- we grabbed these 2 split window buses 2 weeks ago, they are too far gone to save and will be used to fix up other buses, but one still had an engine in it, lets see if it will still run.

There is something so strange, hearing that little motor puttering away from out of that pile of scrap and rust that used to be a mini bus. Kind of puts a smile on your face.

I absolutely love it when you get these old engines running. Clearly this one is very strong and has plenty of life left in it. I'd bet that this Bus got junked because of the rust in the body -- looks like it would've been quite unsafe to drive with half the frame gone like that.

You bought that back... New carb, new coil. new cap, new points... A couple new wires... Glad the compression was OK. More than a little genius. Entertaining video!!! watched it twice! LOL!

But seriously, those engines were/are brilliant, tough as a nail. So impressive engineering but for the dreaded 3th cylinder. Awesome.

Thanks to your videos I was able to fix my lawnmower yesterday.
LOL same here. We watch stuff like this and the lawnmower fix becomes a tiny little job of no importance... new blades to replace the 10 year old ones in my case.

It's hard to find an old Air Cooled VW engine that won't at least start,given the correct attention. I've run VW's for 50+Years. Great Video!!

We did similar to a van that was sat for 29 years,that engine is now in another van and happily running around England and will be going to an event in Europe soon,all we had to do was service the engine after its initial start and it runs great,keep the videos coming Mustie please.

@@nicolashoyt5341 anything with electronic ignition is going to be fine. If your car is made this century you don't have anything to worry about (well, apart from the confuser which controls everything failing!).
Impressive failure though, pity it wasn't caught on camera. I've never seen one "pop" either, they normally just go open circuit.

I wonder if that rotor is why is was junked 40 years ago? Caused a no-start that they couldn't diagnose.
That frame "repair" was obviously done before it was junked so that tells us it rotted out early in life.
I recognize those points, Blue Streak, the best you could buy many moons ago.
I like the ventilation of that bus, who needs pop out windshields when you can just remove the whole front end?

The procedure also kept me on pin points.. anxious, and I was yelling “switch on the coil supply” now you know how I was anxious! Well done..I had already known the result even before you stated the procedure! Your patience is always admired. Danke.

This video has inspired me. My buddy lets me hunt a 400 acre patch of ground that he grew up on but doesn’t do much with these days. In the middle of it sits an old VW that hasn’t run in the 15 years I’ve known home and probably for at least 15 years prior to that, maybe more. I’ve asked him a time a two what he’s ever going to do about it and he just kind of blows it off. I think I’m going to ask him soon if he’ll let me tinker with it to see if I can get it running. Been about 25 years since I wrenched on a VW.

It's unreal to see/hear that engine run after sitting for so long!
I'll now remember to turn off the key of my old points-ignition bike after seeing that coil...
It's not a problem on modern cars (i.e. pretty much anything not owned by Mustie!) with breaker-less ignition, but on old ones where there are contact breakers, if they happen to be stopped in the closed position, the coil will sit there and heat up.
Even my old (1981) bike has electronic ignition, so safe from this issue at least!
@@juststeve5542 well I own quite a few bikes from the 1970s that uses points ignition (Ex. Kawasaki B1 & Suzuki GK family bikes)
One of them fried a coil a while back and I wasn't aware of this at the time
Now I know why...
張凱翔 you can buy a solid state ignition module and eliminate the possibility of that happening.

@@jamesshanks2614 changing to CDI means that I have to swap out the whole dynamo assembly and lose electric start, so I'm still thinking about it.

I had a 1972 Window Van...I am SO IMPRESSED with you getting this old guy (yes, VW vans are male!)...running...I had the first year of the '411' 1700 cc motor...synchronizing the two carbs was a pain in the rear...I had a hair-dryer motor hooked up under the dash to some 3" plastic that ran back to the heat exchangers...to get a BIT of defrost heat (Toronto!)...So good to hear that old motor running...I think I might get me an old VW van again and enjoy the 0-60 times somewhere NORTH of 20 seconds...Oh, yeah....

Wow. 40 years later. That's awesome. If that old motor can run, so can my old '52 8n. I'm back to work.
I used to have one of those 8N's Worked like new but had a habit of just dying for no reason. Finally found out the coil was going bad in it. Replacement fixed the problem. Sadly, when my precious gift from God that was my wife passed away I sold the 8N and all of the implements, including a new trailer I had bought for it. Now I wish I had kept it.
@@richardcline1337 Mine has been great. Its a 52, bought it in 93. and have used it every year since, but this year I'm putting some work in it. Needs a water pump, so while i have the hood off I'm repainting it, new tune up kit, fixing the headlights, changing all the fluids, etc. I expect it will outlast me. My condolences on the loss of your loved one.

Unbelievable! I don't know who's more impressive; the VW engineers who designed this stuff in the first place, or you Mustie for being able to resurrect it all these decades later. You remind me a bit of Scotty from Star Trek - you are a miracle worker, you seem to be able to turn rusty broken junk into functioning engines, vehicles, components, mopeds, tractors, fork lifts... ..... what can't you do? I love watching you do what you do.

That is what most dogs do. I found my best friend abandoned by the side of the highway one night. For ten years she was the very best dog that I have ever had. Imagine , someone had throw away a pure bred Rottweiler ! She was a great dog !

I guess it's not as bad as with modern, or capacitive discharge ignition systems, but it still hurts like hell!
Nice destruction of the coil, I've never seen one pop before like that. Pity it wasn't on camera. I was not expecting that. When I first saw the condition of that engine I was sure it was going to be the remains of the muffler that were going to blow apart first!

I find it both fascinating and awesome that a piece of machinery sitting in a junkyard for 40+ years and was tossed around like a football still turns over with little effort and no extra parts. They don't make em like they used to. Obviously it will require some effort to start it up. But with Mustie on the case it WILL run, I'm sure of it. I find the engineering of those engines to be quite good from everything I've seen on this channel.
