I was probably 11 or 12 years old, we had no rock'n'roll then in Spain, only local artists in radio and national TV. I was traveling in a car with my parents and sisters. We stopped at a gas station. And then I saw a cassette with a big man with a big guitar and a Texan hat. And I could convince my father to buy the cassette because I felt an immediate connection with this man. We went back to the car and put the cassette and I heard boogie for the first time in my life. This riff changed my life. My sisters still remember me of that moment. I don't know where the cassette is but I have always loved Sleepy since then. RIP my old friend.
RIP Sleepy Labeef, a Rockabilly legend and gentle giant! I was lucky enough to meet him several times years ago at a local record store (The Rockpile) and was taken back by his enormous stature yet kind voice...He told me stories of life on the road and how he had shared the stage with some major talent and as a backing musician for many as well, Bonnie Raitt comes to mind. We reminisced for awhile each time we met until it was time for one of us to meander on....I’ll always remember his kind words, stature, massive hands, deep voice and the big ole Caddy he crossed the country in countless times.....rest easy Tom!
I saw Sleepy in Somerville. Johnny D's a few years ago. We got there early and Sleepy was just standing there alone. We went up to him slowly and he said come over here fellas I'm going to tell you about the old days. He sure did. We talked to him for a half hour and I could have listened for hours. I had so many questions, but I kept it to a few and let him tell us about the old days. He told us he knew Elvis personally and also Johnny Cash. He told us he knew 300 songs and maybe more. He said I was never a rich man but I did okay. He said he was rich with pride and honor when he saw the crowd cheering for him every night .When he had to leave to go get ready for the show ,he said tell my story to everyone you want and God Bless my friends. So I just wanted to share. He was such a kind man. So glad I finally got the chance to meet him. I've been seeing him since 1977 and didn't miss many shows. He lived in Boston for some time back in the day.
Only had the good fortune of meeting SLB once at the Zoo bar in Lincoln, NE around 1985. He was great on stage, of course, but what i will never forget is when he left the stage for a break and pushed through the crowd, he extended his hand to me and friend Mike, with a great, happy smile, and said "Hi, I am Sleepy LaBeef, glad to meet you!" A real simple honest man of great talent and little ego. RIP Sleepy.
I was Shocked to get to spend my 24th Birthday with Sleepy in a little Club in New Orleans…Met him All of a Sudden at the door of the club when He Walked in…Somebody said it was my Birthday…and Sleepy Very kindly shook my hand… and asked me…He said,”Son what would You like for me to Play for You tonight”…Out of my mouth came,”Lost Highway by Hank” and I’ll be dog gone as the evenin’ went on He kept mentioning that it was my birthday…Gals came round me and Hugged me…Bought me drinks and asked for cigarettes…Then at The end of the Night Sleepy said,”Happy Birthday Kristofer…This is for you…and He Played,”Lost Highway”. A Biggg Tremendous Guy…With a Bigger Heart.
First heard this tremendous talent many years ago at the Hillbilly Ranch on the edge of Boston's infamous Combat Zone in the late 70's and had an opportunity to hear a few more time in some very intimate setting's around Mass. suburbs. America has lost a gentle giant and a great man, R.I.P. Sleepy!
Saw Sleepy at the Hillbilly Ranch too i miss that dive the stockade fence and the area of Boston. also saw him 3 or 4 more times and got that Yellow Sun record
I as well played at the Hillbilly with Sleepy, Clete on drums and Hal on pedal steel in '76, you had to be on your toes (weird saying ?) to keep up with Sleepy ! He always looked after his band mates, miss you Bud !
Yes..! I just saw Marty Stuart a few months ago and I was certain that was Kenny up there. So sorry to hear of Sleepy passing. Thankful that we live in a time of recorded sounds and images. One can only imagine what we missed for several thousands (millions..?) of years. All that talent gone with the wind.
FANTASTICO !!! NO HAY NADIE COMO SLEEPY !!! CON SUS CASI 77 AÑOS Y TODA ESA ENERGIA... EXCELENTE NOTICIA PARA LOS FANS DE SLEEPY Y PARA EL MUNDO ENTERO.
Had the good fortune to have seen him once live in Boston. If memory serves correctly, it was at the Hillbilly Ranch, kind of a ramshackle place that clung next to the neighboring buildings like an infected big toe. Yeah, it was that damned good. Late '70s. Helluva show.
Thanks for all the nice comments. Sleepy was a huge influence in my life and career. If you are interested, the DVD and soundtrack CD are still available at www.davepomeroy.com, and sales will continue to generate money for Sleepy's family.
Dave, this is great! What a happy surprise to find you and Sleepy playing together. Joe Sullivan - played piano with you two back in '77 - '78. Those were the days!
Awesome! He's my Great, great Uncle but I never had the honor of meeting him. My Grandmother is his Niece and they sang together in church choir. Love his music. Raising my Daughter to love it.
blacknumber1 I had the pleasure of meeting him once & he is a very kind man with an awsome feel for music always making gestures to the soundman to make adjustmants & going from one song to another he dedicated to my dad a rare song he recorded in the early 60s "I'm the man" (cant find it anywhere on youtube & the original 45 recording is very hard for me to find)

I ain't got no home
No place to roam
I ain't got a home
No place to roam
I'm a lonely boy
I ain't got a home
I ain't got no sister
I ain't got a brother

Not even a mother
I'm a lonely boy
I ain't got a home
Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo
Well, I got a voice
And I love to sing
I can sing like a bird
And I can sing like a frog
I'm a lonely boy
I ain't got a home
I ain't got a girl
I ain't got a son
I ain't got no kin
I ain't got no one
I'm a lonely frog
I ain't got a home

Let me be your friend
Won't you take me in
Let me be your friend
I'm a lonely boy

Love is a burnin' thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire
I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild
I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
The ring of fire...
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
The ring of fire...
