good thing to know, normally when someone has to exchange a controller, they don't wear 2 spare battery clips. in fact, 1 battery is sufficient to get the pump running. After the controller is exchanged(with 1 battery attached), you can attach the second battery clip to the new controller.
This will save you a bit of time.
I am living with a heartmate 3 by the way :-)
    Kind regards,
    Christiaan.

I think there are sufficient built in safety features, alarms etc, but actually running it off only 1 battery ??? How on earth do you know this ?
I am also living with a Heartmate III.

What is the exact size of the batteries and the size of the controller please

About the controller I have no idea. One battery without the case/connector is 160mm * 75mm * 26mm

How do you turn on the new controller?

The new controller should automatically wake from sleep mode when the external power source (batteries) get attached. These controllers are actually in sleep mode when not in use. That's why charging up their internal 11V battery periodically is safety critical. However: It should be noted that a System controller can run off of it's internal battery, however it can't start from it's internal battery. You must connect external power sources to get the controller (and the pump) started. By the way: The internal battery is a 12Wh 3 cell li-ion battery. The doctors say it can provide emergency power for ~15 minutes. I disagree, because the pump's average consumption is 5-6W (depending on flow rate). Sooooo I guess 15 minutes is told to the patient to have the urge to solve the external battery problem immediately?
As far as I remember you will hear a lot of beeping while exchanging controllers: the old one will beep because the driveline is disconnected, and the new one will beep because the driveline is not yet connected (and the calculated flow value is low).
