    What’s your weight / height. I paddle a medium Rewind!

      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, I think the medium would be the choice for me too, realistically. I'm 64kgs soaking wet and about 5'9", so a bit awkward sized!

      @@MatthewBrookKayaking Would be an interesting comparison to try a medium on the same river and see if speed and spicy is any different for you in a medium. I’m 5ft 8 and approx 74kg

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking
      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, I agree. I'd love to hop in a medium and see how it stacks up. I think it would still be a little sluggish compared to the Ripper, purely because of length and width, but I imagine it would be a much closer comparison.

      Because I prefer it, ultimately. I like the extra grip you get from the pre-bend on the blades.

    Sorry to hear about your boat. If thats the end for it youll have to have it bronzed or something.

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking
      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад +1

      These things happen. It's only gear, at the end of the day! And it has served very very admirably.
      No worries. I've only spent a little time in the 2, but wasn't convinced by it. Would need to give it a lot more time before making a real judgment though.

    • @simonwyndham
      @simonwyndham 9 месяцев назад +1

      @wBrookKayaking Get the Ripper 2 on a nice wave. It'll convince you. I used to have a Ripper 1, but never fully got on with it. It was fast, but also incredibly unforgiving. I find the Ripper 2 slower, but way better at boofing, way better at tailies, and it really surfs.

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking
      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад

      Decent surf is the only place I've tried the 2. Agreed, it surfs well - in fact I think you're analysis is overall completely accurate - but I disagree that it's wholly positive. I used a large Ripper 2 (despite being more suited to a small or medium) and was still able to stern stall on flatwater. That doesn't bode well to me for the creek-capability of the smaller sizes, regardless of how much rocker they have!

    • @simonwyndham
      @simonwyndham 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@MatthewBrookKayaking Yeah, I can see that. They are easy to tailie. Though there are quite a few people using them in the UK as a boat for creeking, and Bren takes his on some ridiculous huge stuff without getting back looped all the time. In fact I'm seeing a few people taking the Firecracker on steeps in the UK, and that's even more tail happy than the R2. I guess the main question is, why have a true half slice at all if getting it vertical isn't the aim of the game? I know there's a push for boats that can stern dip rather than all out tailie, but I think it just makes the case for having a half slice for fun runs and an all out creek boat (even a "stern dip" model like the Ninja) for creeking.

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking
      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад +1

      Fair enough. I personally think that the boat requiring more effort to tailie isn't a negative; just an incentive to practise more! My thoughts would be: if you want to really play, get in a full-slice. For me, a half-slice must be capable on a creek; the advantage of the low-volume stern is predominantly in manoeuvrability, play is a bonus.

    Thanks for including the prayer. Jesus is surprisingly unpopular amongst paddlers here in northeast GA. Sad situation

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking

      As I've said, I'm just on a long journey of trying to authentically share how I interact with the river as a follower of Jesus. Continuing to pray for boldness. Sad as it may be, that's the reality of the western world; I consider kayaking my mission field, so the aim is to make the name of Jesus known and acknowledge Him in front of a watching world. Press on, brother.

      I'm in Northwest georgia, I wouldn't say definitely not talked about much. Then again I don't paddle with a bunch of other people.
      Seems most people have to find their own way to Jesus in today's time. One thing I have learned. Even as a lifetime believer and person who accepted Jesus very young. It's impossible to truly grasp how real Angels, Demons and Jesus Christ are until you experience one or all of them.
      Unfortunately, many have been led astray and deceived by the enemy.

    So the Ripper 1 was junk, but everyone seems to like the Ripper 2. What makes the Ripper 2 so much better than the original version?

    • @MatthewBrookKayaking
      @MatthewBrookKayaking  9 месяцев назад +1

      Who says the Ripper 1 was so bad? I'm comparing to the Ripper 1 here, which to my mind is an excellent boat. By contrast, the (in fairness, limited) experience I've had of the 2 has not been favourable. Not enough length/ability to carry momentum and far too tail-happy. Plus I'm not a huge fan of this modern 'just give it more rocker' attitude that seems to be prevalent in newer designs like the 2: sure, it enables people to quickly jump up the grades, but it doesn't necessarily give them the skill or understanding required.

    • @powskier
      @powskier 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@MatthewBrookKayakingMaybe saying the Ripper 1 was junk is a big stretch. They did some things right. But I have never met anyone in my area that still paddles a R1 or that doesn't like the R2 better. I paddle an Antix 2 when I want a half slice. But I'm considering upgrading to a firecracker. But all those boats are a compromise. I'm looking forward to Pyranha's new real kayak coming out: the ReactR. Are you getting one? They should be out in the UK in a couple of weeks. Who knows how long before the US gets in. Would appreciate if you tested one .
