I totally agree with your sentiment and think it's one of the biggest things keeping me from being a diehard NASCAR fan like I used to be. More points for wins, top 5s, and leading the most laps would have tweaked a system that made for a great sport.

    I don't understand, why when Jimmie Johnson finished fifth in the standings in his debut season with 3 wins, and Ryan Newman came sixth with one win in his, why did Ryan Newman win Rookie of the Year in 2002?

    • @heathmcconnell3901
      @heathmcconnell3901 Месяц назад +1

      It's been a long time since I've read exactly how this works. But from what I remember, Rookie of the Year is in part determined by a certain number of "best" finishes (I'm wanting to say somewhere between 17 and 20). Ryan Newman had more "best" finishes than Johnson, but also more DNFs and "worst" finishes. As such, his greater "worst" finishes put him lower in points; but the "worst" finishes didn't count for purposes of determining "Rookie of the Year".
      As a simplified example, suppose Rookie 1 had finishes of 1st, 40th, and 10th; and Rookie 2 had finishes of 2nd, 15th, and 14th. In terms of points, Rookie 2 will be higher due to Rookie 1's 40th place finish in race 2. However, Rookie 1 finished higher than Rookie 2 in 2 out of 3 races (race 1 and race 3). And this is what counted for purposes of Rookie of the Year.
      Plus, a portion of it is also determined by a panel that takes into account the rookie's conduct with officials, track conduct, media acumen, and personal appearance.

      @@heathmcconnell3901 it seems very bizarre to me, especially as Johnson was the first rookie to even lead the points standings in NASCAR history

    • @seannolan9857
      @seannolan9857 Месяц назад

      Newman had 14 top fives compared to Johnson's 6, and 22 top tens to Johnson's 20. He also led in more races. Only reason Johnson beat him in points (by only seven points) was because he had two more top 20's. Until sometime in the playoff era, rookie points were different from regular points, and were based on your best 15 races. Which IMO produced better results. Under the current rules Dale Earnhardt would have lost ROTY to Joe Millikan and Alan Kulwicki would lose to Michael Waltrip.

    Its weird 2 think that every year that in with a 2 had a great championship battle that ended kinda of anticlimactic. 1992 went from 6 to 2 in the first half the race. 2002 went from a 5 car fight to just tony by seasons end. 2012 had a great 3 car fight untill ism where boyer and Johnson Championship bid went away, 2022 was one of the closer(on paper) championship 4's only for logano to dominate from start to finish with bell and Elliott taking themselves out of contention. 50 or more percent of the field scoring is a lot... probably because I grew up with points being for the very best in F1. Top 8 in a field of usually 22
