  • Color is an important element in astrophotos, but where it comes from and how it's managed can be confusing. This video attempts to unravel the mysteries of color and show a few techniques for creating proper color in astrophotos using Photoshop.
I want to extend a special thanks to Alyssa Pagan and Joseph DePasquale of the Space Telescope Science Institute for sharing their workflows, raw images and Photoshop files.

Great stuff! Been doing your process a while now and combining with PI. I Really enjoy the control that PS gives on editing. Love the colorization, will try some stuff out too!

Thank you Craig for another great video! I noticed that you did not mention the natural HSO way of color mapping. The method with colorized saturation is easier and straightforward, I will try that as well. Thanks!

Craig, when and why do you change blending mode from normal to say pass thru or screen. Great tutorial learned plenty on PS

Normal and Pass Thru are both opaque blending modes, screen is a semi-transparent mode. In this process, you would use Normal or Pass Thru if you're only using one or two of the color channels to create color. You would use Screen if you're using all three channels and adding color with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
