YES - so glad you are educating us on the Alum Tanning process........thank you --- step by step, learning from you and teaching others by sharing your content...for the uniodized salt, can we use Pickling salt, or Himalayian Salt? ......thank you
I hope it worked for you. This is basic and a lot of info is missing (I've learned a bit since then). Follow my link to stay connected if you want. I'd love to see what your furs look like. I subbed.
Hi sir, I did alum tanning to my hide few days ago, it completely dried but it is smelling very bad , how could I get rid from this problem without out loosing hair on it .pls answer me sir
I have a coyote pelt cape i got years ago but lost it when moving, so i found it n its really dry like rawhide is there anyway to make it soft n look good again on the flesh side or does it matter.. i would love to send u pics of it n get your opinion
Pretty general wisdom says do NOT use iodized salt. A suggestion--cross out the SALT on your ALUM scoop; if someone else opens that bucket, they need to know what's in there for sure. Wooden stir stick, and a CLEAN GLASS or CLEAN PLASTIC container. NEVER use metal!! Any contamination in your container will be reflected in your results. Use hot water to mix your salt in first, then let it cool before making your full mix. The fumes are quite unpleasant. Also, the finer the salt, the faster it dissolves. Very good video, well done. :)
You know your stuff. This is just what I knew at the time. There are MUCH better ways to tan. Stay with me. I'd love to talk trapping and fur handling with you more. Randall Rydes is my active channel ruclips.net/video/OhC8z4bsk3Q/видео.html
I love how u explained the chemical reaction.. you know what Ur talking about that's what matters lol awesome video tho I have been tanning deer capes like this for 20 years
Heya man, I'm wondering what would happen if an animal (including humans) ate a small amount of Alum? Am I right in thinking that it causes severe dehydration and thirst, and also damages the intestinal lining in that it shrinks the villi - in other words it literally would 'tan' a person internally? Any experience with this?
Hmmm... Aluminum Sulfate is used as a preservative in the pickling process so I don't think a small amount being ingested would cause any damage. Remember, this process of preserving hides is actually PICKLING not tanning. It is simple and works for preserving the hide for hanging on a wall. I have no experience with eating alum just as it is though. I don't recommend it.
Personally, I would wash/degrease firstly by itself, providing your skins are salted after skinning. I would degrease, then make my pickle by itself.you didnt mention temperature of pickle...temp. is very important
Temp is important you are right. I've learned much since I recorded this. Follow my link for the active channel if you want. I'd like to talk fur handling some time.
I'm afraid that is above my head. It works the way I videoed. I'm not an expert though. There are MUCH better methods. This is just what I knew at the time. Thanks for the comment. Hope you are well.

Sorry for this generic message. Randall Rydes is my active channel ruclips.net/video/OhC8z4bsk3Q/видео.html
It's just called washing soda. It's NOT borax. It's in the laundry isle. It is usually added to detergent.
water + salt + alum = a full bucket
How many ph should it be?

@@PennsyltuckyTrapper thanks for your reply. I'll continue to research as there's definitely something in it.. Cheers
Alum can be bought at a grocery store
They use it to clean our drinking water and it isn't good.
