Had an old timer tell me once, never let your scrap/trash hit the ground. I have always done this and it defintly saves time when you incorporate the thought behind it. I bought a dump trailer and then only touch trash once. If you throw it on the ground and have a trailer you have to hand unload that's alot of work and bending over. Same applies to material handling when possible/applicable.
That's why I pay my kids to do that stuff. Your not gonna have a trailer next to you everytime you cut.
I just love the armchair experts trying to correct and educate you.......the builds I’ve seen you do have all been top notch (sawzall, chisel or whatever). Keep up the great videos

People correct these guys because the dumbfuckery is so in your face. I mean come on. Are you going to really use the world's shortest saw-zall blade ever conceived to take the corner out of a notch that size? Are you going to call a wooden beam a girder? Sure if you want to get laughed at and corrected. The people that correct these guys are people who would make the video perfect or wouldn't make it at all. And my god the PPE on this guy to use the leafblower. Wow. Not a job I'd want to be on.

I just did this with my 12” slide miter saw. Tedious but effective. Just a beast to move around, mine was at home so no big deal, thanks for the new tips though

Hey there's a technique I learnt years ago & that is to put a scrap piece of timber Infront of the end notch & when you strike it with the hammer head not the claw it takes out all the notches in one go clean.
Very minimal cleanup required with the chisel afterwards, it worked for me but try it out for yourself & see if the results are any different to your method 👍
This is the only way to support a beam on a deck. Good work.
Another good video boys. Surely you've heard of Essential Craftman? His channel is right up your alley. He's shown a few of the same tips and tricks as you guys have, in this case notching posts by cutting a bunch of slices, and same with the tape measure video. Most of all though he's just such an inspiration. He's the human manifestation of Integrity if ever there was one.

My favorite tool to cut knotches in posts is the chain saw two cuts and I'm done.
Like a boss
People can get really good with a chainsaw, plus I'd use it to clear more of the forest away from this house to help prevent the house burning down in a forest fire.

Or you could use a long blade an make 2 cuts after using the circular saw an be done faster than messing with a chisel... your method works well also. For DIY people
I use a 8 1/4’’ circular saw for my post. One tool 3 cuts and done.
Great tip! Thanks. if you have a larger saw available (8 1/4” or larger) you can cut all the way through the 6x6 in two opposing cuts.
We have a huge Makita beam saw that can cut all the way through a 6X6 in one pass, but it is hard to handle (weighs about 35 pounds) and most of the time I prefer to use the smaller hand tools we already have out.
Nice job there, just did it yesterday with a 6 x 6 notching 3" on the front and 1 1/2" on the side for a corner post. Wish I would have seen this because I cut out the 1/2 " or so in the center with a hand saw.

Doesn't seem to be anyone round...probably a Saturday when no one else coming in or early morning or end of day. The whole team seems a real team and super supportive of everything. This is great for us guys (I am a tiler / waterproofer in New Zealand), but also great for thier business.....showing clients they know how to get it done - several different ways.
My boss shows up at 8, gets all the tools out, starts half of everything then half the time suddenly remembers he has to leave at 4 🤨 strangely before we start cleaning anything up lol

I have some 6 x 6 posts already installed for my deck. I am thing if cutting dados for the horizontal fencing i want to use(1 inch thick)....is it too risky..and should i use a circular saw...or a router...I am thinking a hand held router will be me more control. I don't have room for mistakes as the posts are already installed.
2 things, well 3. 1: thanks for the video. 2: is that a stiletto hammer? I thought y’all switched over to the BOSS hammers. Would like an update on the hammers from the video that you did before. 3: did you really just throw those timber screws in the trash pile? I hope you did that for dramatic effect and went and got them out after the shot. LOL! Thanks again. Long blades are also less precise... but for this it probably wouldn’t make a huge difference.
What if I only need to take out ¼ (or a corner) of the post? Would scoring it halfway work?
Which is best notch the beam or set 2x10’s on top of post? Deck is going to be 5 ft high.
I have posts that I am notching and going to put in beams. My beam lumber is not all the same width. Some as much as a 3/8” variation. Should I cut the girders to make them the same width?

did that dewalt saw do all that with just the one battery ? i've shyed away from cordless because i'm afraid i'll be doin something and in the middle of the cut ,, the battery gives up,, i have the corded version of that saw you used,, & dewalt saws seem unkillable,, so i think i'm gonna try me a cordless
Jake you get a lot of cuts out of a battery, tools are very efficient nowadays. I run a DeWalt 54 volt flexvolt circular saw and twelve inch mitre saw and get all of the cuts that I need without having to change the batteries all the time. Cord free jobsites are all the rage these days and are very efficient and easy to obtain. 👍😃
@@garethheathcote4988 i do auto body as my job , so my job site is my house, or m inlaws', so that's not so much my worry, but i'll tell ya, the cordless drill and impact driver have changed the way i work at my shop, besides my big grinder and my buffer and the heat gun , everything is air ,, but even at my house , not having even the drill driver extention cords has made it safer and less a pain in the but, what i have made though , is an adapter for an ac hook up for my cordless stuff,, the big boys should try something like that , as a just in case, or a way to connect it to your truck, ya know what i'm sayin
Did you cut this with a standard 7 1/4 blade? I am a gc and don’t do much work anymore hands on but I am building my deck and my blade depth won’t go down? What am I missing. Feel like I am like all the guys with nasty comments on here… “man with truck” who thought they know everything.
Do y’all notch posts the same way if you’re extending them all the way up to support a deck roof? I’ve looked through 507 of the IRC which covers deck construction but not sure how to integrate a roof using the same posts.
Ok. But how do u do a side socket in the middle of the post or beam? A socket thatvis not a whole way through? For ex a socket in main beam for puting a joist beam into a main beam?

I hate how rounded over the edges of your posts are. Makes them easier to carry and less rough to bump into I’m sure but my goodness it would kill me to do some decks with a frckn post like that.
What's the best way to notch if posts are already set, like for a pole barn, and you have to get up on a ladder to notch the posts?

Hey would you joist tape the cut out notch and bottom of the post?
I spray my notches and bottoms with bed liner or undercoating. Can get it in a rattle can at any hardware or automotive store and it’s faster than taping.

@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers I could be wrong but those appeared to be Headloks by Fastenmaster. They have a flat head with a spider drive. The Timberloks have a 5/16 hex drive and a smaller head. Fastenmaster makes some incredible fasteners for general construction and specifically deck building. I am a professional deck builder with 29 years experience. We have come a long way from setting 4x4 post in concrete and lag screwing headers to houses. Thank God for technology!

Why don’t you bring your house wrap to the inside of the windows and openings ? Just curious everyone has there own way
Good question.. we wrap the openings with zip tape to seal it up better. Laps over the house wrap and keeps the edges of plywood from getting wet and swelling

What noob you never put a sawzall blade that way , you flip it the other way so you can cut straighter and deeper
