The top of so many lists! This is a truly iconic track, not just for EXO but for Kpop. It was HUGE! It's still popular. It made EXO a household name. For me, it hasn't aged at all.
I hope Electric Kiss is on that list. DO says he doesn’t like that one because the choreography is so difficult and demanding. They do a great job on it!!
EXO is so damn good at their choreos that Kai made his accidental hat drop look like it was part of it, that boy turned so smoothly many people have missed it or genuinely think its part of it but nope just their hardcore training kicking in and never failed. Not surprised you chose growl as your #1 it didn't become a national anthem for nothing 😂 The second version of the mv is also pretty good. Thanks for another great vid.
Growl was a MASSIVE hit which ended 12 years of drought. Literally everyone in S.K knows this song, infact those who didn't know this song were considered spies. I think the popularity and impact of this song can be considered as high as "I am your father" line in Star Wars. Key (SHINee) said this song buot the SM's building.
ahhh Growl.. the song that took South Korea by storm and started the 3rd generation of kpop while popularising the school uniform concept and one take videos (btw you can see Kai dropped his hat near the bridge of the song but he picked it up so smoothly people thought it was a part of the choreo until he revealed it was an accident in one of the interviews😂), so much nostalgia comes with it. and you've heard a snippet of it on the killing voice :3
As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one-take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one-take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake, they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming this MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography for the filming of this MV until they physically could not do it anymore. But not even this take was technically "perfect." If you notice, Kai drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. (The stealing of the hat is actually part of the choreography.) As you saw, Kai needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, the director and editors decided to use this footage anyway. And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho steps on Sehun's foot and Sehun swats him as if to say, "hey, watch out.". :D. Fun fact: Those aren't just suits that they are wearing. Those are individualized school uniforms. The unaltered versions would be what Korean students would wear when attending school. What makes EXO's uniforms special is that no two uniforms were the same, each member has their own version. (Although school uniforms have been the norm for most girl groups as a concept, EXO was one of the very first boy groups to use the concept in their MVs. And after "Growl" was released, almost all boy groups that came after them have had at least one MV where they wore school uniforms as part of the concept for the song.) In the beginning of the performance MV, you start out by seeing 6 of the members, and as the camera spins around, you see the other 6 members. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently. (Anything that takes place before 2014, you will see all 12 original members involved.) However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage, because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this. EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. There is a drama video that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. Here is a link to the full "Growl" and "Wolf" drama version, ruclips.net/video/sFCvZUSnuus/видео.html. Plus, there are several iconic live performances of "Growl" as well.
If you notice, the camera movements are actually part of the choreography, because the camera is another character in the performance. Just like in EXO's "Wolf" and "Call Me Baby" MVs, etc., the camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. So that is why they are looking at the camera so intensely because they are trying to get the girl's attention. They are each trying to impress her with their moves. If you look up an English lyric video for "Growl" -- which are YT videos made by fans that translate the lyrics of the song into English and they show you who is singing each line of the song -- you will see EXO are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast that can no longer control themselves around the girl, and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully) It’s dangerous now (so dangerous) Stop provoking me (there’s going to be trouble) I don’t even know myself ... My breath keeps on stopping You walk towards me You smile at me Maybe you’re attracted to me too .... A dark shadow has woken up inside of me Sparks fly in my eyes as I look at you Everyone step away from her (step away) It’s going to get fierce from now on I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling If you don’t back away then I don’t care if you get hurt ..." etc. There aren't saying"Put it on me." what they are saying is "eureureong, eureureong, eureureong dae," which means "I'm growling, growling, growling" in Korean. Hence, the song is called "Growl." EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV, all while singing live as well. You should also check out their Beauty and Beast performance at the 2013 MAMA awards to see how impressive they perform the full "Growl" choreography live, ruclips.net/video/ycql_T6Fc9c/видео.html. "Growl" and their one-take performance is what launched EXO into superstardom and it's what made them the most popular group in Korea. It's one of the reasons why the government has given EXO the title of Korea's national boy group. However, "Growl" came out in 2013, about a year after EXO debuted, and up until that point EXO wasn't very well known or popular. When they first debuted, many people called them "SM's biggest mistake." Because the concept of them being aliens from Planet Exo and the fact that they were designed specifically to debut in both Korea and China and several foreign Chinese members were chosen specifically to make up their own sub-unit, etc., many people had a hard time understanding how EXO would ever be successful. The group started out being branded as SM's first failure, and they thought Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) was crazy for coming up with the group. But when the one-take video for "Growl" was released, everyone began to take notice. This video was pretty groundbreaking, no group had done a one take video quite like this and it proved to the mainstream audiences that SM really did know what they were doing. Now everyone in Korea and around the world knows EXO and they have become one of the most popular groups that are one of the biggest money-makers for SM. "Growl" has become what they are most known for. "Growl" is nicknamed South Korea's second national anthem, so you may start to notice that you hear it used everywhere. It's played all over the place and is used as background music, etc. in a lot of things. EXO even performed this song, along with their song "Power," at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018, and both songs were Olympic theme songs that could be heard at venues and events throughout the games that year. EXO was the only Kpop group to be asked to perform at the Olympics that year, which just goes to show you how influential and popular they have become.
MAMA is the first song that I listen to EXO song. Love this song and its powerful that’s why I still love it. For Growl, excellent in every part especially MV.❤️
It took them around 50 takes to find the perfect one to use as the mv tho. Funniest part is when Kai thought this one won't make it, because he 'messed up' by making his cap fell. He had to pick it up and continue to dance like nothing happened because they've done dozens of takes, and everyone was beyond tired.
I love your unique reactions and always look forward to your new work. For some reason, this ``one-take version'' was surprisingly unpopular at first, with comments such as ``it doesn't convey the greatness of the one-take'' and ``there are no close-ups of the members' faces.'' Therefore, SM also created a ``2ND version''. The songs are exactly the same, and over time, people started to appreciate the original one-take version, and maybe the second version was forgotten? The total number of views did not increase, reaching 44 million times. Almost unseen. Second version: EXO 엑소 '으르렁 (Growl)' MV 2nd Version (Korean Ver.) ruclips.net/video/AUs-hBjU9w8/видео.html
yes this is one take MV. rumor has it it took 13 takes to get it perfect. I dunno if the 13 takes are just for the Exo K MV or if it included takes for the Exo M ver. of the MV.
Everybody and their mamas and grandmamas know Growl in S.K. 😂 practically every kpop group has covered this or at least learned this choreo during their training… it’s always played in award shows and always in the list of iconic kpop songs. Shinee Key has even said in an interview that Exo Growl alone built the whole damn new SM entertainment building (whereas Shinee only contributed 1 elevator). 😂Key even joked that if the company were smaller, all Exo members would be board members by now 😂 But seriously, Exo set so many records with this track way before kpop and kdramas and kculture became mainstream in the West. Truly impressive feat and they keep breaking their records every year. There is an orchestra version of this just released this year, quite cool to hear. There are so many versions of this song never gets old! Also because it ‘s xmas please react to The First Snow - 10 year old exo song charting in the top10 daily charts again in Korea, the only boy group song on the daily charts right now😂 it placed 2nd last week on Music Bank and nominated again this week, besting all the new releases. Not gonna lie this song was my least favorite for the longest time despite knowing it's their biggest hit. However after a few years it's finally growing on me. But even with it being my least favorite, EXO's songs are no skip. The only group where even my least favorite is still no skip.
The queen GROWL ❤ It's almost 2024 and everybody are still growling 🔥
Growl is one of the two songs they performed at the Seoul Olympics, along with Power. Yes That was Luhan pink hair.
Just to clarify- PyeongChang Winter Olympic, not Seoul :)
