Hi! Great idea. Thanks for sharing it. I am wondering why sew the elastic in place rather than make a casing. With a casing lace can be adjusted or replaced if necessary.
About 1966 ready-made came out with the "bra dress." The idea was great! Unfortunately, one cup size didn't fit all 😁 So this is a great hack...thanks for sharing!.
As others have said, this is just brilliant! You made me laugh so much talking about 'the girls'. Mine certainly need all the support they can get🤣🤣🤣The dress at the start of the video looks fabulous on you!!!
I love this! Could I do this and skip the bottom elastic? I find my bra irritates me. I have a pain condition. I look for the widest elastic bras possible but would rather build it in or even make a long light bra to wear.
Thank you. The bottom elastic adds support. That being said, you could try it and see- maybe you don’t need as much support? Also, there are really soft elastics out there. There is an elastic made for underwear that has a super soft feel on the side that touches your skin. I believe it is called “plush back” elastic. I found some on Etsy.
I bought the D/E cups. Even though that is a larger cup size than I need, I really wanted fuller coverage, and the cup traditionally do not cover enough for me.
Hi. I just found your videos and I love them! I have never sewn a swimsuit, but I really want to since I cannot find RTW with a good fit. I need to know the difference between power net and power mesh. Which is the "strongest one" and what would I choose for making swimsuits, bras, etc. You have a new subbie. TYIA
Thank you for your kind words! As for your question, some people use the terms interchangeably, but according to what I found on the web, there is a difference. Power net is more structured and power mesh is lighter. Here is an article I found online: greenstylecreations.com/blogs/news/a-crash-course-in-mesh All that being said, I think some manufacturers use the terms interchangeably as well.
Kim, it was so interesting 😀. I have just a question. How would you procede with a top wich have no shoulder, for exemple, True Beauty from Ellie and Mac ? Thank you so much.
Here is what I would try: 1. line the front with cups & powernet and put elastic bands above and below the breasts and catch those in the side seams. (You May have to trim the points off the tops of the cups) 2. Double the powernet for extra strength 3. Add a snug 2 or 3” wide elastic band in the back, free from the dress back but connected at the side seams.
I'm definitely going to try this, thanks so much Kim! I really love your Hepburn dress, looks great on you. Think I'll go take a look at the pattern :)
Thank you Kim for this informative video. My question is do I use the power net fabric AND lining fabric on top of that when making a regular full length swimsuit?
What might you recommend for someone who does NOT need that much support? Basically I’m very small, (an A cup if that) and can do with probably with just the power mesh with some sort of extra coverage for when I get ‘cold’ in a place, I want maybe a thicker fabric, like fleece, only not fleece because I don’t want the warmth. I’m taller, thin, and a yoga teacher in her 60’s. I want to start putting bras in my yoga tops but dislike the cups intensely. My favorite bras are just very tight fitting strong stretchy fabric. I have yet to name that fabric, it’s not the power mesh, it’s not a tricot, it’s a cotton Lycra but dense. Yoga tops with built in bras have that elastic going around my chest that is very uncomfortable to wear, so I may end up experimenting. Thanks for the idea of putting a bra in a dress tho, never occurred to me. (Most of my bras would fit that dress easily)
I’m wondering if you just put a layer of super thin foam between the outer and the lining? It would breathe some but protect you against the effects of the cold. Why couldn’t you use cotton Lycra for your lining? I got some from girl Charlee and it was pretty dense. I wish my “girls” were small and contained. I need the power of power mesh.
Dorothy’s Daughter great idea, thanks. And maybe you don’t wish it, since to find a bra, I have to shop in the teen section and hope I find something other than push-up or really thick padding. It’s no fun. Headed to Girl Charlee now.....
My oldest daughter wants a bodysuit with bra underwire. She says she wants to wear a lace bodysuit without a real bra. I was wondering how I would do this. xx
Can you maybe line the bodysuit with powernet (like dance leotards)? Then you can add the cups just like I did in the one piece swimsuit. Here is that video- about halfway through, I demonstrate how to place cups. ruclips.net/video/o1kHXk--X68/видео.html
I’m new to sewing…where did you get a pattern of such heavy paper. That may be a stupid question but I have no idea.

I have the same upper bust and full bust measurements as you do. May I ask what cup size you bought for your swimsuit? Thank You. Love your channel!

Hi, Kathleen! Not necessarily, unless it was a light colored or see-through fabric
Thank you so much. This is very helpful .
I hope it helps! I’m super excited to wear my dress :-)
