I wanted to say thank you. I bought a GoPro Max for the specific purpose of doing 360 content. I thought I had done enough research but what none of the tutorials mentioned is that GoPro editing tools don't exist for Windows... I just needed the simplest one, cut here, add these clips together and end here. I searched and found your video. So kudos to you for a great tutorial and to Black Magic for such a powerful tool and FREE!

While this is a very good starting point for those who starts, that this is not really 360 workflow.
You basically treat 360 video as regular video, which I agree, fine for a start. However, most of the tools will just fall apart.
As an example. Simple Transforms will cause insane artifacts and Simple Blur will cause seams at the back, where your left and right edges should come together. Also, up and down poles will not be blurred properly due to non-uniform pixel density in those regions.
Unfortunately, the only way around it is ether expensive Plugins or one have to learn nasty tricks in Fusion. Which is also not really friendly for beginners.
You should use Premiere if you want to do anything other than edit and export the footage.. this workflow works fine, but it’s the $0 option and therefore will come with limitations.
No, no, man. What I like about your video is that it keeps new people away from Premiere. Resolve is a greate product which deserve much more credit then it has in public right now. And you are doing good job helping people to discover it.In my oppinion, one should stay away from Premiere this days. Premiere have passed saturation point somewhere around version 6.5 about 15 or 17 years ago, but even back then it was a horrible desaster, and it doesn't get any better since then.You can do some tricks even in free version of DR15, now Fusion is includded, so you can make a simple script where 360 Video is mapped on a sphere and then rendered back with spherical camera. This way you can transform camera, use trackers and other stuff tottaly for FREE. Like I said, this could scarry away some people, but it's 100% legit.

I was looking for a way to control the camera angles in the 360 and render a flat version of the footage, with only specific angles. I don't think that Resolve can do that. I would use VLC to "walk through" the 360 footage and move the camera angle while playing, while recording my screen. Is there a better way? :)

Ben - Thanks for all the great videos! I'm new to 360 and Resolve. I'm using Insta360 Studio 2019 and Resolve 16. I've followed your video instructions and when I export a Quicktime video from Resolve at the 360 settings you recommend, Insta360 Studio will not recognize it. When I export as an MP4, Studio does recognize it and plays it as 360. However, when I then try to upload that to RUclips, the metadata appears to be missing and it only plays equirectangular, not as a 360 video. When I use Spatial Metadata Injector on that file and upload again, then it displays on YT as 360. I notice in your video that you did not have the Injector step. Am I doing something wrong with the Resolve settings that causes the metadata to be lost? I don't quite understand why Studio can play the uninfected file, but YT can't. Any guidance?
That’s a good workflow- whenever the metadata is missing you can reinject it easily using the software you mentioned

How did you import the 360 footage? Did you export it out of 360 studio first? 1 have 150 clips. I'm trying to export them out of 360 studio but my c drive keeps filling up even though my exports are on another drive. Any suggestions?

It didn't export as a 360 video for me.
One extra step that was needed was to use the Spatial Media Metadata Injector to put the data needed into the MP4 video to make it 360 compatible.

FYI the UHD resolution cap is a limitation of the free version. The paid Studio version goes to 8K and beyond.

You can use Davinci Resolve as reframer too. You need a free plugin "Reframe360"
thats discontinued and doesn't work on Resolve for macOS but many on Windows do have good success with it

1) is it possible to re-orient the 360° video?. For instance, if the input .insv looks like facing south walking backward (before mouse drag to look around), can you export it into a .mp4 looking like facing north walking forward?
2) sometimes is hard to add a transition beetwen 2 clips. The active timeline, has something to do with this?. If I use the blade tu cut a clip, transitions can be added with no problem. Please, Why.

Just got a Insta360 One X about 3 weeks ago and absolutely LOVE IT! I have filmed hours of video and now come the problem. How the Heck to edit all these videos, pull parts of some video and combine with others. I have DaVinci Resolve 15 BUT it still does not support the 5.7K which is what I filmed ALL my video in. I have a PC, what somewhere do I need to study and purchase in order to be able to make all this video actually usable? Love your channel, its what got me back into 360. I was into 360 virtual tours filming real estate back at the very being in the very early 2000's.

Had to call back and say a super big thank you. Just done my first 360 Video. It worked easy enough. I have never used Final cut or PR was a newbie to this video editing. It is amazing what you can do to using this software for FREE ! Personal think if your spent 10 to 15 hours you could be making good 360 video. When uploading to RUclips do you still need to use the Spatial Media Metadata Injector to add the 360 metadata to the 360 clip?
I’m also a fan of Resolve. It’s popular with some of the video bloggers I follow, and very affordable for those who want the upgraded version. I’m still learning to use it, and knowing i can work on my Insta360 videos is a huge plus. I struggle to get good 4k output for RUclips uploading with the Insta360 Studio software, so this will be big for me. I also do not care for iMovie, it’s just too complex for my tiny brain (or tiny planet :D). Thanks for sharing the basic tutorial, this will help get me started with 360 video and maybe help me learn 2D as well within Resolve!

I edit the clips in GoPro Fusion studio 1.3 and render it as 4K mp4 for RUclips, the clips play fine when uploaded. As soon as I follow the steps as shown, combine them and then render it into 1 video, it plays flat when uploaded to RUclips.
Pro tip: Shift-Z to size the timeline to the view.

I found out how to re-orient the 360° video in DaVinci Resolve (as in, if the center of the original video was facing south, rotate the video 180° to make it face north). First, add the same 360° video clip to Track 1 and Track 2 at the same "in" point. Then move the Transform > Position X of the Track 1 clip half the width and move the Track 2 clip half the width the other way. E.g., if the video is 2880x1440, Track 1 Position X = 1440, Track 2 Position X = -1440.
Very good advice. Thank you. My video is 3840 x 1920 and I found that for some reason I had to use X1=1940 and X2=-1940 to close the gap in the center.

Hi Ben, I followed everything you showed on DR17. But after uploading to YT, the 360 is still a flat video. I am using a clip from Insta360 One X2, exported by Insta360 Studio as MP4. Would appreciate if you could help.
I have the studio version since it came with my cameras but I do recommend it for 360 footage. I'm using Resolve + Boris VR Units to edit my 5.2K GoPro Fusion clips. I've worked with Insta 360s and Theta before and the performance is really good with this high of a resolution. Keep in mind I'm using two GPUs which is a feature of the pro version.

Hi Ben. Great video. I have a question. I need to just re-orient my 360 videos to watched them more easily in my VR goggles. I have the free version of Davinci Resolve. I see Ignite Express is not available any longer (only the paid version). I installed KartaVR but when I apply to re-orientation, it keeps only the 2D part of the footage which is shown on the display. Is there a way around to simply re-orient the footage without re-framing or loosing the remainder of the original footage in each frame? Thanks again for all your help

Hello Ben, I thought you had provided a really good solution for 360 video editing with this software. However, even though I have a fairly new Apple Mac this program completely freezes everything if I do try to run any of the program at the same time.
I’ve never used Adobe premiere or any other software because they are far too complicated, also because it cost money I cannot afford.
I found I couldn’t Get past go with this software because when I uploaded the media it did not give me a preview window like you showed on your video. It only gave me a single Equirectangular window.
I find all these 360 editing programs incredibly frustrating because they are so difficult to even learn the basics, and the processor cannot cope with them
Hi Stephen, it will probably be something really simple that you’ve missed. I’d definitely suggest checking out more RUclips tutorials on the software because if you want a professional video editor completely for free, this is the one. It’s worth sticking around and learning. Good luck!
Update. I’ve tried Davinci again and this it totally froze everything and I had to cut the power to my Mac. This program sucks BIG TIME and the internet is full of the same stories.

Hi and thanks for this tutorial. I am not familiar with DavinciResolve but of course I've heard of it. QUESTION: In your tutorial you are obviously using ."mp4 files" to import in Resolve. I was hoping that with the software I'd be able to import 360 footage without needing any extra software or plugins. I am mainly using a windows 10 computer. Would like to avoid to use my macbook since it seems to be some of a challenge to get my mac footage back on a windows formated hard drive.

Same here. The import dialog lets me select .insv files, but they never show up in the project.
You need to stitch your files first.. this is not a stitching software. Stitch then import the MP4 files 👍

Oh man, you're the best! I just tried it out. I worked with Cyberlink before. First Action Director and then I bought Power Director. But although it has a 360 preview,
the low res made me crazy.
I recently built a new PC with a Ryzen 1700 and 1060 6gb and it was still as slow as my 8 year old PC. What a waste of money, for the software, but not for the PC.
DaVinci runs like hell! I can do what I want with it. It reminds me on Fireworks which has been my favorite freeware for a long time, but it's not flexible enough in
regarding of 360 editing with only Full HD output.

I shoot my video with a Ricoh Theta V hanging from the roof of the helicopter. So all my raw footage is initially upside down. I generally re-encode my clips with a flip using ffmpeg, but this step is a pain. Does Resolve allow flipping a clip easily?

Actually have Premier Pro but I'm still running into an interesting problem which is not fixed by the da Vinci software. In addition to photography my hobby also includes animation of both the two and the 3-D variety using the reallusion products. What I want to be able to do is generate a composite that has the output of my 3-D animations composited into my 360 video using keying. I am able to do this in the two-dimensional world. What I do is set the background of the reallusion products to a green that I can then color key out with Premier Pro or aftereffects. It would be really neat to be able to use the same technique for 360 videos. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You are doing a fantastic job and I have learned a lot from watching your videos.
Thanks Joseph- this is far beyond my area of expertise and while Davinci does offer green screen keying, it’s not yet 360 native so I’d stick with Premiere/After effects
Actually that is quite possible in Davinci Resolve. The Fusion tab is a powerhouse rivalling After Effects. There is a whole suite of 3D tools in there, and it is entirely possible to project your 360, composite 3D material in it and render this out in 2:1 format as 360 video. Search for Fusion tutorials. Fusion was a standalone program that has now been brought into Resolve. This is something I'm studying on at the time, it's not easy stuff but if you know how, it will become so.

Hi Ben thanks for this, glad someone else is using resolve. It would be helpful going through the reframing plugin from borisx because the go pro one doesn't support ofx like resolve. p.s. your videos convinced me to get the insta360, hopefully it arrives soon.

I just noticed that you state that the free software only supports 4K. I'm looking at a clip right now from my Insta360 One R and its 5760x2880. Does that mean that I can't use it with my Insta360 One R?
I bought a gear 360 4k but their app will not work on my Note5 so after watching your vid I loaded Davinci . Now, when I record with the gear360 I get 2 fisheyes and was wondering how to make it a 360 so viewers can turn the vid around in 360 ? Can you help with this question?
Stitching is a different part of the workflow.. you need to stitch in the mobile app before you bring footage into Davinci.

This isn’t a software for changing angles.. it’s only for video editing. If you want to reframe, use Insta360 Studio
