How To Cut a Wide Notch Using Simple Tools

  • Learn how to cut a notch of any width using your ordinary circular saw. Just make a series of cuts, and then remove the waste in between with a chisel and sanding to get great, repeatable results.

    You're just cutting the end off. That's hardly a notch. In what manner would you be able to use a hammer to knock out an actual notch in the center?

      You don't really need a hammer. You slide your chisel in between two of the cuts in the middle of your notch, then give it a sharp twist. It'll pop one or both of them out. Keep doing that until you have enough room to set a piece of wood, old file, metal ruler, or whatever against the next cut, then rap it with a hammer to pop it out. Repeat until your cut is clear of debris.

      @@bobcostas9716 Great tips. I normally do a similar way. On softwood, I use a horse rasp for cleaning out the notches. It works great, especially on rough/outdoor projects.
