When Nick Diaz said 'If you want to get better, search the Internet and watch RUclips', I thought 'Right Nick, encourage the Internet warriors to think they're fighters even more'. Then I ran into this channel and I've gotten better every single time. I just take one of these clips into my gym and practice it until I get it down. Judo is perfect, but they don't teach it much around here, and I've gotten so much work in by just practicing what these videos show. Thanks for the explanation guys!
Im a Karate student and like most people I have to juggle my martial arts training with my family, friends and of course work life. Having these videos really helped me learn alot that I dont have the time to train else where. We watch these videos and try them out in our classes, its something different but its very fun. Thanks Submissions101 !
Judo, Japanese Jujutsu, and Greco Roman wrestling are all wonderful standing grappling arts. Thank you for starting this Judo series, especially during the time of the Olympic games.
The cool thing I have noticed over time searching around for new techs is that sometimes I come across gems like this, that I actually have done through improvisation. Maybe not the exact technique to the mark but very similar. Thanks for another great post.
Ahhhhh!!! Harai Goshi, my Tokui Waza!!! You can get this very powerful throw from a lot of different angles and grips. It's also awesome in combinations. Throw usually leaves you ready for immediate Juji Gatame. That's if the dude isn't unconscience from being slammed on the pavement. Mike Swain demonstrated about 30 judo throws without GI on some sports show a few years back. This one you just wrap your arm around the back of his head and pull on the forearm. Great video!!!!
I done this throw in like my first lesson of Ju Jutsu, Its been stuck in my head ever since, like one of my favourite throws I think works well in near enough any situation. Good videos man.
Thanks for showing judo techniques!! Matt is great!!! i've allways been of fan of how he explains things!!! Thanks for explaining that pull of the sleeve many people think they can make that throw without it and they dont understand they can hurt ur partners knee!!
Same here, I requested judo moves about a year ago and I'm very happy to see them. I would like to know which throws are learned for what belt though, but I know sometimes it depends on the school or country.
That was very good Sir and a great approach for baiting a reaction to a throw.. Jigoro Kano invented Harai goshi as a wonderful response to a Uki trying to step around his O-goshi and of course a million other reason's, one of the most effective throws in judo and my personal favorite.. O garuma "hip wheel" is a great one as well.... Thank you again so much for your excellent technique and video's..
I loved watching the Judo at the Olympics this year, really gave me a sense of the practical use too., everyone wears something with a colar, at least 80% of people have sleeves, plus unlike Jiu Jitsu you don't have the danger of colliding on a concrete floor with your attacker (if you do it right I imagine). I'm really thinking of taking up Judo, especially the amount of times i've been in a confrontation in my town.
I liked the explanation for the set up. Feels almost like I'd understand it, but I know that when I go to mat and try it, I'll be lost - again:) Thanks
Thanks for showing this! I took Judo for a few months, but didn't like how the classes were ran :/ I might take some sort of grappling martial art in the future! :D
You are welcome! We have some other great videos coming in the next few weeks including wrestling throws and more judo throws! Please share this video on facebook, twitter and elsewhere to help keep these videos free! ;-)
Rousey has been a judoka for over 15 years. That kind of grappling experience adds up. I've been backyard wrestling since childhood. I can land a mean suplex, but I've also had my fair share of injuries. Submissions 101 specialists will agree, nothing comes close to real mat experience and discussions.
This always hurts drilling it. Expect to get the wind knocked out of you. You can try and break fall but I can never get the timing right. It's always too fast. Judo you give your back a lot but this as a through that is a must have in your box of tricks. Before hop on or drop knee
mmafrankie23 Yeah, well, the number one thing Judo guys like to argue is "What throw is this?". The answer is technically it's both. I don't teach it as a sweep I teach it as a reap. It is what it is.
+mmafrankie23 I think according to the Kodokan's videos a harai goshi is simply a modification that came as a result of uki stepping around tori's hip to escape the throw. So literally "Sweeping hip" or harai goshi is very much about sweeping the legs away, it is simply the final touches of the kake(execution). So before anything it is a hip throw, then the sweeping motion comes, the sweeping motion is why it is often mistaken for o-guruma and vis versa.
I find that this is the natural progression to O Goshi if your opponent counters with lots of lateral movement. It should basically be a hip throw with the leg there to prevent said lateral motion. The leg doesn't go back to sweep, it should be used as an extension of the hip, extended to the side.
My karate does judo hip throws. Or a judo hip throw lol, but anyway it's kinda hard because its from a bear hug defense. So that's not that much momentum towards me! But y'all have a good of idea of how to do it. Thank you
No sir, if you do the technique properly no strength will be needed. A huge principle in Judo is off balancing an opponent. By off balancing you reduce their strength by putting them where their body isnt very efficient, and it also makes them easy to throw. With this technique, you want your opponent to be on their toes so you can throw them easier. Thats why he pushes them down to get their reaction to push back up, making themselves tall and easy to throw. If you have any more questions, please ask away!
adeel neymar No you dont need to, as long as you do the move properly your opponent will immediately fall due to loss of balance. It doesnt matter how heavy your opponent is. Its all about balance.
you must have good technique, which requires hundreds of repititions maybe thousands. failing at a throw against a bigger and stronger opponent puts you in a vulnerable position to be countered, and i'm sure all of us who practice know the pain that follows.
i agree with you but in general they dont like to be on the ground i rolled with shodan or higher judoka that try to hold me in a kesa gatame, even a white belt pretty quickly takes the back or sweeps
I love Judo but I know nothing about it, this for me seems the same as the Uchi Mata, I assume there is a difference, so what is that difference? Thanks!
Nico Contreras I have short legs and wanted to do Tai Otoshi in my youth, and could never make it work. After accidentally hitting Harai Goshi whilst attempting to set up Tai Otoshi I realized that Harai was good for my body type and that Tai Otoshi wasn't. Different throws for different Joes.
No, you can however do this throw No Gi! Overhooks work great if your opponent is driving into you(Mir vs Nelson), an Underhook works well if you have head position and your opponent is resisting your pushing him, and finally you can headlock hip throw an opponent and finish with the sweeping leg action. Be careful with the last one because if you don't dominate the position when you hit the ground you'll get your back taken, you have two options if your arms tight around his head as you land grab your own inner thigh with that arm(keeping his head) and jack his neck up tightly while pinching his arm between your body and your other arm(loose the arm/loose the pin) if you land loose around his head start swimming that arm for an Underhook immediately. It's Gi not ghee, ghee is clarified butter.
Cool use to know a guy names John page kinda like "Johnny cage" if you played mortal kombat anyways, he would always be getting into bar fights and was a 2nd Dan blackbelt lets just say this throw was known to kill bar tables.
Judo has to be quick in order to be effective on the ground. Judoka's don't like to be on their back for long. Judges like to see ippon, or an effective hold down. If you are able to effectively restrain your opponent, you can snag a good joint or choke. Gi chokes are effective, but they are also situation-ally effective. By that I mean, a rear collar choke works best from the rear closed guard, and on a clothed opponent. I could talk strategy on chokes for a long time :)
I love the aesthetics of Judo. However, with this Harai Goshi sweeping hip throw I think there is a danger of the opponent trying to grab one's waist and charge. I would think that this might be a reaction of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners.
No moreso than BJJ, since most of those moves come from Judo. I wouldn't say that Judoka don't like to be on their back long, as Kosen Judo tournaments specialize in groundwork. Ronda Rousey is a Judoka and has no problem with being on the ground.
Yeah. I'm of the opinion that good grappling is good grappling no matter what it's called. I would seek out the best you can find. Judo is taught in many different ways at different places, If it is taught poorly you will not be a good grappler. It's better to learn from champions of the sport you are into. So if wrestling is big in your area and not so much Judo def go with wrestling. Just research anyplace you end up at to make sure you are giving yourself the best chance to learn
Find another Judo school. You can't judge an art because of how a class you went to was taught. Where I live there are so many to choose from (I understand that might not be the case for you).
Yeah. Just grab his forearm instead of the sleeve, and instead of grabbing the back of the collar, just wrap your arm around the back of head the same way it's done on the video.
When Nick Diaz said 'If you want to get better, search the Internet and watch RUclips', I thought 'Right Nick, encourage the Internet warriors to think they're fighters even more'. Verrrrrrry helpful. Already knew this throw but the detail made my throw so much more powerful! Oss!

I love these throws you guys have been uploading, very helpful techniques
You can do this to strangers walking down the street. But you shouldn't.
LOL! only if they hurt you
awesome seeing an australian coaching on an internationally renowned show :)
I liked the explanation for the set up. Feels almost like I'd understand it, but I know that when I go to mat and try it, I'll be lost - again:) Thanks
REALLY well explained! Cheers! I do muay thai but i love all the martial arts
Very nice! With this explanation, the leg sweep almost looks like Osoto Gari from the front.
Thanks for showing this! I took Judo for a few months, but didn't like how the classes were ran :/ I might take some sort of grappling martial art in the future! :D

Really nice explanation. Thanks!
YES!!!! WE WANT MOAR JUDO!
My favorite throw.

OMG... Thank you so much! Now I will be the best bully in school ^_^
This so helped me in Judo! Thank you!
well executed throw.
Wdf man you make this look so easy
These are great!
Why does sub 101 keep turning comments off on other videos? Did some one hurt their feelings?
ALUCINANTE bro.
Thank you sensei.
Thank you Sensei

fantastic.
Gran aporte ... sigan así por favor !!!!
Wow! This Tutorial Is Good! Thanks For Uploading This Video!! I Love It!!
is there a no gi version?
Could you do this without the Gi?
que bela queda!
Hey, Judo goes standup and ground grappling as well. :)
nice! way to turn the shoulders. lots of people forget to do that :)
What I'd like to know is how do you effectively breakfall during this technique? I feel like no matter what, it is always a painful landing.
try keeping a stiff body and turn to youre side
+MobiusCoin Sometimes, I tend to look down and I fall to the side too much. Try looking at the ceiling the whole time.
+MobiusCoin fall more
awesome
Thanks you are the best...I like Harai Goshi Its my Tokiwaza, I know something good now
i always practice these techniques in my livingroom
I have always been told that Harai goshi Is not a leg sweep like shown here. I have been shown the leg does not sweep more of a guide?
mmafrankie23 Yeah, well, the number one thing Judo guys like to argue is "What throw is this?". The answer is technically it's both. I don't teach it as a sweep I teach it as a reap. It is what it is.

Ashi guruma you try n leave your leg as a guide

Please do a straight back suplay (German suplex) :D
Ty
i agree with you but in general they dont like to be on the ground i rolled with shodan or higher judoka that try to hold me in a kesa gatame, even a white belt pretty quickly takes the back or sweeps
He smacc.
He attacc.
He put you on your bacc.
I love Judo but I know nothing about it, this for me seems the same as the Uchi Mata, I assume there is a difference, so what is that difference? Thanks!
Uchi Mata is on the inner leg
Uchimata is an Inner Thigh Throw, Harai is a hip throw. There isn't a HUGE difference, but a little tiny, almost nothing one! :D
Harai Goshi is my Tokui Waza, a very hard throw to stop.
So hard when you have long legs, mine that direction is Tai Otoshi , I have a lot of problems with harai...Do you have any tip for the entry?
Nico Contreras I have short legs and wanted to do Tai Otoshi in my youth, and could never make it work. After accidentally hitting Harai Goshi whilst attempting to set up Tai Otoshi I realized that Harai was good for my body type and that Tai Otoshi wasn't. Different throws for different Joes.
JudoMateo Wow totally the oposite story xD
What if you're fighting an opponent without a ghee? Would you still get a grip on the back of the neck?
No, you can however do this throw No Gi! Overhooks work great if your opponent is driving into you(Mir vs Nelson), an Underhook works well if you have head position and your opponent is resisting your pushing him, and finally you can headlock hip throw an opponent and finish with the sweeping leg action. It's Gi not ghee, ghee is clarified butter.
check out the fight between Cory Devela vs Joe Riggs, a beautiful Harai Goshi to K.O.
We do a similar throw in my Karate dojo, but this is much nicer. Looks more powerful.
hold tricep, and hold at the back of the head to do the grips i assume
Is that legal for bjj?
Most definitely. I'm pretty sure you can do most throws in bjj. Just not allowed to slam people.
Tried this in school .. Ended up breaking my friends arm 😂 great video btw😂
Yeah... Throwing someone who isn't attacking you might not be the best idea. Especially not on hard floors.
Yeah, no you didn't
i was thinking the same thing
Karate of which style have you learned?
meencanta el juxo

every time he drops the poor guy i can't help but to say, DAMMNN! that shit looks like it hhurttt
I love the aesthetics of Judo. However, with this Harai Goshi sweeping hip throw I think there is a danger of the opponent trying to grab one's waist and charge. I would think that this might be a reaction of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners.
I study Shotokan with the SKIF
I did this to my friend at wrestling practice. He didn't know what hit him lol
I like to do this throw from over unders no gi:)

I hope you got that Blue Gi guy ice cream.
A cousin of mine did this to me when we was kids, lucky for me I landed on the bed.
so funny wen hits the gground hahaha 0.46

Yeah, I understand you, but I think Judo is a tough and great martial art. Too bad I only have about 2 or 3 in my city, plus they aren't too great.
I looked this up because apparently this is Vladimir Putin's favourite throw.
I am prety sure thats spelled osu.
OSSSS
Yeah. Just grab his forearm instead of the sleeve, and instead of grabbing the back of the collar, just wrap your arm around the back of head the same way it's done on the video.
this move is very helpful to wrestlers to but u switch to a head lock
0;46
Would this work to a guy who weighs a 100 pounds more? I just want to do this to my fat friend
shoulder lock at the end will end someones career
that's how you're suppose to do it, and no it wont end someone's career unless you try to hurt them.
Formdesolver yeah thats what i meant....
im gonna do this to my girlfriend if she surprise hugs me again
I miss Ari's no-gi techniques...
in my school I knew to do this I throw 8 girls
No this tiknik fooooo
I take karate and the Judo club I went to, wasn't disciplined and seemed like they didn't care as much.
fantastic.
