Lifelong baseball fan and Jomboy you truly are a master of sports breakdowns and I hope you only keep getting better. Bravo, sir. Thank you.
Love the use of baseball analogies. I don't know if you've seen any One Day International or Test matches (or highlights of) but the standard is much better. For context Boult, who slogged the winning runs, is a bowler (pitcher) in the New Zealand national team

As an Englishman living abroad who you’ve got into baseball and loved cricket before, please please please keep up the cricket content
I'm a Canadian who loved baseball and got into cricket 3 years ago. Jomboy making cricket content makes me feel like I'm dreaming

Born Canadian, raised in the US, spent many years working overseas. Please keep the cricket coming!
Finding how to get pro cricket matches? in Canada is difficult.
Don't stop making cricket breakdowns please! More! I don't normally miss baseball during the winter, but I definitely am now, love the cricket breakdowns!
"HE'S HAD SIX" yelled in a New Zealand accent is potentially the funniest part of this video for an American Audience. Missed an opportunity there Jomboy!

You should do a breakdown of that Aussie bowler getting 6 wickets in 4 overs in The Ashes! And talk about how INSANE that is, especially in test cricket (can last up to 5 days). Guy basically got 6/10 of the batting team out in 24 pitches, playing a format where a team can spend all day (typically more than 50 overs/300 pitches) batting before getting 10 outs.
Absolutely this needs to happen
not to mention it was his first EVER test match, at age 32, in front of his hometown crowd, in basically the most important game of cricket there is (boxing day ashes). absolutely insane
@@benschmen We have a better bowler coming back from injury, so Boland might only get 1 more game

@@jameswestover8403 now that the Ashes are won, they might continue to rest them to reduce risk of exacerbating injuries, maybe even give Starc a rest, and keep Boland in the side.
Jomboy has gone from underrated Yankees baseball youtuber crushing my Astros WS memories to an internationally recognized Cricket Ambassador. "LET'S GOOOOOOO!"
Also just a quick clarification Jimmy, but the batsman doesn't get credited a run when a wide is bowled. The team gets a run, and it's scored under the extras category.

To tell the truth I went from cricket to baseball,I felt baseball was tougher to understand even after watching it lots of time, only reason I understood it was because I was playing ootp21 which I had fun playing
For the americans watching, Trent Boult is in New Zealands international side, a truly great bowler who is basically an automatic lock for any game, any condition. He also bats 11, which is dead last, essentially the (International) team is saying "Boult is our worst batter" so for him to smack a six off his second ball under that much pressure was a magnificent sight.
How about Lockie Ferguson's batting ? He recently hit a six off the second last ball.
@@JonSnow-pi6jb Lockie's a bit better than Boulty but not by much, depending on the team selection he'll bat 9 or 10, but again, he's a world class bowler, he's not expected to make large runs.
Also, funnily enough Boult actually has the world record for most sixes hit as a no11 batsman in test cricket haha
Quite Arguably the best bowler in the world. I think personally think Bumrah is better but he is phenomenal too.
@@geographyhistorygeopolitic3851 shaheen shah afridi has to be up there ?
@@sp3ckedout224 Yeah, he's another. He's the only great bowler in the Pakistani test lineup.
Something I've never seen before... notice how the last batter, Clarke, came in with 32 runs? This is because Clarke was forced to "retire hurt" (injured) earlier in the innings, but apparently was OK enough to come back in and bat after the 9th wicket fell. I honestly have never seen that before, but apparently that's a thing that can happen! (retire hurt does NOT mean you're out, but if that batter absolutely can't continue, a team can end their innings after just nine outs instead of the customary ten.)
@SynthMusicFan 501 both you and OP are men of culture
Sad story but true, Phillip Hughes was killed in 2014 playing for South Australia. He was marked down as ''retired hurt'' but the controlling authority instructed the score keeper to change the scorebook to ''not out''. This is the only time a controlling authority has interferred in a game of professional cricket in 200 years.
@SynthMusicFan 501 Ahhhhh... so I'm from the US and I didn't start watching cricket until 2008. (The 2008 Stanford SuperStars match that happened to be on ESPN2) I didn't REALLY get into cricket until about 2011 or 2012 with the Caribbean Twenty20 series that was on what was known as ESPN3 at the time. I've since picked up a Willow TV subscription.
@@nickhanlon9331 retired hurt
@@nickhanlon9331 he had left NSW for South Australia and was playing against NSW oddly enough.
I may not know much but I do know Trent Boules has no right to be that cool after walk off winning on the last bowl.
"Lovely" Trenty (as he's affectionately known), is a clutch player. International standard swing/seam bowler, absolute madman in the field (check some of his catches!), and as this clip shows, no slouch at scoring a few quick runs at the death (end of the innings).
He's a bit of a national hero in NZ.
It is crazy how often cricket comes down to the last or last few balls! Especially for the Black Caps (New Zealands national team) in ODIs (One Day Internationals, 50 overs ea side, so 600 balls bowled). So tense but soooo good!!!
Test cricket is over 100 hundred years old, the amount of countries playing x amount of tests in over 100 years is A LOT. There have only been 2 tied test series
Uh, actually in 50 overs cricket 300 balls are bowled.
As a New Zealander who loves cricket, i've gotten into nhl and baseball over the last few years (the nhl is fucking awesome). so cool watching new sports, and glad to see americans (and others) getting exposure to cricket.
I am loving learning about a sport I had only ever heard of in novels set in London. Who doesn't want to know about cool shit? Thanks Jom!
I'm an Aussie who has watched and loved every one of Jomboy's baseball breakdowns. Shout out to all the Americans watching these cricket breakdowns. Thanks for spreading international understanding, Jomboy.
I'm sold on the cricket! Thanks Jomboy for the breakdown.
The thing about (ahem cough cough) *Trent Boult is he's an amazing Bowler, this was not expected of him, which makes it even more fantastic. It also probably led to an easier ball being thrown, as the bowler didn't expect Boult to be able to get this.
trevors on the mind at all times
Imagine tripping over your words about cricket.
Imagine getting 3 wickets in an over only to get hit for a six on the last ball by Trent Boult. How horrible this would have been for the bowler.
And the thing is that actually Trent Boult is the kind of bowler you bring in to bat in this sort of situation actually because he CAN REALLY hit it - he doesn't so much bat for a long time, and he doesn't usually just poke it into the gap for a single run but he's known for being able to really slam the cover off it.
@@marklnz It certainly isn't the first time Boult made the tail proud.
Good thing I was reading the caption for the announcer at the end or else I would have thought he said “TRENT BOLES HAD SEX. HE DID IT”
I got into cricket after watching the 2010 documentary Fire in Babylon about the West Indies cricket team beating England in 1984. It’s a great movie with a great soundtrack and I’m glad other Americans will hopefully start to get into this great sport.
LOVE the cricket videos!!! I fell into a very deep cricket wormhole the other day on RUclips all because of Jomboy's videos. Keep them coming!!
What other videos did you watch ?
So the baseball equivalent of this is a pitcher hitting a walkoff homer

In case anyone wants to know why the second ball was not faced by the new batsman, on the first ball of the over that was the high fly ball before being caught, there was enough time for the batsmen to run between the wickets. They therefore ‘crossed (ran past each other) before the ball was caught’. The new batsmen therefore stands at the non-facing end. This is advantageous as the person who will face the next ball should be more up to game speed and better able to deal with the next ball/pitch. Except of course, he wasn’t…
Lol thank you! I noticed the change/non-change. When a ball is deemed wide and the batting team get a run, does that count as a bowl in the over or do they just rebowl?
@@Ibangedmatt Wides, or no balls (a no ball is any other illegal ball, which can include too high on the fly, too high off the bounce, bouncing twice before the batsman, or bowlers foot being too far forward when bowling, as the most common ones) are all rebowled and basically there is a free run for the batting side. It doesn't count to the total
why the new batter already has 30 runs in? I thought if out never bat again?
@@fiqihfandrian8416 he must have left the game for some minor injury. You can retire a batsman not out if they are hurt or the opposing captain and umpire agree

Great breakdown Jomboy, NZ cricket fan here and its great seeing the game being explained so well to a wider audience. Starting following baseball because of your breakdowns so I hope we can get a few converts over to cricket from the US.
Greetings from Australia! Just wanna give you huge props for how you break down cricket for the American audience. You do such a great job. I dig all your breakdowns but nothing beats a “LETS GO!!!” Peace.
Love the cricket content, and the fact that you're being noticed by the broadcasters in my hemisphere.
Just a technical point. If the bowler bowls a wide, it is counted as a run, but the batsman doesn't get credit for it. It is marked by the scorer as an "extra". When you look at the score card, you'll see all the batsmen listed in order, and then under all of them, the extras.
Apparently, the third highest scorer for England this year in test cricket (the 5 day version, so think of it as marathon cricket) is extras.
that's so embarrassing lmaoo
I saw that on the ch7 broadcast and was so confused. It is truly pathetic though
As an Australian, English cricket being this terrible again is like a wave of nostalgia
(For the Americans who might be reading this, the rivalry between Australia and England is the oldest and biggest in cricket; think Yankees/Red Sox level. And for my whole life starting in 1989 until 2005, Australia never lost a series against England)
That is an hilarious stat.
@@ahogg5960 Yes. I started following cricket in late 90s. Till early 2010s England was an average team - not bad but not great either.
Havent even watched the vid yet, just wanna say how awesome it is to see my small home town cricket team's achcivements are being featured on an american stage as big as this, big ups from all us in Kiwiland!!
It would be good to have a NZ team in the BBL.
Can we get a break down of the Australia domination over England in their test cricket matchup?
Too soon, the POMS are still crying into their cuppa tea mate

Jomboy should break down at least one of the many recorded England batting collapses
I have a feeling there will be some copyright issues with that. A reason he's doing the NZ leagues is cause they don't care about that crap.
As a kiwi, it’s always great to see NZ sports on here, but as a man from Canterbury, this video = pain
If you fancy doing it, I think a breakdown of the difference between spin and pace bowlers (with some footage of the best of each) would be really interesting for your American audience. Knowing nothing about baseball, the way you explained in your previous videos what the pitcher and catcher were doing in terms of tactical signals, spin/fade, and positioning within the strike zone was an absolute revelation!
(as an example, here are some absolutely ridiculous spin bowler deliveries: ruclips.net/video/ZYvgMaH_I-U/видео.html )
thank god, a new breakdown - now i don't need to start doing my work for at least another six and a half minutes
Underrated aspect of this: Ed Nuttall, the bowler bowling this last over, conceded 29 runs off a single over earlier in the match. If he'd won it with this final over, it would have been an incredible comeback.
@SynthMusicFan 501 They were 46/0 after 4 overs. Truly, cricket works in mysterious ways.
@SynthMusicFan 501 they were absolutely flying, lost a couple of wickets, and then started playing like a test match for some reason
As an Aussie who loves baseball, it's great seeing Jomboy get into cricket and bring the T20 to the Yanks. Keep it up man. Maybe one day you'll need to fly to Aus and watch the Big Bash final.
within 10 minutes i learned an entire new sport thanks to Jomboy, amazing work sir
A subtle insight is that Clarke appeared to have 32(12) when he came out. Which probably meant he batted earlier in the innings, then retired hurt, then came back in as the last batter in a last ditch attempt for his team to win - and they did.
"and a new batter named Boult has come in, and we're at the back end of the batting order" Boults been at the back end of most International matches the Black Caps have play for the last 10 years. He's slogged a few 6s in his day, so of course he's the one to step up and bring the game home.
His experience of being in the same position as a bowler and therefore knowing exactly what Nuttall was thinking would have given Boulty a nice advantage here.
Boult put the screws in the losing team .
it's funny that you'd say "why don't they just throw an unhittable ball", this exact situation happened in a match between new zealand and australia in 1981, new zealand needed a 6 to win, and the australian bowler rolled the ball underarm down the pitch to stop the batsman from hitting it properly. people are still upset about it

"Trent Boult's done it! He's hit a six!". The New Zealand accent has it's nuances.

Commentators might say a catch is "taken for the wicket" but you'd usually just say they were caught out.
Oh also the batter doesn't score from a wide, just the team does. So happy to see more cricket content on this channel!
@@tomdron Right, it’s counted as an extra, like non lbw hits off the batsman’s body that go for a fee runs?
@@wyattmund9286 Yes, those are called "leg byes" - just like "byes" except off the batter's body. ("Byes" are runs the batter takes after he's missed it, it misses him but the wicketkeeper/catcher also misses it.)
