With the new 2nd gen XC90 as we did the same thing putting all 7 seats up, we still have room to put a baby stroller, a high chair AND day packs or a hand luggage!
Yeah it’s a bit stupid to think you’d ever need to put 7 adults in a personal car. If you’re going out drinking you take a taxi, if you’re not drinking then you just take two cars wherever you’re going. Also I’ve never known a group of 7 adults who are in a friendship where they’d all leave for the pub together 😂. I’m mean just having a group of 7 of you is a push to start with

I think the XC90 at the time is all kinds of cool It’s what got me into Volvo especially since my aunt has a 2007 XC90 which is still running strong at 150k miles
They're great cars. I used to own an s80 turbo and I now own an s60 Turbo. I love them both. My s60, which is a "sports sedan" mind you, just got me 85 miles home in a damn near blizzard where I was passing crashed cars at least every 5 miles. Never even slipped once. I love my Volvos!
I have an '05 Discovery 3 TDV6 on 240k miles and its only previous owner was my father. Never any major issues, absolutely brilliant car. They don't like cheap parts and should be serviced regularly. I would like to keep it for many more years!
Ever since 2002 to the current model, when the XC90 first came out, there has been no fatal accident with the Volvo. It just goes to show that these Volvos are built to last and keep people safe.
Our family has a 2011 XC90 with the 3.2L inline 6 with over 300,000km on it. Never failed us, never broke down, and has only had the regular maintenance put into it. I'm willing to bet my left testy that the Discovery is an unreliable brick.
I have a 2001 V70 XC. And I saw a video pitting it against a Jeep and Land Rover offroad. It's AWD system bested both in everything but a heavy rock hill climb...because it's a wagon. It still made it up the damn hill anyway after an extra 20 seconds and an adjustment. Nobody thinks of them being absolute monsters in terrible conditions. They are though..
Turns out the rover , is riddled with electrical and electronic faults that increase as the resale value sinks quicker than the titanic did. Volvo may not be the benchmark that it is to be, but still keeps got!
You realise that d3 residuals are rising fairly rapidly and that the Volvo has some pretty significant flaws of it's own. The simple fact is that you need deep pockets for maintenance if you want to own either of these vehicles. And, if you maintain them, then they will both be good reliable vehicles for many years
Used xc90's are cheaper than Discos of the same year... I'm looking to get an XC90 as tow/family wagon and they are much cheaper than an equivalent disco
Had an XC90 and it was brilliant for everything as a family suv and even great in the snow , It never went wrong , was always sure footed , had oodles of space for everything a family could throw at it many friends from the (bonnet up club ) aka Land Rover had no end of issues - gremlins in the electrics and more besides and I only knew five people with Landys and four of them had issues !. The TWO faults I can say with the XC90 were 1. poor fuel consumption for a modern engine even my diesel version returned only around 31 mpg no matter how carefully it was driven . 2. Every year it failed it's MOT because of the handbrake (operated by foot peddle ) would not hold the vehicle on an incline . It had to be adjusted at the Volvo dealers every year and it was not a quick job as it has some sort of separate drum brake system reserved for parking brake only so was a cost that was well north of £100 each year for a simple hand brake adjustment .and it pissed me off to pay every year for it .
I recently bought a Xc90 and was not impressed with the "hand-foot-brake" either....but after watching a couple of vids here on YT.... it was a piece of cake to adjust it. Just check there is ample "meat" on the drum shoes before you do. 100 quid plus? No way. Bring here....I'll do it in 20 minutes for 50. BTW...Rear disc brakes with drums for the parking brake is very common these days....
Hi Ross...got one too.... a bit long in the tooth at 2009 I guess, but only at 180,000 Kms (not miles on my odometer) still purring like a kitten...until you show it the throttle of course. Given its weight, it's pretty agile. I do my own servicing and did the auto-box oil change....not cheap even so. (It's a flush-the-system change...not simply drain-refill.) That fluid is hellish pricy where I live...but peace of mind comes at a price. The next job is to service the Haldex AWD system.... I'm just glad that I don't mind getting my hands dirty and have the basic skills required, along with helpful videos here on YT. Stay safe.
I never got topgears hate for diesels. "It isint very good" i will assume that is a D5 wich is one of the most reliable, powerfull yet still supremly efficient engines. In the late 90s to 2010's there is no reason to buy anything else than a disel, they were just better. More powerful More efficient More reliable
Share the reg then and we can all see if it’s just another nice little RUclips story or somebody is actually telling the truth about a Land Rover, most of the comments I read are BS...I suspect this is too, however I hope I’m proved wrong so I’ll just wait for the registration...
@@PillSharks Maybe... but a quick look at the used market, a decade or so on.... and there arent many LR out there, least of all in decent shape. Maybe theyre just so good that no one wants to sell them, ever... even after 150k mi on them, etc. Then I suppose you have to look up the importation numbers and see how many of each were brought it.... I suspect it has more to do with the LR failing sooner than that Volvo, and the extreme cost of repairs on the LR prevents many on the secondary market wanting to purchase them. Or the 2nd, 3rd owner cant afford a new engine so it is sold to junk yards to be parted out.
If I was earning the same amount of money as Hammond and May, I would choose the Discovery too...I've been told that the cost of running a Discovery 3 is like having a second mortgage.
Also any Land Rover needs a new gear box after 70’000 Miles. Volvos go on for well over 500’000 miles and more...D5 the best engine Volvo has ever made.
@Pierce Belfast Yah just like mini even BMW people say be careful of buying a old land rover plus those era of BMW engines have problems with timing chains if I remember correctly.
I don't agree, although I suspect it improved later. The version in the original XC90 is noisy and underpowered. Their best engine was the 2.4t petrol I had in my v70 - relatively quick, economical and was still going strong at 270k miles
There’s rarely a scenario where three friends need to get into one of their cars, let alone 7 😂. Anywhere you go with 7 friends is either an event or a night out, so you just get taxis. Also even if you were just like going paint balling or something with 7 of you, you’d just take two cars.
The chances of you all nedding to go in the same car is slim anyway because why are you all setting off from the same place? Unless you're at university, you're going to live in separate places and make your own way there.
There are more scenarios than you might think, three teenage children and a couple of friends/ grandparents or something and you can get to 7 more quickly than you think, it mainly depends on family size
Judging by the used market, there are far more Volvos still around.... not so much the LRs... Then again, most people who get ahold of a LR probably push it harder than most who buy the Volvo. Of course, generally speaking, Volvo has always had a better reputation for long term reliability
Love our XC90. Later 200hp D5, plenty of grunt for towing and at 170,000 miles it can still do a 600 mile week without even having to think about it breaking. If you want to do serious off roading you’d buy the Disco. For everything else, the Volvo.
Swapped my wifes money pit disco 3 for a xc90 d5 awd.... When we leave the house in it we now do so with reasonable confidence of getting back again. For long journeys the comfort factor of the volvo far exceeds the disco.

I bet theres far more Volvo's..... I like Clarkson, but by God, he chats some crap!
The D5 is one of the most reliable engines ever made, but you couldn't see that when ot was new. All one could see was that it doesn't sound, pull or look as good as the V8 thats why Clarkson hates it I think
After watching hooves garage I would be so afraid to ever own a rover. Also at the euro mechanic shop I worked at our top customers were rover owners lol
I've got a Freelander 2 with the 3.2 i6. Volvo engine. How unreliable ? The Volvo engine suffered complete failure at 114K and was replaced by Land Rover at a cost of £12k ! The vehicle was owned previously by a woman in Kensington who had it maintained regardless of cost -at the local main dealer , even taking it to LR for simple things like a bulb ! All servicing was carried out to schedule . It's on 154K now and still pulls like a train. The only problem I've had in my 7 year ownership was the auxiliary belt tensioner seized, causing belt failure and loss of power steering. And the vacuum pump leaked, but I replaced the gasket !
just by looking at the used market locally, I would say so... there are many out there for various prices with a wide range of mileage... Cars dont get up to 150k-200k miles by being pieces of shit
If you plan on buying this generation of XC90, be aware that if you aren’t careful you could end up with a financial disaster no matter which engine you choose. Electrical, AWD and engine issues get really expensive really fast here. In 2022 I’d say get a V70 or XC70 instead

I think when this was filmed the biggest engine on offer was the 2.4, the V8 in that/S80 was something incredible
@@alistairpatterson429 yeah you are right this was season 4 aired in 2004 and the v8 was released in 2005. i know myself own a 07 S80 V8 :)
Ive got a 2008 xc90 and still driving it now. Its amazing how these things are built. Its literally built like a tank, the paint job is superb compared to even new cars.
With the new 2nd gen XC90 as we did the same thing putting all 7 seats up, we still have room to put a baby stroller, a high chair AND day packs or a hand luggage!
Can also (just) fit adults on the third row of the 2nd gen XC90!
Still own 2 XC90s. 2007- 2008. They may be as old as my kids, but they have kicked ass!
Let us also not forget that Jeremy’s wife owned an XC90 to “get their kids around”....
And Jeremy himself drives Range Rovers
lol
!
Jeremy is right against Richard here, why would you put 7 adults in a car, any car in fact? At least for any time longer than a drive down to the pub.
7 adults in Richard's size can fit easily in a mini.
Plus, anyone that has a 7 seater... Or rather more seats than standard, is automatically going to be called on to be the designated driver...
I’m mean just having a group of 7 of you is a push to start with
I had 7 adult people in my toyota less than 3 weeks ago.... living in a city where bridge tolls and parking are expensive it happens a lot.
Or you have a huge family. That's why my father just bought cars which are capable to transport 7 people.
My 05 XC90 is still on the road! Not ever taking it off the road either! Transmission is still hanging in there with 153k miles on it
Update: It now has 162k on it. I forgot to mention it is the T6 (2.9L Turbo) and Its still got the original transmission.
Mine has 230k miles and still going strong!
*JESUS IS HERE*
Shut up Jesus.
that's weird al, not jesus
Jeremy: I'm sorry if you had loins as active as mine
Hammond: Overactive
I think the XC90 at the time is all kinds of cool
It’s what got me into Volvo especially since my aunt has a 2007 XC90 which is still running strong at 150k miles
The fact Jeremy Clarkson has owned THREE XC90s speaks volumes. Even he knows the discos are pommie crap
He’s owned more Range Rovers than Volvo’s though.
Lmao the Range Rover is one of his favourite cars
@@HGVCraig and you see his Range Rover on Clarksons farm, but there is no XC90 in sight😜
The Range Rover is his favourite SUV
The fact he had to have 3 XC90s over a short period shows how bad they were. His Range Rover has been going for 15 years now!
I own a XC90 With the 2,5T Best car i ever owned. It drives just like new.
What year is it?
They're great cars. I used to own an s80 turbo and I now own an s60 Turbo. I love them both. My s60, which is a "sports sedan" mind you, just got me 85 miles home in a damn near blizzard where I was passing crashed cars at least every 5 miles. Never even slipped once. I love my Volvos!

I have an 04 V70 2.5T. Granted this XC90 is the upgraded version I love my v70

Hi, is manual or automatic transmission?
@@georgemasaka6488 we live in Canada only the automatics were sold here
I have had 10 Discoveries over the years and never had significant problems with any of them. The latest one built in Slovakia is definitely the best!
I have an '05 Discovery 3 TDV6 on 240k miles and its only previous owner was my father. Never any major issues, absolutely brilliant car. They don't like cheap parts and should be serviced regularly. I would like to keep it for many more years!
The current generation made in Slovakia is just ugly. They don’t need to do that stupid asymmetrical back but they do it to be obtuse on purpose.
I’ve been a fan of Land Rover for years but admitting I do like Volvo’s more nowadays. V70’s estates look brilliant
Age will do that to you.
Im
I’m amazed. How could you call that box brilliant looking? A fair comparison would be the f11, now that is a brilliant looking 3box car!
And they fit in car parks :-)
Ever since 2002 to the current model, when the XC90 first came out, there has been no fatal accident with the Volvo. It just goes to show that these Volvos are built to last and keep people safe.
discovery has never dated..amazing design.
Jeremy saying the D5 wasn't good has aged well! We have one with 215k miles and is still pulling like a train
I was looking for that clip for a loooong time.
Plenty of Mk1 XC90’s on the roads, some of which have clocked up half a million miles….
Can’t say that for the Defender.
I think the bicycle also featured on the top gear ground force in redgrave’s garden.
Aha good spot but they’re ever so slightly different - Sir Steve Redgrave’s daughter’s bicycle has more purple bits on it
It did and they broke it with a 7.5t wagon
2:36 “Jesus is here” bro that killed me 😂
Turns out the rover , is riddled with electrical and electronic faults that increase as the resale value sinks quicker than the titanic did.
That Volvo has also been scrapped.
Had an XC90 and it was brilliant for everything as a family suv and even great in the snow , It never went wrong , was always sure footed , had oodles of space for everything a family could throw at it
many friends from the (bonnet up club ) aka Land Rover had no end of issues - gremlins in the electrics and more besides and I only knew five people with Landys and four of them had issues !.
The TWO faults I can say with the XC90 were
1. poor fuel consumption for a modern engine even my diesel version returned only around 31 mpg no matter how carefully it was driven .
I literally failed my MOT due to bad handbrake on my 2005 xc90 a week ago!
@@gangigooga7710 See above.....
V8 XC90 here with 248,000 miles. Runs and drives perfectly with regular maintenance. Great vehicle
(It's a flush-the-system change...not simply drain-refill.)
That fluid is hellish pricy where I live...but peace of mind comes at a price.
The next job is to service the Haldex AWD system....
I'm just glad that I don't mind getting my hands dirty and have the basic skills required, along with helpful videos here on YT.
Stay safe.
Ive always had a volvo xc60 and it is so smooth and feels and sounds like ur driving a tank
Still got mine..... paid for by breakdown recovery work..... largely moving various forms of Land Rover.... 🙂🇬🇧
I never got topgears hate for diesels. "It isint very good" i will assume that is a D5 wich is one of the most reliable, powerfull yet still supremly efficient engines. In the late 90s to 2010's there is no reason to buy anything else than a disel, they were just better.
More powerful
More efficient
More reliable
I miss old top gear👍
The 2020s XC90 is an absolute monster, in fact I would take it over any other SUV on the market.
I just got a 2004 XC90 in that exact color last Monday! 😂forgot about this episode.
I work at a Volvo dealership. Those XC90s are still popular
My 2008 xc90 out lasted my fathers 2008 disco. Still running the xc90. Disco went long ago.
I bet you hate you father for buying the 2008 Discovery.
Share the reg then and we can all see if it’s just another nice little RUclips story or somebody is actually telling the truth about a Land Rover, most of the comments I read are BS...I suspect this is too, however I hope I’m proved wrong so I’ll just wait for the registration...

Maybe... but a quick look at the used market, a decade or so on.... and there arent many LR out there, least of all in decent shape.
2:14 You can if they're your size Richard! I can fit in and Im 6 ft tall, granted I wouldn't want to go a long way...
If I was earning the same amount of money as Hammond and May, I would choose the Discovery too...I've been told that the cost of running a Discovery 3 is like having a second mortgage.
My wife's got a 2008 XC90 V8, it is a great mid size suv! And it is soo much more reliable than a Land Rover.
what's your source for all of these clips?

@@spookylemon4947 ohhhh why have I never thought of that....amazing!!!
This Volvo is really underrated abou its capabilities…
In Canada the XC90 is available with a V8.
Also any Land Rover needs a new gear box after 70’000 Miles. Volvos go on for well over 500’000 miles and more...D5 the best engine Volvo has ever made.
BS. Mine has over 420,000 miles on the original gearbox.
@Pierce Belfast Yah just like mini even BMW people say be careful of buying a old land rover plus those era of BMW engines have problems with timing chains if I remember correctly.
@Christ Bk Yah I'd say the Jag/Ford engine would be way more reliable I don't know much about them doe.
I don't agree, although I suspect it improved later. The version in the original XC90 is noisy and underpowered. Their best engine was the 2.4t petrol I had in my v70 - relatively quick, economical and was still going strong at 270k miles
@@trainman665 manual or automatic?
There’s rarely a scenario where three friends need to get into one of their cars, let alone 7 😂. Anywhere you go with 7 friends is either an event or a night out, so you just get taxis. Also even if you were just like going paint balling or something with 7 of you, you’d just take two cars.
I go airsoft skirmishing with frds and that's exactly what we do. I drive three friends in my 2.5T, the others go get another car
It’s highly amusing to see that all these years on the Volvos are still going strong and the Discos are dead.
My disco is spot on
The Discovery’s are actually surviving far better.
You see a lot more Discovery 3's than you do Volvo SUV's
Discos are dead? Where do you live?
Judging by the used market, there are far more Volvos still around.... not so much the LRs... Then again, most people who get ahold of a LR probably push it harder than most who buy the Volvo.
Of course, generally speaking, Volvo has always had a better reputation for long term reliability
2:34 I notice that when someone disagrees with Jeremy about something he always changes the subject.
"..I'd rather be able to put adults in the third row seats and you can't do that in the vulva.."
Subtitles never disappoint.
Love our XC90. Later 200hp D5, plenty of grunt for towing and at 170,000 miles it can still do a 600 mile week without even having to think about it breaking. If you want to do serious off roading you’d buy the Disco. For everything else, the Volvo.
No one has ever died in an XC90. That’s some achievement.
I must agree with Jeremy, Volvo is way better that Land Rover
I have the exact same Volvo! I love Top Gear and I had no idea they had reviewed my car
I have friends.
If they are as small as Hammond they fit easily in the Volvo.
D5 engine is good
Yea but there lies the problem: it's a D5 in a three-row SUV.
Give it a map and your sorted
My dad has a 2010 XC-60 2.4 d5 and it will shame any diesel 5 series BMW or Audi and Mercedes
Volvos are the most under rated cars yet beautiful and reliable compared to other luxury cars. I like my bullet proof XC60.
Swapped my wifes money pit disco 3 for a xc90 d5 awd.... When we leave the house in it we now do so with reasonable confidence of getting back again. For long journeys the comfort factor of the volvo far exceeds the disco.
On Clarksons farm he has a Range Rover, though😜 No XC90 in sight😂🤣
i got the new ford explorer ad before this video starts lol
He said the (Volvo) diesel engine "isn't very good" - isn't that the D5, and a pre- DPF and all that crap D5? - one of the most reliable diesels on the market? = I wonder how many 2004 Discoveries are still on the road compared to D5 engined XC90's? I bet theres far more Volvo's.....
I like Clarkson, but by God, he chats some crap!
The D5 is one of the most reliable engines ever made, but you couldn't see that when ot was new. All one could see was that it doesn't sound, pull or look as good as the V8 thats why Clarkson hates it I think
It is decently reliable, but it's still not all that great as an engine. They are not efficient and they are pretty noisy.
I ignored both and had a Q7. Definitely the best choice.
If you are visiting the future your Volvo is still going strong!
That wasn't Jesus, it was Tiny Tim. Tiptoe through the tulips!
After watching hooves garage I would be so afraid to ever own a rover. Also at the euro mechanic shop I worked at our top customers were rover owners lol
Our Volvo has 106k and it has over 300 horsepower it's amazing to drive 🤩
Are those XC90's reliable??
definetly!
I’m 17 years old and our 2004 xc90 is still running strong
just by looking at the used market locally, I would say so... there are many out there for various prices with a wide range of mileage...

We are in 2021, Disco is still looking expensive and cool. I can’t say that for the Volvo. Disco 3-4 are state of arts. Yes they are expensive to run but thats the price of style and the sophisticated. design.
They are expensive to run because they are bady designed. Those cars are known for their terrible reliability
@@dumyjobby not worse than BMW. I have both.
