If working in retail has taught me one thing, it's that customers fundementally do not understand how a store works and I assume they think it is largely run by magic

I honestly shopped a lot at where I worked so I knew just about where everything was depending on the product XD still do despite working in a completely unrelated department.
Very true. Here's the thing, though. I worked at a Vons 15 years ago and all of these training "tips" are spot-on to what shift and store managers expect of every employee. Even the cashiers. You're supposed to take any downtime you have, or every time you walk through the store to familiarize yourself with the layout, and where you can buy every single item.
It makes no sense, but it's all part of that package.

Well it depends. I live in a small town and everyone working at the grocery store also gets all their own food from there, so they usually know where stuff is.

I've worked at a McDonald's for 3 years and im currently working in a gourmet retro burger place (up until I start vet tech school this year....) and OMG the "right" answers would get you FIRED!!!!! You would get so much sass from so many crazy customers!!!! But sometimes I wish I could get away with the wrong answers.....

I just quit my cashier job, and have watched this for the 4th time. It's 2 in the morning, and I find Ian and Chad's commentary very funny and soothing.

First all of those petty things they said or did have been exact things I have thought. Secondly the "right" way was WRONG!

Those 'wrong examples' they showed, I can't tell you how many times I wanted to do something like that to a customer.

The other day a customer wanted me to do something I couldn't do and they insisted I could. Customer is always right
Customers get mad all the time when they want to bring in meat to be cut. It's a federal regulation that I can't do that. Customers always right.
I worked in retail optometry for 11 months (the one with the owl) - I couldn't handle it after the first month, not sure how I lasted 11 months. I have never seen so many temper tantrums from people in their 60s in my life! One guy even growled at me like a dog. I have no idea why.
As a cashier I appreciate how truly amazing all the bad examples represent how I want to treat customers.

Customers don't know how stores work. They'll ask someone who works in the bakery where the bean sprouts are and get upset when they tell them they don't.
It still applies to modern day retail. Keep a smile even if confronted with a rude customer. Its hard but getting mad at them can make things worse!
