathered, muted purple. Would love to know what colors others are making. When I am making such a long chain I put stitch markers every 25 stitches so if I lose count I dont have to go back to beginning. It really helps to see how you begin and end each row, Bonnie, because that is where I get confused and mess up adding stitches or taking them away. Thank you Bonnie!
Thanks Margaret! Me too!
I'm making this shawl in the Douglas Fir Vintage DK currently working on row 11 of the woven stitch. I'm loving it!!! Thanks Bonnie for the great teaching videos!!
Grazie e bellissimo ne sono innamorata ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Questo mi rende molto felice Angela!
Glad I found this video. Have the pattern but stuck already on row after first sl st row. Very confusing written pattern for those of us Jeannine to read patterns thanks
Such a Pretty Shawl. Love that color. I like simple stitch es. Those look to advanced for me...😊
You can always try making small swatches of the stitches used and see what you think Jamie!
Hi good job💟💟💟I wanna, ask if iwant to crochet a larger size how many chains should I begin with??
J'adore vos travaux.İls sont formidable.♥
Merci Pek!
Thanks for your work its difficult for me but lt also differant and very beautful
Hope this works out for you Zozo! This one can be challenging, but nice when complete.
Starting this in May and may need help with this pattern.
Hello
I absolutely love all your patterns,! and above all you teach well
thank you I wish to have the ability to crochet as well as you.
Thank you
Dr:craig
Thank you for your kind words! If you keep practicing you'll be able to do any of my patterns. Just takes time to establish the muscle memory.
Hermoso.
Bonnie, could I substitute the yarn used for Caron Simply Soft? Or what would you recommend? Anything with wool and I don't get along so well.
This design uses a DK weight yarn, which is thinner than Caron Simply Soft yarn. Caron Simply Soft LIGHT yarn should work very well though, if you can find it. I believe AC Moore stores still carries it, and you may be able to find it on-line as well. The color palate is limited though. It might be worth a trip to a yarn shop to see what is available in your area. There are many excellent DK weight yarns on the market today. Two that come to mind are Berroco's DK Comfort yarn (nylon/acrylic blend), and Cascade's DK Cherub (acrylic/nylon), and both are economically priced.
Hi Bonnie, Love this shawl, bought the pattern 2 years ago, but haven't tried it yet, have however made 2 of your throws. Would it be possible;e to start this using foundation single crochet. Thanks
If that is easier for you you can give it a try. The pattern does call for a perimeter round and may leave that side a bit more bulky though.
I'm crazy about the color! And I might have to shell out a few bucks for the pattern. (Although I've been known to make things along with the tutorial, or my own written summary of the tutorial.)
This yarn is also very economical for the blend. Excellent yarn & value.
Would it make a big difference to use maybe caron simply soft or a #4 yarn and if you think that will work , which yarn would you suggest?
That is going to be very thick for this project. I would strongly recommend sticking with a DK weight yarn. Any DK yarn (wool, or acrylic or blend) should work. I would however stay away from cotton because of the weight of that yarn.
Hi, Bonnie! I love the look of the finished shawl and am so excited about completing such a beautiful piece. I'm basically a beginner so may be in over my head. I have been working on this for the last 2 months. I'm hoping you can prevent me from ripping it all out and starting over a third time. My stole is measuring 65" long and only about 13" wide. I really want the drape as pictured. Have toyed with a few options, like adding another arrow row and woven section, but not sure what adjustments I'd need to make to the back portion. Do you have suggestions, or am I doomed to starting over? I wish the pattern had measurements for each "section." (Arrow section, woven section, lace, etc.) It might have saved me. Definitely glad I found your videos they help a lot!! Thanks for any help you can give!
You are about spot on for the width of the stole portion. If you add the back to this you should get plenty of coverage. The drape (or lack thereof) may be due to the yarn used, or possibly the tightness of the crocheting? It is hard to say without seeing the fabric in person. You may be just fine to continue on and make the back and add to the stole. Wishing you the very best Amy!
So beautiful!! I need the written pattern
Tess Vowels that is available from Annie’s here: www.anniescatalog.com/detail.html?prod_id=110222
Just want to be sure I understand properly. The 2nd woven stitch row, you are placing the woven stitch in the open space between the previous rows stitches and not b into a stitch itself? Love the arrow stitch. Can the woven stitch be used on its own for a blanket? Has the woven stitch been done using a dc before? Interesting stitch.
Kim Quinn yes, you are correct. Work woven stitches of rows 2 and above in between woven stitches of previous rows.😊
Can I use a small er hook size my stole seems to b much to long I do not know why
The stole portion of this design does tend to be on the longer side. You may actually want to use a smaller hook, or make the stole shorter by using fewer stitches.
Hi Bonnie, Whie loving this pattern, i can't seem to get it right on creating that ridge that's the sc before the arrow. mine is flat while yours kind of looks like a ridge, please help, thank you
Here is a short video on the low front ridge. I hope this is helpful!

Hi Bonnie, I was just wondering if there's a row missing on the instructions. After row 86, the pattern says to repeat rows 3 to 10 for rows 87 -94. Should row 22 be repeated first, prior to rows 87-94?
The URL for the pattern is no longer valid. Do you have a current URL for the pattern? Thank you!
Thanks for letting me know. Here's the updated URL: www.anniescatalog.com/detail.html?prod_id=110222
Please were did you get you crochet hook from thank you
These are Susan Bates hooks with a bamboo handle. I believe I found these at Joanne Fabrics. Here's a link: www.joann.com/susan-bates-bamboo-handle-aluminum-head-crochet-hooks/xprd90120.html
Can you please tell me the percentage of the wool to the acrylic in the dk yarn coz we don't have such yarn in our country
Dear Rimo,
This yarn is 52% acrylic, 40% wool,8% nylon, 290 yards per skein. Please feel free to use any dk (double knitting) weight yarn available to you. Where are you from?
Blessings,
Bonnie Barker
BonnieBayCrochet.com
BonnieBayCrochet thanks alot for your quick reply. I'm from Egypt and all we have here are Alize, Himalaya, yarn art & kortopu
That's why I'm asking about the percentages
Could you please give a weight for each ball or hank of yarn please? In Ireland it is sold by weight, also the hooks are done in mm sizes as well, what is an I in mm please.
Would it also work if you do a double (single) crochet foundation chain?
Many thanks, an Irish crochet fan.
Each hank is 3.5 oz. Here's more information on the yarn: www.berroco.com/yarns/vintage-dk. An "I or 9" hook is 5.50 mm. You can try the foundation chain if you would like, but the pattern calls for working on both sides of the chain. Wishing you all the very best Karen! I hope to visit your beautiful country again.
Hi how many games is required please tell me and so nice pattern I like 👍
Hi Bonnie, I am having a lot of trouble getting my arrow rows to look nice. I have enough yarn to make 3 of these and I'm feeling discouraged. Would it work to substitute braided cable for arrow?
I bought your book of Contemporary Celtic Crochet and love the way the cable looks on cover photo. My previous comment should not have said braided cable but just cable.
kim de pagter if you can send me a photo of the trouble I’ll be happy to look at it to see whether I can help you. You can send photos to bonniebay@me.com. The braided cable is crocheted vertically, whereas the arrow is a horizontally crocheted stitch, so I don’t recommend this as a substitute.
Just the plain old cable runs horizontal, right?
Yes, the cable stitch (see attached video link) can be a substitute, although this seems like a more difficult stitch than the Arrow to me. It is a lovely stitch and one of my favorites! Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/4FDGz3SWW_Q/видео.html
This is gorgeous! It is to long though for the prayer shawls I make. Does the pattern come with the stitch count? We make shawls 24x66. Would love to do this one.
You can alter this, but it would require a total redesign. You may be able to find shawls that will meet your dimensions better here: ruclips.net/p/PLoIugZBYOS0W5DXdlQZK8Pu-xswsYyyYo
does anyone have a recommendation of an alternative yarn if the recommended yarn is hard to find? I am a novice and do not know my yarns well.
Hi Stacy! Any DK weight yarn will work on this design. I even remade this using a very light worsted weight yarn and it was fine, and only added 2” to the Stole length.
Hi Bonnie, no luck on amazon for the Lisdoonarna shawl. Maybe it's somewhere else?
Hi Sue! This written pattern is owned by Annie's and can be purchased here: www.anniescatalog.com/detail.html?prod_id=110222
Thankyou for the wonderful tutorial. Would any light weight yarn work to make this stole.
If it’s a 2 or 3 weight you should be fine. Just check the gauge to be sure.
hello. I would love to know the brand of hook you are using, please. the head is pointed yet it's an inline hook that is bates style... would love to know what it is or where you purchased it from. thanks!!!!
This is also a Susan Bates but with a bamboo handle. Here's a link to the store where I found these: acmoore.com/product/104236431/silvalume-bamboo-handle-crochet-hooks/675281. They also carry another Susan Bates hook with a handle they call "soft" that is even better. I can't crochet without this brand!
BonnieBayCrochet thank you so very much!!! I use boye because of the more pointed head but love the bates style. I have a hard time with rounded heads... and your hook is the best of both worlds!!
Maria Kristina Hawl yes, I am happily spoiled by these hooks! It is also wonderful that these are very economically priced.❤️❤️❤️
Gorgeous color and pattern .. I'm wondering if Hobby Lobby has the yarn you're using..would another brand give the same result
Thank you for sharing your a work..just beautiful !
Thank you Sonja! I did recently remake this in a light worsted weight yarn (Berroco Ultra Alpaca), however their Vintage DK yarn is excellent. You may be able to find this at discount prices as the holidays approach. I think using a thicker lower cost acrylic (like Red Heart) will produce a stiffer, unyielding fabric with this design.
My stole was only 14 inches wide should i add another pattern or will it work like that. I think it is the yarn i used. If I add another woven section and a arrow section it will be about 19 inches.
It should be fine if you are adding the back as well.
BonnieBayCrochet Thanks
Thank you so much. I bought the pattern instructions but it is so helpful to have the video instructions. The shawl came out perfect even with the adjustments i had to make. I love all your patterns.
@@ablunk01 I'm so very glad that this worked out for you! Blessings...
Hi Bonnie is this hard as I cannot get the video to play
Sylvia Watts you may need to check your internet connection. It plays here! I hope this works out for you!

I am relatively new to Crochet. I was wondering if Lion Brand cupcake yarn or if Lion Brand shawl in a ball yarns would work. I just happen to have these two yarns in the amount needed. This would be the first wearable that I shall attempt.
Personally I would stick with a solid color on this design. The color changes will compete a bit too much with the textures I think.
@@BonnieBayCrochet I have noticed that even when something says a 3 or 4 that their sizes can be the same. Would the cupcake be the same thickness that we are looking for in the yarn for this project. That will give me a better guide for what yarn to buy. Thank you for your time.
Can this pattern be made with 100% acrylic yarn
You can use any fiber you wish on this Singh. Just be sure you use DK (#3) weight to get similar results.
Beautiful work!!!! Congrats!!how much yarn will we need? in grams?? I'm waiting for your answer. Thanks!!!!!
All the information you need is in this introductory video for this project: ruclips.net/video/-b2jc540fy8/видео.html. I am out of the country at the moment, so I'm afraid you'll need to do the conversion to grams.
Thank you for the answer!!!!!!!
The stole part that I am currently working on (no trim) looks MUCH shorter than pictured..... it doesn't even come to my hips...... I've been keeping track of my stitches..... I'm really not sure what I've done wrong or how to remedy the situation.... any ideas? Has anyone bought the pattern? Is there an option to alter (lengthen or shorten) the pattern?
You can always send photos of your work to me at bonniebay@me.com and I can take a look.
Thank you so much. It's a beautiful project and I intend it as a gift but I have definitely messed it up somehow 😅. I will send a pic now.
The instructions say the stole should be 77" long. Is that with the lace ? I'm on the lower ridge row after the woven stitch and it's measuring 64".
I believe this is the measurement with the added lace. The weight of the stole will also add inches.
Can someone help please, I need to know what 7 hanks means?
Hi Evelyn! It is another word for skein, except that hanks need to be wound into a ball or cake of yarn when purchased, kind of like the old days. Here's a video of me winding one of these: ruclips.net/video/Eau8wqWlTlg/видео.html
@@BonnieBayCrochet okay thank you
How many gram wool you use
You will need approximately 2,030 yards of a DK weight yarn for this project. The weight will vary depending upon the fiber you select.
What weight yarn ? 3? 4?
Darlene Jordan This design uses a DK or#3 weight yarn.

Hi Bonnie, I hit the link for the pattern and it said the pattern was unavailable. Is this just a mistake? I learn so much from but like to have the pattern. I grew up with my Grandmother who was a beautiful crocheter and she thought me at a young age to make pineapple dollies however, she could not read patterns, she just looked at the pictures. So the point here is I started to learn to read patterns only a year ago at age 63. Ill contact Annies and ask. Thank You for all the time you spend so gracefully teaching wonderful techniques.
Sorry about the inconvenience Gail. I had to move my store to LoveCrafts.com back in July. Yes, this pattern is only available from Annie's.com. They still own the rights to this design.

Hi my name is Anne. I loved working on this project. My measurements are off in length and and width. It measures at 14 x 51. How can I extend the length without re-doing the stole: thank you
Are you including the lace trim in the measurements? This will make it slightly longer.
No , does not include the lace. I j just completed video #1.
@@Mr5529 How did your gauge compare? Quite honestly you should be fine with 51" if you are ok with that.
Does the 72” include the lace portion? 52” (without lace) is to short. The ends come to my waste.
I did the 4” gauge that was in the pattern that I purchased from Annie’s.
I don’t buy Lattes or Cookies 🤷♀️ , so how much $ are you talking about ?
Ha ha! I don't either Ester. Are you asking about the cost of the Lisdoonvarna Shawl pattern? This is currently $6.95 with Annie's. Link should be in the video description.
This is beautiful. I wish I could buy patterns, but I can't follow patterns.
You may be alright just following the videos. You can always write down which row you are on so you don't forget.
You may find that by getting the pattern then watching and following the videos you can learn how to read patterns and how to follow the instructions.
Good luck on your yarn journey!
Dear Bonnie, I've found you a few weeks before and I finished the Gaithersburg stole. I just need to make the fringe, but I'm waiting the steamer that I ordered.
Even if I started that stole with 24 more chains, the stole is too short for me! I'm 172 cm tall.
I would really like to make this stole, too, but I'm "scared" a little bit if will gonna be long enough for me! Another problem is, I don't like to work with large hook!
What do you think, Bonnie, if I use 4,50 mm crochet hook and start with 12×4 more stitches, will be OK?
I know, you are very busy, but hopefully you will help me!
Sorry for my English! Love from Csilla, Hungary 🙏⚘🙏⚘🙏
The stole portion is already longer than usual for this design, and longer than the Gaithersburg Stole. You may be fine as it is.

I have 12” not 17. What went wrong ??
If you send me a photo to bonniebay@me.com I may be able to see. Also, which section are you referring to?
BonnieBayCrochet I thought the woven stitch looked smaller but it measures 3 3/4” and every other rows are exactly what you showed. I put my heart in this beautiful work and just like your other videos I have made. I don’t know how to send a picture from my iPad but I will try. Actually it looks just like you showed but the woven stitch finish looks smaller.
@@kathyhlinak6395 What yarn did you use? How does your gauge measure? I'm sorry you are having difficulty with this. One solution is to work more rows of woven stitches to widen the stole.
I am currently working on this project and I believe the measured width on the stole is incorrect. Mine is 15" wide, and not 17". Not sure where this error occurred, but I wanted to make you aware.
BonnieBayCrochet I used a 4 ply yarn, however I used a H/8-5.00MM crochet hook. Did the hook make the difference? I will have to start over because my measurements are 59x12
