Watching this with my 08 xc90 v8 sitting outside my window reminds me of how much I love that thing. Truly still feels like a competitive suv today. She’s been totaled twice but rebuilt her because I refuse to let her go. At 300k miles and has many more to go.

I LOVE your enthusiasm for these old bricks! The XC90 V8 will always be on my list of Volvos I want to own. Currently have a P80 V70 XC and P2 XC70 (have also owned a P3 XC70 T6, C30 T5 V2.0 and S40 2.4i manual transmission at one point and loved them all for different reasons). There’s just something…. special about the P2 Volvos. I’m one to always try and have a 3 car garage (in case one of them needs some extra time being worked on in the garage 😂) and keep going between an XC90 V8 and a P2 R. It’ll be a hard choice when the time comes. Thank you again Bern for all you do and keeping another P2 alive!

Drove both. I’ve had eyes for an XC90 for 20 years. When P2 got long in the tooth, I knew it stood the test of time in terms of build quality. I got a SPA Platform XC90 CPO last month and I agree with you on several points-it’s a cruiser, it’s safe feeling, it’s a nod to how much luxurious an SUV can be without making it too detached from its roots. We will see how my 2023 XC90 is at 50,000 miles.

Your video has me all the more thankful for Falkor, my P2 2012 Volvo XC90 3.2 FWD Premier Plus in Ice White!
I recently had mine in the Volvo shop for a few days for repairs and I was given a loaner 2024 S60 B5 Black Edition. All of its tech with the large touch screen, outside cameras, heated seats, mild hybrid configuration, and automatic side mirrors really impressed me, but by the end I was ready to return to the familiarity of my own XC90. If I were to adopt all the technological complexity and flair of the S60 into a 2024 XC90, I'd be worried about which electrical component would be the first to fail.
It's one thing to address a mechanical or electrical sensor issue on my older 2012 model, but the computerization of the newer vehicles really concern me. The initial drive with the S60's new car smell was definitely the stuff of dreams and I was truly smitten for a couple days! However, what happens when that novelty wears off over time and one electrical fault can potentially cascade into another? Even though I work in IT support, I find myself wanting to maintain balance with how much technology is in my vehicle. This is what solidifies my preference for older vehicles that consider power windows, keyless remotes, parking sensors, and built-in bluetooth a luxury tech feature. At the end of the day, I just want something that can connect my phone for Spotify and reliably take me from point A to B with some comfortable, yet simple amenities. I don't want to feel like I'm driving a robot that's willing to give me the world on a silver touch-sensitive platter.
Yes, the tech in my P2 2012 feels worlds away from the SPA platform and even antiquated, but such character is what endears me to it. Since I was told years ago by a dealer shop that installing a third-party tablet on my front console would render the stock rear DVD players useless, I continue to use the standard layout to this day. Heck, I got excited the other day to find a portable speaker with a 30-pin iPod connector dock that allowed me to use my newly refreshed iPod Classic and iPod Mini devices! Perhaps I am turning into an out-of-touch soul at the age of 43 compared to the younger generations. LOL

Surprisingly, Volvo lost that "bank vault" door sometime in the '10s. My 2006 S60 still sounded like a bank vault, but my 2017 V60 Cross Country doesn't. Ironically, I have an open recall for the door latches on the V60 because they might disengage partially if a large enough shock hits it (like accidentally jumping a crowned intersection at 50mph because you're lost in a city you don't know). I did want an XC90 V8 but sadly there weren't any in my area. Yours looks stellar and I'm kinda jealous 😂 I had a former friend get annoyed with me because once he saw my V60 covered in mud when I almost got stuck on my friend's farm. He berated me because "I don't have a rally car" and I said, "ok..."
I like how the SPA models were equal parts reinvention and evolution. I've heard the sport seats are too firm and when I got my V60, I had to get used to the sport seats as well, but the standard comfort seats regardless of chassis are incredible. Hilariously I think my V60 has Sensus 2(?) but it does everything I need it to. I don't have a real reason to need a screen like the SPA models and I'd rather not be distracted by it. One thing I love about the P2 and P3 cars is you can still get a Bilstein suspension kit for them. I started off mildly with the S60, getting the B4 OE kit and then stepping up to the B6 kit, but in the V60 I went with the standard model's B12 kit. I lost maybe a half inch of ground cleareance, but I gained a MUCH more neutral handling characteristic. On the factory suspension, the rear end would come out suddenly, but with the B12 kit, it's more neutral. No matter what I had on the S60, it was always nose-heavy, so I got used to it. One thing that surprised both me and a buddy: The P3 V60 Cross Country weighs 4000lbs. He'd driven it a couple times and said, "It feels like a truck, but handles well. No wonder it needs the turbo." We laughed about it because the S60's problem was its turning radius was within 3 feet of a Lamborghini Diablo or Chevrolet Tahoe.

    • @t8polestarcyan22
      @t8polestarcyan22 Месяц назад

I have to agree with you with that "bank vault" door. My 2011 1st gen Volvo V60 have a much better door thunk sound over a 2016 2nd gen Volvo XC90. Even an owner of that XC90 agrees.

The older XC90 V8 have more consistent power from its pure V8 engine where the newer T8 is only a "T8" when you have enough battery for its electric motor. Otherwise the T8 will eventually become a FWD T6. When you do fancy doing full EV mind you it'll be a very short commute and it'll be a... P2 (maybe P3) performance. P, from electrified Polestar cars that's why I didn't say T2 or T3. Basically I do understand why the older XC90 is preferable.
As for a family car I'll take the new T8. As for a driver's 5 door wagon... I'll go for a V60, V70 or a V90 (proper V90 NOT V90 CC). Yes I do prefer sitting that low.
I do enjoy that V8 sounds though and the older XC90 is still more than enough as a family car.

As much as I like how luxurious and powerful the newest XC90’s are, I prefer the 2004-2014 ones because they had so many different engines and I really miss the in-line 6. The new motors don’t have as much personality and don’t feel fitting for an almost 5k pounds suv despite having more than enough power for the job. I’ll admit, the turbo in-line 4 engines are pretty torquey and feel great when you mat the throttle.

I love this review. Very unique! I only drive Volvos and have owned many including a 2009 XC90 V8 and a 2009 S80 V8 (both purchased new on the same day) and we currently have a 2023 XC90 T8. The XC90 V8 and the S80 V8 both were platinums with executive package and the S80 had tech package w/ adaptive cruise control. They were phenomenal vehicles. Our current lineup is a 2023 XC90 T8 AWD Ultimate w/ Air & B&W, a 2013 C70 Platinum w/ Inscription pkg and a 2008 C30 2.0 custom order with every option but leather. My wife loves the 2023 T8 XC90 but I miss the comfort and the torque of our old 2009 XC90 V8. We had a 2018 XC90 T6 R-Design loaded to the max w/ p* and that was actually fun to drive. However, the 2023XC90 w/ google and the reengineered T6 powertrain was absolutely dull and boring. So we went with the T8. Its okay but I miss the R-Design spec. and believe the Volvo is moving toward a very boring future. I absolutely wouldn't replace the head unit because you will loose the Dynaudio customizations. Who needs CarPlay when you have the most customizable audio system ever factory fitted to a vehicle with integrated Dolby Digital surround w/ front AND rear equalizers? Its sad that the $3,200 B&W option in a post 2022 Volvo has removed any type of equalizer and balance/fader option. P.S. Please remove the Subaru badges and get a Volvo high mileage badge. The Subaru badges are for Volvo wannabees. You got the real deal here.

Your XC90 is WAY better than the new one. For the price of that new XC90, I’m taking a fully loaded BMW X5 40i with the M Sport Pkg instead. MUCH better car. Genesis GV80 Prestige (with the 6cyl motor) is a compelling option too for a few grand cheaper than the XC90 but the X5 is my cup of tea (I’m a BMW/Porsche guy tbf). I can’t imagine spending close to $90k on a XC90 when an Acura MDX Advance is $20k cheaper and the superior car. Only thing the MDX lacks is the acceleration of the XC90. I like the MDX Type-S too but I don’t appreciate low-profile tires on a family SUV as they go flat easily on bad roads and the standard MDX is proven to be really reliable from a mechanical standpoint. I can’t imagine wanting a new XC90 personally when so many other, BETTER, options exist. One thing I def appreciate however is your content!

We loved our P2 5cyl Volvos they were great vehicles. Last year I ran out and bought a 2022 and 2019 XC90 T6 after to my dismay I noticed on Volvo's website that they were all hybrids now which I do not want because I believe they will have serious reliability issues. I had R-Design steering wheels installed because my wife and I think the standard steering wheel looks funky and not very attractive and we think the split inlay rim steering wheels are just uncomfortable to grip. Volvo stupidly deleted exhaust tips for 2022 so I had to have those reinstalled. Before I even drove my 2022 and 2019 XC90 I had a total SW update performed and Polestar upgrade for more downshifting because for years the 8 speed transmission programming was so dumbed down and mindless it felt like you were being hurled to stops like a clown car in my opinion. I was always very surprised auto reviewers never seemed to notice and criticize this in SPA reviews.
SPA Volvos had brake issues and just finally revised pads to address premature wear and reoccurring pulsation that upset many customers that swore to never buy Volvo again in my opinion. However Volvo was years too late and should have had a service bulletin requiring dealers to lube pad backing to prevent brake noise. The lack of transmission programming when approaching stops made brake problems worse in my opinion. I feel like I went to war with Volvo for years on my Volvo related twitter account mynewvolvoexp making fun of brakes and transmission programming and would like to think I had some small part in putting pressure on Volvo to finally update transmission SW and brake pads. Even after getting the revised pads there was still grunting, groaning and barking when letting off the brake pedal from a stop and Volvo and dealers seemed totally clueless about this issue. I had to figure it out on my own and I believe it was because Volvo wasn't specifying SPA pad backing to be greased with brake lube which resolved this issue. I cannot understand why Volvo didn't figure this out and address this in testing. Volvo makes solid vehicles but does some stupid things in my opinion.
Sadly I believe Volvo has been driving away and alienating customers handing business to competitors that offer traditional non hybrid options while more focused on trendy culture and tech crap such as EV's and hybrids many people do not want. Most people that buy these hybrids don't even know what they are buying until they have reliability issues in my opinion. I believe Volvo has been trying so hard to please the wrong people that would never even buy a Volvo anyway while alienating long time loyal customers like myself and even potential new customers in my opinion. I have been trying to get through to Volvo executives on my website mynewvolvoexperience and through my twitter account. I used to see newer Volvos all over the road in California and now I hardly see any while I'm seeing competitor vehicles with non hybrid options such as the MDX now all over the road. I am seriously concerned about Volvo's future because I feel they have been driving away business.

I much prefer the prev generations. I hv a 2012 xc70 w 3.2 - its been flawless - no issues whatsoever w over 150k on clock and plenty of power w 6cyl- more reliable without the turbo. I had 08 v50 - 5cyl nonturbo - also ran flawless - only issue later was a/c leak. Had 2013 s80 w turbo also but got rid of it bc transmissin was sketchy and wanted more storage. Id never get the newer xc90 bc its a 4cyl - so effing lame. W bullshit turbos and/or superchargers makes them less reliable. All to just improve a few mpgs. Only good thing about new gen is the seats are as good if not better than older seats. U cant beat vovlo seats - designed by orthopedists from what I've heard.

I’d also look at the belt/pulley’s as the engine is running and listen for weird noises. Make sure the transmission shifts properly in all gears, and its hard to really test the AWD, but accelerating from a stop will kinda help figure it out.
