Great clip showing the Nova's surfing capability!.. Coming from using Surf boats for the past 7 years or so now, I bought a Nova for those rough days where I could express some playboaty moves from the early years!..I really wanted a Wavesport XXX of which are now impossible to find, after owning a few back in the day? The Nova fills that void..More comfortable than the XXX with the performance and forgiveness to match that a modern boat has to offer..so much more to learn from it..and it keeps giving..Cheers Matthew, great clips!

This looks like great fun! What would you say are the first 3 things someone new to flatwater freestyle should master? I've been trying lean cleans, but I'm looking to progress 💪 Flat water sessions are feeling tricky in this cold 😅
Thanks Jamie. Great question. I'd say lean cleans and edge control drills combined with blade pressure drills. None of those are "moves" in themselves, but they underpin all the skills in freestyle.

I would watch slalom content. Particularly if you started talking about putting the boat on a carve and carrying momentum into, and most specifically, out of eddies. I don't paddle anymore but often start to think about cross current diagonal speed and regret not understanding about this in the 1980s!

@@MatthewBrookKayaking its what I do at the end of our winter pool sessions. a couple pool laps cross bow both sides always seems to finish off any energy I had left.

That is glorious, it's got a Winchester vibe? I love these secret wave spots....you posted an advert for your surfing clinic a few months ago which featured a wave. Would love to know where that was too🤩.
Same wave...not in Winchester though... This is not far from Downton on the River Avon.
Fill it up and throw. Fantastic. Something I've never been shown or thought about doing.
It's a fairly situational one - usually you don't have time for it - but very useful in certain circumstances.

JI was taught that by just by rotating your core like automatically puts it on edge, not much granted but there is some edge and by rotating your core means you can stay on edge far longer. I only paddle at LV (Legacy) and I still do not have the bottle to get stuck in a hole, perhaps when it get warmer and i have at least an 80% roll, great video, thanks :)
Yes, I think there's truth in that. It generates the same (or a comparable) core tension that we are aiming for when edging the boat. Give it time and keep trying! You'll get there!

Trent lock is my “local”. Super frustrated to be missing it due to injury this year (tennis elbow). Anyway, love the content, it’s a super useful reference guide as I spend my time coaching rather than paddling. Keep up the great work :)

What a beautiful wave i wish I could have near my home one like this, I just got excited that it recently got gifted with a tiny wave existing because of a treestamp that got washed ito the middle of the river next to my village but it is just barely one boat lengt wide and realy short and steep aswell.
Yeah, it's a beauty! But I'm a big believer that no wave is too small to enjoy! Glad you have something to play with close to home.

Maybe compare it to the 20 meter syntechline from hf. It is 6mm thick.

Delirious vs Nova/Supernova opinion 🤔
Delirious, I would say, is unequivocally one of the best playboat designs ever (in its era). The Nova is nowhere the slicing machine that the Delirious was, but in terms of comfort and ability to surf, it's lightyears ahead.
Blunts in slicey boats just look better
Learned these in a Corsica S in 1994 😂 super fun in slicey boats, but waaaaay poppier in big boats. Very useful for maintaining/regaining control when doing unintendos while getting a kicking in a creek boat
Absolutely. Such a useful skill to have!
My goal this winter is to regain some lost confidence after an injury. anything more than class 3 my paddling becomes twitchy and rushed. I used to be really comfortable and smooth on class 4. Maybe I need to regain lost strength, or maybe its more mental. I'm not sure but I'm keen to stop paddling like a beater!!

Amazing skills. Wish I would be at your level. If you don't mind sharing, what's your weight? I'm considering getting a Nova myself and I'm 74 kg. Not sure whether Nova or Supernova would fit me better.
Thanks Jonas! It's only a matter of consistent practice over time. You can do it! As for my weight, I'm about 65kg. I don't know the Nova's weight range off by heart, but I imagine you'd probably comfortably fit in either - just a question of what you want from the boat. If you want it to surf capably, I'd suggest the bigger size - if you're doing stuff on flat, the smaller one might be easier to work with.

Maybe you don’t need an over thruster , that boat floats you surprisingly high
It sits high, but I think the thruster would be handy for trying loops. There just isn't much rejection without one.

@@williambrazil3760 thanks. That's a really interesting concept and suggestion. In many ways, I think that would be a very subjective thing, so quite tricky to do a video on. But I'll have a ponder - it's a cool idea.

I got two questions. Have you used an Overthruster on that boat and what about a crossbow stern pirouette? Is that even possible?

Thanks Mantorak! I've never used an overthruster with the Nova, though not by any deliberate choice. For moves like this, it would definitely lend some extra oomph! As to cross-stern initiations, it's a bit of a misnomer since you don't actually reach fully across the stern, but I've done a video about them in the past. I guess in theory a proper cross-stern stroke would be possible, but I don't the biomechanics of sitting would make it a) easy or b) effective.

Do you use a shorter paddle length for play vs Creeking? If so how much shorter?
Usually yes, but not here, due to lots of concrete and metal! Normally I use a 197cm for creeking, but drop to my 194cm wooden paddle for playboating.
