*grabbing popcorn and getting ready to learn from the mixing god*
Man I wish there were extensive videos all the time. I literally make coffee and chill. And follow along in my daw. We need more!
If it wasn't for the heavy pounding metal kicks we hear throughout, this could've been a (get)Good ASMR video.
Nolly's starts a premium AMSR snapchat but it's just him talking about plugins
he should do an account for that one controversial site where he strip down his mixes track by track and how he go on mixing them with techniques he recently utilized
@@Ch1psahoy would pay

GGD shoving some knowledge in our faces again and I couldn‘t be happier!
Always something interesting to learn from Nolly, this is incredible!
Cheched out the song: damn that kick is one of the best I've ever heard!
I have no idea whatever hes talking about nor do i play drums but i always watch everytime GGD uploads a video with nolly
Holy...wow. I've learned a ridiculous amount from you through all the videos you've put out (and I can't possibly thank you enough for all you do!) but this one was somewhat revolutionary. I started learning production and sound engineering only about 2 months ago and have already produced songs light years beyond what my old bands paid way too much for back in the day. I dunno where I'd be without your instruction though
Nolly you are absolutely insane, and I love it
Well damn, I'm gonna try this on Toms as well.
Yeah, tom top and tom bottom mics
Into nothing entered my reference mixes the first time a heard, awesome mix Nolly!
Fun fact: if you have a look at how the real kick and the kick sample are printed in EZDrummer 2's Metal Heads addon (the Thomas Haake kit), they are actually out of phase as well. Makes for an ultra scooped and ultra clicky kick which I personally never liked but which likely works just well with Meshuggah's sound with those huge guitars and the almost subsonic bass.
Cool trick, thanks for sharing man !
First saw Kurt Ballou doing this technique on Creative Live back in the day. Genius.
Nolly is a real life wizard. 🧙♂️
Tried this on accident once. Just got a good ready sounding kick with mics polarity reverted. Now after watching this I feel like I have to do it again on purpose 😁
i presume that the next library will add this feature
amazing tip tho Nolls
There's a really cool trick with toms that works using phase cancellation while combining a tom with a nice attack and another with solid resonance and body.
Insane.. Thanks for sharing this interesting technique!
i printed all my preferred secondary kick samples as one shots and time aligned them. and then scooted things around until they all sounded good, either all together or in pairs. k10, black kick, k2, that sort of thing. and dropped them into superior drummer 3. they all trigger and all come up on separate faders and i can just turn them all up and down to taste. what was interesting is how time aligning them by eye didn't sound the best. i absolutely had to scoot them around little by little until they sounded right.
gonna definitely give this a try
If anyone is like me and just assumed they were subscribed, check again. Nolly and the team deserve that sub!
I usually have an ink pen and a vape pen handy for videos like thissss

NICE
I would love it if Nolly would make simple NKIs with a very basic channel mixer for these samples or provide them as a link with the video
Fantastic!
Hi Nolly, have you ever tried mixing with allpass filters? For me its a real game changer when it comes to phase alignment and the creative use of phasing. Often times when you get the lows in phase the highs or mids tend to get out of phase due to the non linear nature and dispersion over the frequency spectrum. For example, with an allpass filter you can affect the polarity of the highs only. I'm sure you'll like it! :)
Our lord and saviour coming in clutch!
should make a video on how to make decent recording patches for your DSP plugin

After about two years of hobby mixing (all digital and programmed) I still have no idea what "phase" is. Whenever I watch videos like these I can hear the difference, but I have no clue what phase actually is. What does it mean when microphones or tracks are in and out of phase? What's actually happening when it is in phase or when it's out of phase? It seems like I'm the only person that doesn't know this and it's always getting brought up but it's common knowledge or something? Someone please help, I'm sick of being confused.
Phase is the timing of all the hits and polarity is which direction the transients are facing- wether the waveforms go up or down. As you can see, Nolly is using 3 microphones for one drum. Normally, The 3 transients should all start at the exact same time and being facing up and down at the same times to be “in phase”. This tutorial is pretty advanced and he is canceling certain frequencies by reversing the phase on a mid range microphone
OOOOOH. So really it just means the mics being "in time" or "in sync" with one another. Dude, thank you so much. You have summed up hours of frustration and (probably) hundreds of failed Google searches within seconds. Thank you so much.
GhettoTorture Exactly. But you want the polarity (direction of the waveform) to match too or else it will cancel out. Happy to help!

Ok, but what's that thumbnail?
YEEESSS NOLLY FROM VSAUCE FEED ME KNOWLEDGE OM NOM NOM NOM
Too flubby for me, the attack was the only good part. But hey, the process you just taught opens pathways of creativity, that is far more important than this kick sound.
