Thanks again Bomberguy, as I mentioned before C.W.A. Scott was my Great Uncle, I have just finninshed reading a new publication entitled Mildenhall to Melbourne (the world's greatest air race) written by Stuart McKay, it is a well presented book and jam packed with details and technical info if your interested, it a good read, and now re- watching this video I understand alot more about what My Great Uncle and all the competitors atchieved, Great !

I have just finished reading this book myself and it is indeed a fantastic read. I’ve also read a biography of Roscoe Turner another personal hero of mine. Fantastic times with the Thompson Trophy races, Schneider Trophy and of course the 1934 race from Mildenhall to Melbourne.

That DH.88 Comet is such a beautiful, streamlined art deco design. Would love to see it next to a Delahaye 165 or something similar.

Chochran's Gee-Bee is preserved in Lerdo, City, Mexico (next to my birth place), in a museum dedicated to Francisco Sarabia, the pilot who broke records with it, and perished in the aircraft in Washington, 1939.

0:54 - The big four funneled liner is the RMS Olympic. It's the Titanic's sister ship. Funny it shows up here, isn't it?

At 1:36 is a shot of all DH88 Comets together, very rare indeed and would give much to see more of this filming. IMHO it is at Hatfield where they are being readied for flight to Mildenhall to start the MacRobertson Race. Many Thanks.

Green, Black, Red. Red one won it

Second, with Passengers, was a Douglas DC2. Had it not gotten bogged down at a landing at Perth it would have come first. The DH 88 is a marvel of beauty, and the mother of the DH98 Mosquito, but that an airliner could have beaten the two other DH 88´s and come second overall says it all about how advanced Douglas were in the mid 1930´s and what a center of excellence the area around LA had become (Lockheed, Douglas, Northrop, North American, to name but some)

They actually got lost in a storm and landed in Albury NSW. Not Albany WA. I believe they still would have won as the township literally used manpower to pull the plane free the next morning!

Roscoe Turner was my great-uncle (my grandfather was Abe Turner, his younger brother). I have several pictures of Uncle Roscoe that I enjoy looking at and telling my children about.

The British had hoped they could have taken all three places, but the other two had broken down and fell behind. The upset was two large American transport airplane took the second and third place. The irony is DeHavilland, Boeing and Douglas faced off once again into the Jet Age.

You can see in the Comet the lines of the future Mosquito fighter...

One of the planes from this race crashed in a field at Templestowe, Vic. Australia. My Grandfather and Uncle were near working on their orchard and heard the crash. They arrived a few min. later and found the pilot dangling upside-down by his harness. He was ok. My Dad arrived a couple of hours later on his way home from school aged 8. The wreckage was removed for inspection, minus the prop, which for some unknown reason arrived at their orchard, and remained there for many years. Dad now 88

not sure, but the ship in 1:07 seems to be RMS Asturias, wich in october 1934 was in Southampton, due to re-enter in service after a refit in Belfast

      Hello,
I'm an Italian architectural engineer engaged in a project for the conservation of the monument dedicated to the aviator Leonida Robbiano.
His plane, a Breda 33 crashed in the bay of Bengal on April 15 1933 during the attempt to break C.W.A. Scott’s record from Lympne (8th april 1933) to Darwin (Australia).
I searching for more material on this subject and I think I will be more lucky researching abroad. Do you have suggestions?

Why dont you contact HARS , the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society in Wollongong, Australia. Its a big organisation and they may be of help in some way.

    Hi Jimmy,
Your Great Uncle and my Father were in the same race! We have some (limited) pictures but if you don't have it already track down a copy of The Great Air Race by Arthur Swinson. It is too old for an ISBN but the SBN is 304 93151 9.

Narrator calls the Gee Bee Q.E.D. a "Northrop monoplane" His descendant no doubt works for the Military channel where they always screw stuff up.
