My wheelhouse was working on indoor rinks. I believe I could help you simplify your ice maintenance while giving you more consistent conditions if your interested. I don’t play hockey but do live in an area that gets 400+ inches of snow a year so I do other ice/snow sports like skiing but these vids never disappoint.

The yearly rink video is my favorite one on your channel... We have a big backyard (not Utah big, but big enough) and I'm now working on getting the wife on board with making one of the Nice Rinks in our backyard for our 3 boys. Looks like an insane amount of work, but it also looks methodical and therapeutic like cutting the grass.

That's awesome you are getting the wife on board. -- Honestly, I think it is such great thing to do to create memories for the family and kids that they'll never forget. I still have a ton of memories skating on the rink my Dad built us 3 boys. ( I am the middle of 3 ). - And now we are doing the same for our family. Your 3 boys will love it, get out a lot of energy, and I'm sure sleep better haha. Plus you can always tell what kids have a rink as their skills increase exponentially. All things your wife will be excited about. It is a lot of work, although if you don't have as much wind and snow as we do up in the foothills, things will be a little better. All sizes of rinks are great -- I have quite a few friends with rinks around 25x40 / 30x50 etc and they get lots of use. -- Resurfacing late at night is very therapeutic. -- If I can help in convincing any more just let me know. As long as the weather cooperates so you get a good season, it is totally worth it. Cheers

I love seeing how beautiful you made this, and all the fun you can have with an ice rink in your own yard! We made a rink in our front yard each winter in Michigan. Played lots of rough hockey games there! My dad would first pack the snow in a large approx 40 X 90' area with the family station wagon. Then, my brother and I would flood the rink, each night adding another layer. It was bumpy at first, but would be smooth after about two weeks. We used natural snowbanks for the perimeter walls. I'd love to share a picture from 1978, but you'll have to use your imagination.
The setup and maintanence is something a lot of people wouldn't reaize how hard that really is physically. In the cold too add that onto clearing the snow on your driveway and doorstep. Fun to watch, you are a hard worker.
Where I grew up, we had 4 outdoor rinks. Elementary school, college & recreational area. All within an 8 block radius. The college had 2. One for hockey & skating & the other strictly for broomball use, no skates. Thanks for the memories.

I always enjoy the rink videos - besides the technical aspects - I love to see how much fun you have doing it. However, I think the best part is watching the real sense of community that seems to be a big part of the experience.
I love this video. My dad always built me a rink in our backyard plus the one at my school. I learned to skate while he flooded the rink and fixed the ice. Those are some of my happiest memories as a kid.
I have a pond that I use for skating in the winter - some years its great, some years not. But this guy puts in more work in 1 day than I've put in over 7 years with my pond.
Really amazing ODR! I would be honored to get to play on something that nice, your friends and family are very lucky! Whats stopping the lights from heating up enough to start melting the ice from below when the light is left on for a longer play session? Getting that clear freeze is probably the only thing that could have made this better, keep up the great work!
I put up an ODR every year, this year was by far one of the worst because of the warm weather and then the snow right after, still had fun. I have the EZ ice system which is nice because no stakes which is perfect as my rink sits on both grass and asphalt. Love the Videos, they give me inspo to put my rink up every year.
Hey man! I hear you about all the warm and then cold weather. Such a crazy season. We luck out since our elevations is a mile high, but still had the darn fluctuations. I've heard great things about the EZ rinks as well! -- and it sounds like a perfect situation for your rink. Because we have the 4 foot boards and get so much wind, I'd be toast without stakes, but would love to go stake free if I could! I did get some skating in and there was enough snow to build our annual toboggan run. We launch from a picnic table off our deck (and put plywood to protect the stairs) and then have it weave in the backyard as it goes downhill.
holy smokes is that alot of work, but it looks amazing, im sure you are the talk of the town, and that is great for the kids to be able to play on as well

Sooooo cool wish we had those types of ice rings when I was young but hey we still had fun I remember when I was a 10 years old my friends and I made a rink after we heard that we were going to have rain so we cleaned a huge rink two days after we had natural ice we had no boards but we played for 2 months

We've been to Norway as my family originally came over from the Lillehammer area, but need to get to Sweden as well. It was a really good mix of snacks Martin sent. My wife said those Swedes really know how to make a good chocolate bar, and said they are better than anything we have in the States :) My hockey rink videos are most viewed by folks in the USA, followed by Canada, then Sweden! Oh it’s definitely my pleasure to enjoy your builds and videos. Welcome to Sweden when you get a chance and make sure you eat some chocolate bars while you’re here hehe! We do know how to make good candy. I have a brother living in Seattle so my visits to him have been many through the years, I always bring lots of candy and potato chips with me..more so than clothes and personal stuff haha! I’m not a player or rink builder myself I just enjoy people doing stuff with their hands, crafting and building. Keep it up and hope the knee is healing well! Take care of yourself and the family.
My rink is already open for the season a week before Thanksgiving! I can’t believe it. I was watching your video again to see if you in fact trimmed the liner once the ice was playable. I’ll do that today.
Thats awesome you are up already! We are filling as we speak. Yep, I trimmed basically an inch or 2 above ice level. Looks so much better than that the plastic liner draped over :) I still find that the shovel gets caught on it a bit, but worth it! Hope the rink is going great thus far! Do you do the tall boy boards too?

Thanks for the ideas! I like the idea of painting lines as well for a professional look during the day. My hesitation is the color of the line absorbing sunlight and causing melting where the lines are. ( if you leave a puck, goal, or even a leaf gets on it will absorb energy from the sun and melt the area quickly. Do you know how the paint does outdoors? If it would work well I'd love to try it. And if anyone is reading this discussion and has tried the ice paint outdoors I'd love to hear about your experience with it. Thanks guys!
I see Zamboni makes a Model 100 that can be towed by any garden tractor. Seems to cost around $10k. Not cheap, but with all that you put into building the rink, it might be a good addition.
Hey just out of curiosity, since you put the rink pretty much in the same spot every year now... why dont you just flat concrete that particular area for a much more conducive flat surface for ice? Then in Summer you have a slab of concrete for other activities.
I do not watch hockey nor know do I even know the rules, I can skate and can definitely maneuver and control a puck.., .I think this is amazing..ur kids must be impressed.. Bro , I'm smiling just watching this and picturing myself becoming the next Wayne Gretzky
Thanks so much! Potentially boards all around, more accessories ( stick holders etc ) - small bleacher setup -- always open to ideas! I tried to do a giant outdoor projection screen this season but unfortunately projectors don't do well in cold weather. If ya have any ideas for upgrades let me know!
I would have just done like a hockey rink pool. Like in the summer before it freezes it's a pool. And then you drain it before winter and then fill it with less water.
Hey Joe! I do get a new liner each year. Unfortunately, even if it is not trimmed, it’s near impossible to salvage, especially with this size. One small tear or hole ( which is bound to happen from skates, pucks, etc - even with kick plates) will create a huge headache and pain in the but. I have salvaged to do a smaller rink at a friends and that was possible. But I would say every experienced rink builder I have talked to buys a new one each season. I do put mine on fb marketplace after the season and usually a farmer will pick it up and use it to cover their hay. Cheers!
If you store your boards outside anyways then why not just leave them up year round? I'm thinking of building a smaller rink, but putting those boards up every year seems very time consuming.
Hey! The biggest reason is wind where we live in the foothills right up near the mountains. We get 70mph winds from time to time and even with them all staked down, they can become sails. Once the weight of the water / ice is in they are rock solid, but honestly the wind here is the biggest reason. ( as you mentioned, we do store them outside so keeping them up would be easier ). For most people this wouldn't be an issue, it is just where our rink is situated. Mowing / trimming all the grass around the supports and brackets would be a pain, but doable. We actually are doing a different sized rink this season. It took us about 3 hours to put up all the boards and stakes so not too bad. Doing a smaller one would definitely be quite a bit faster. You can see how the setup looks in your backyard though and make your call! Looking forward to you doing a rink!
I still haven't tried curling but seriously need to. -- so doing paint / marks in outdoor ice can have issues with the painted areas collecting sunlight and then melting in those areas. But if anyone has any advice on doing painted lines in outdoor ice i'd love to hear. --- Dan, curling would be super fun to add at some point. I will have to look into doing so! Cheers

Hey! Thanks for your patience and for taking the time to watch the rink builds each year. I've never been to Sweden but would like to visit someday. We've been to Norway as my family originally came over from the Lillehammer area, but need to get to Sweden as well. It was a really good mix of snacks Martin sent. My wife said those Swedes really know how to make a good chocolate bar, and said they are better than anything we have in the States :) My hockey rink videos are most viewed by folks in the USA, followed by Canada, then Sweden! We do know how to make good candy. I have a brother living in Seattle so my visits to him have been many through the years, I always bring lots of candy and potato chips with me..more so than clothes and personal stuff haha!

My rink is already open for the season a week before Thanksgiving! I can’t believe it. I was watching your video again to see if you in fact trimmed the liner once the ice was playable. I’ll do that today.
Thats awesome you are up already! We are filling as we speak. Yep, I trimmed basically an inch or 2 above ice level. Looks so much better than that the plastic liner draped over :) I still find that the shovel gets caught on it a bit, but worth it! Hope the rink is going great thus far! Do you do the tall boy boards too?

Next year you should do a goal line LED and also add lines to the liner and make it look more professional. Great Rink! :)
Thanks for the ideas! I like the idea of painting lines as well for a professional look during the day. My hesitation is the color of the line absorbing sunlight and causing melting where the lines are. ( if you leave a puck, goal, or even a leaf gets on it will absorb energy from the sun and melt the area quickly. Do you know how the paint does outdoors? If it would work well I'd love to try it. And if anyone is reading this discussion and has tried the ice paint outdoors I'd love to hear about your experience with it. Thanks guys!

I see Zamboni makes a Model 100 that can be towed by any garden tractor. Seems to cost around $10k. Not cheap, but with all that you put into building the rink, it might be a good addition.

Hey just out of curiosity, since you put the rink pretty much in the same spot every year now... why dont you just flat concrete that particular area for a much more conducive flat surface for ice? Then in Summer you have a slab of concrete for other activities.

What upgrades do you think you will make next year
Thanks so much! Potentially boards all around, more accessories ( stick holders etc ) - small bleacher setup -- always open to ideas! I tried to do a giant outdoor projection screen this season but unfortunately projectors don't do well in cold weather. If ya have any ideas for upgrades let me know!

I would have just done like a hockey rink pool. Like in the summer before it freezes it's a pool. And then you drain it before winter and then fill it with less water.
i'm assuming you buy a new liner every season since you trimmed it?
Hey Joe! I do get a new liner each year. Unfortunately, even if it is not trimmed, it’s near impossible to salvage, especially with this size. One small tear or hole ( which is bound to happen from skates, pucks, etc - even with kick plates) will create a huge headache and pain in the but. I have salvaged to do a smaller rink at a friends and that was possible. But I would say every experienced rink builder I have talked to buys a new one each season. I do put mine on fb marketplace after the season and usually a farmer will pick it up and use it to cover their hay. Cheers!

If you store your boards outside anyways then why not just leave them up year round? I'm thinking of building a smaller rink, but putting those boards up every year seems very time consuming.
Hey! The biggest reason is wind where we live in the foothills right up near the mountains. We get 70mph winds from time to time and even with them all staked down, they can become sails. Once the weight of the water / ice is in they are rock solid, but honestly the wind here is the biggest reason. ( as you mentioned, we do store them outside so keeping them up would be easier ). For most people this wouldn't be an issue, it is just where our rink is situated. Mowing / trimming all the grass around the supports and brackets would be a pain, but doable. We actually are doing a different sized rink this season. It took us about 3 hours to put up all the boards and stakes so not too bad. Doing a smaller one would definitely be quite a bit faster. You can see how the setup looks in your backyard though and make your call! Looking forward to you doing a rink!
Pete - Thoughts on adding curling marks on the rink this year?
I still haven't tried curling but seriously need to. -- so doing paint / marks in outdoor ice can have issues with the painted areas collecting sunlight and then melting in those areas. But if anyone has any advice on doing painted lines in outdoor ice i'd love to hear. --- Dan, curling would be super fun to add at some point. I will have to look into doing so! Cheers
