- Lecture-17: Types of Cement | सीमेंट कितने प्रकार के होते हैं? by Dr. K Mohan.
Dr K Mohan is an internationally renowned and an acclaimed cement scientist. He is a former Director General of National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM).
He holds a Ph.D. degree in Cement Chemistry from University of Aberdeen, Scotland, U.K.
There are abut 21 types of cement, some of which are not covered under BIS i.e., Bureau of Indian Standard Specifications.

Each of the type of cement will now be discussed in brief
1. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
• Classified into 3 grades namely: 33 grade, 43 grade and 53 grade OPC depending upon the strength of cement at 28 days.
Ordinary Portland Cement 33 Grade (OPC - 33)
• Produced by grinding clinker with 4 - 5 % gypsum.
• According to BIS, the minimum compressive strength of 33 grade OPC shall be 33 MPa at 28 days.
• Presently, not made.
Applications:
• Used for general low - risecivil construction works under normal environmental conditions.
Ordinary Portland Cement 43 Grade (OPC - 43)
• OPC - 43 grade cement is a moderate strength Portland Cement.
• It is made by grinding clinker of C3S content about 50% with 4 - 5 % gypsum.
• Performance improvers like limestone, fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag up to 5% can be used along with clinker and gypsum.
• According to BIS, the minimum compressive strength of 43 grade OPC shall be 43 MPa at 28 days.
Applications:
• Used for general civil engineering construction works including residential, commercial and industrial buildings like roads, bridges, flyovers under normal environmental conditions.
• Pre - cast items such as blocks, tiles and pipes.
• Non - structural works such as plastering and flooring.
Ordinary Portland Cement 53 Grade (OPC - 53)
• OPC - 53 grade cement is a highstrength Portland Cement.
• It is made by grinding clinker of C3S content about 53 - 55 % with 4 - 5 % gypsum.
• Performance improvers like limestone, fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag up to 5% can be used along with clinker and gypsum.
• According to BIS, the minimum compressive strength of 53 grade OPC shall be 53 MPa at 28 days.
Applications:
• Used for high - rise buildings, bridges, flyovers, chimneys where high grade cement is normally required.
• Pre - cast concrete items such as paving blocks, tiles and building blocks.
• Pre - stressed concrete components and runways, concrete roads and bridges.
2. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)
• Manufactured by grinding clinker, gypsum and fly ash (15 - 35 %).
• Low heat of hydration.
• Higher resistance to chemical attacks (attack of sulphates and chlorides).
• Imparts long term strength and durability.
• Higher water tightness and low permeability.
• Ultimate strength is more than OPC.
• Reduces alkali aggregate reaction.
• Low shrinkage on drying.
Applications:
• Used for general construction works and especially suitable for works in aggressive environmental conditions.
• Water - retaining structures, marine works, mass concreting such as dams, retaining walls and sewage pipes.
3. Portland Slag Cement (PSC)
• Manufactured by grinding clinker, gypsum and granulated blast furnace slag (25 - 70 %).
• Low heat of hydration.
• Increased resistance to attacks of sulphates and chlorides.
• Imparts long term strength and durability.
• Higher water tightness and low permeability.
• Reduces alkali aggregate reaction.
Applications:
• Used for general construction works but mainly preferred for construction of marinestructures and in coastal areas where excessive amounts of chloride and sulphate are present.
• It can also be used for mass concrete works.
4. Composite Cement (CC)
• Manufactured by grinding clinker, fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag and gypsum.
