500 kmh and 100 hp. Beat that!
an RC sail plane can go 500mph with zero HP
@@OnceShy_TwiceBitten The only uses for RC planes and drones are as poor mans missiles, recon and possibly smuggling. A bullet can go 3000 kmh with zero horsepower.
FieldSweeper only diving ...
@@OnceShy_TwiceBitten what one? im going to buy it.
@@apuuvah ..............and whatever youve ingested ill take some of that too LUL where do you idiots get your bullshit from
This just happened this weekend. I live less than two miles from the airport and have been watching and hearing aircraft flying around all week, today with the races over many aircraft are flying out, some going over My house.
Love the idea of this and want to see it for Yourself, then by all means GO!
Reno isn't expensive, get a room at one of the casinos a few days before, get the full admission including pit pass and head over a few days early to get to see everything up close. Talk to the mechanics and pilots, look at everything. Nothing else like it in the world anymore!
Got a chance to work with Jon a few times years ago. Such a smart yet down to earth guy. It was a real pleasure and great opportunity to learn from him. Hope he is still doing well & going strong! Thanks Jon!
Omg claskssons hair!
Afro Clarkson
Yes he had.

300+mph from 100hp. extraordinary!
except that he isn't pulling 100 hp out of that engine, more like 200 hp at the rpm they are running
Hmmm🤔
@@epeon7 I don't think that that's how it actually works, considering that power=thrust×velocity
@@martijn9568 David Norris is right. With the much higher than stock RPM's and the shorter prop, along with induction and exhaust mods allowed, they are making almost double the output. I know you think that were BS'ing you, but check it out with the guys who own and race these F1 planes and they will verify what were saying.
Well, all the racers seem
To think they are running about 145hp +/-5hp or so.
If you leveled off at sea level, and let the engine rev out beyond 4,500rpm, and reached 312mph with al that ram-air effect, then yeah they are probably closer to 170 or 180hp... vs the stock 95hp (rated 100, barely makes 93-95 in reality).
He set a speed record in the aircraft at OSH IIRC and it was not over 300mph.
Compare Clarkson's hair and waistline to recent GT episodes!
LordGroyper accurate lol
He's pregnant, try to have some respect....
@@sstearns2 He's been pregnant for a long time. Must be gestating an elephant.
Turn left- that's very American

He didnt get it..lol
The Brits invented it.
Just watch a horse race.
Do they turn right south of the equator?
If you have never seen or been to an air race. GO see RENO ! . sit in the stands and enjoy one of the great things in this country !........ IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH.
Robert Lafnear until they crash into you
REALLY ? ....... I'll be flying IN THE RACE... lets see if that happens.
500lb with an engine? Goddamn that's very light, love the double horizontal stabilizers too
That's not far from my hometown. I still drive over the hill to watch those every year now and they are amazing. Not just to watch but the aircraft they have on display is phenomenal too. Just hearing those planes in that clip of one of the heats brings back so many memories.
We raced with Jon at his very first air race. He did very well. Got a picture of him receiving his trophy. He looked like a junior high kid when he got that trophy & a peck on the cheek from the girl handing them out! A couple years later he designed his first cowling & he gave us a copy for our cassutt. Nice guy...
this song is perfect...
Love it! Cant wait to go some day. Gonna be at Oshkosh next week though!
EYYYY, the airshow here in Oshkosh just ended tonight i think, i live right by it, tons of cool planes flying over lake Michigan the past few days. hope you enjoyed it
It was great!

Hi there ColdFusion

"This is the fastest of the lot - the winged Williams". Oh, how times have changed.
Caught me off guard
Awesome! I remember years ago asking my dad why there wasnt any airplane racing. And now ive discovered this video completely by accident :).
infinite number of lines but just one turn hehehehe how's the race going Bob? THEY'RE STILL TURNING LEFT!!!
RIP Galloping Ghost.
I didn't knew this episode of Top Gear and my favorite formula one race!
Hi
I'm a car guy and I completely agree with you, YOU'RE FLYING! You're not used to the hard road that we have become so accustomed to.
I go to Reno every year to see these. Watch all the video of this you want, NOTHING in this world will prepare you for the shock you will experience the first time you see planes race. It is surreal.
“the winged Williams”. That didn’t age very well.
The winged Ferrari
What plane was that?
@@joshjack6127Jon Sharp’s “Nemesis” F1 racer.
2:57 bless up airman!
I used to race in the formula one class, I flew a highly modified LongEazy. I hope to race again this year when I'm done rebuilding.
@kirk2425 I'm glad to hear it! Hopefully that will allow the racers to use those rather than the genuine "numbers-matching" antique engines. A similar thing was happening with the 426 Hemi, which was produced in limited numbers. They were getting hopped up to the balls, with drag-racers and tractor-pullers burning through original blocks like corn chips. But now you can get a 426 Hemi, brand new in aluminum, from Mopar, allowing the originals to be enjoyed in non-competition cars.
I agree that the mustang is not "half british", however the RAF was able to improve the Mustang's high altitude performance by replacing the original engine by a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.
This was eventually the reason of the huge success of the P-51 in WWII.
strega and dago red was built in our shop in Bakersfield, ca. . back in the earlier years these two planes has broke records. strega just was painted just before the air races in reno and when they flew strega to reno the paint was still little wet. lol my faverate plane is strega.
You can tell how heavy those WWII birds are in comparison to the F1 planes. The WWII birds need like 5000 HP to do 500-600 mph vs 300 mph on just 100 hp.
I think this might be my favorite top gear clip; planes are more fun than cars IMO. it would be cool if they had some sort of aircraft review show. Top Prop? Haha
It fits🤣🤣🤣🤣
god, those are some gorgeous planes
Well, planes are just better than cars. And that's a rock fact
Though not for your city commute
Pilots have a phrase I you need to go far go by car .The other one is the hundred dollar burger .You fly somewhere buy a burger and fly home !cost. .....you got it !
More aero
The express of those people in the croud are priceless !
My first racing plane I've seen was Sawbones at my first airshow where Sierra Sue II is based.

“the winged Williams” - so it finishes in last place?
Nighthawk0077, they still run the Formula races at Reno/Stead, as well as the big boy unlimited racers. Redbull is a completely separate entity, and most Reno Air Race fans find the Redbull Air Races boring.
what kind of race was this - the pilot he interviewed said the fastest plane there does 310 or 312 - does the unlimited race let you use any engine etc - i would love to learn to fly them
Mustang 1204 - I've read some reports from the pilots of the FW-190. They hated it... They said the ME-109 was much better, I'll never fly either of them so I won't know...
I'm kicking around a turboed Honda Vtec in a Stretched BD-5...
I live in Reno and I never thought about the air races that Mitch until I looked at it from an outside perspective
I went to the races one year, it was amazing. But, by the end of the races, you get real tired of looking UP
The solution i use us is just reclining camp chairs
he didn't say it was laterial g's, he said they pull 6 g in each turn
if theirs a car that can make 4 gs ( other then a crash) im quite certain it would at least have proper seats
Which ones are faster? This ones or the Red bull fighert?
:57; a La-7 Lavochkin!? Nice. Those little buggers are pretty cool, but they'll never be like a 2,000 HP warbird. Thank god for air racing, otherwise there wouldn't be anything to DO with all these old planes but look at them. This way, they're still doing battle, in a sense.
I second the Corsair
Hey, we applaud you! Don't be pissed.
what is the name of the plane at 1:46? i would like to know
Yes, the FW 190A was quite a shock to the British and their Spitfire in 1941.
Wouldn't that be wonderful if somehow they could make a replica of that FW-190D-13 that they have in Arizona?
I'm tired of seeing new-build Yaks...I want to see the Luftwaffe of WWII fly again.
Btw, my brother got a ride in the beautiful P-51D Ridge Runner back in late April.
Modified Yakovlev Yak-11 trainer. Instead of the orignal 700 hp 9-cylinder radial, it has a 1,400 hp pratt & Whitney 14-cylinder radial.
@yoshyoka The slalom style of the Red bull Air Race is carried out in completely different planes like german extras which have been specifically constructed to perform as aerobatic or lightweight racing planes they are made of carbon fiber composites and can perform tighter turns. The machines used in the Reno Air race are mostly souped up fighters from the WWII and Korean War era, P 51 Mustangs, Thunderbolts, Hellcats Hawker Sea Furys with radial engines. They are extremely strong and fast but compared to an extra 230 they turn like a schoolbus, because the huge engines are very heavy and produce a lot of torque that plus a construction of aluminium hide over a part steel skeleton makes them sluggish. aerobatics planes on the other hand mostly feature lightweight air cooled boxer engines wich react a lot more sensitive to the throttle and don't produce as much torque as a Rolls Royce Merlin or a Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine.
Souped up Sea Furies?... Good god why would you want to make the most powerful and fastest piston engined airplane even faster... that's legitimately scary... That plane is a beast...
The old warbirds are just gorgeous though, nowhere near as agile as the modern stunt/racing planes sure but no matter how astonishing the performance of the new planes is they do not have that extra sex and "X factor" appeal a Mustang, Spitfire or Fw-190 has.
DavidELD
Well, in case of the Sea Furies they did not modify the engines afaik, but if I remember correctly they altered the aerodynamics slightly by modifying the engine cowling, the canopy and trimming the wings a little. The mods are just marginal to shear off a few fractions of a second in a race. BTW there is a limit to what speed you can achieve in a prop driven airplane, because the air resistance increases immensly the closer you get to the speed of sound and the propeller disk itself is the main limiting factor because at speeds over 800 kilometers per hour it practically becomes a giant airbrake. That is why no prop could ever go supersonic. The first airplane to exceed Mach 1 in horizontal flight was the rocket propelled Bell X 1 wich had no prop and a leading wing edge you could have shaved with
Gotcha, still I knew someone who died at the controls Sea Fury. It is a big, nasty mean sonofabitch. Those Sea Furies could probably outmaneuver the earlier jet planes. It's too much plane to handle if you're not a military pilot. Hope these racers are. These planes were designed to kill and destroy after all. You respect them like you respect a damn Great White Shark.
Actually yes there are sensors that tell the plane that the pilot is not responding. So siren like alarms go off in the cockpit until the pilot turns them off. Very cool really! It uses laser rangefinders to draw a 3D image of whats ahead so it can fly low while not hitting things!
@yakovlev3a
The problem is that once you start getting much faster than these guys it starts taking exponentially more power. Take a look at the Nemesis NXT, that thing can go around 420 on 350 horsepower. Both were designed by the same guy, and both have gone nearly undefeated. Or in the case of the F1 here, totally undefeated.
@ezeflierid I have to admit that - after looking at the Reno Air race course records the some of the single lap speeds, especially during qualifying, have steadily increased over the past 40yrs. Rare Bear peaked @ 495.03mph and Strega hit 507.10mph with September Fury topping out @ 478.51mph.
However it should be noted that all of these top speed runs were reached on the 67mile qualifying course lap and not the 9 mile lap.
Formula 1 uses O-200 engines with are 100 HP at sea level and at the factory redline of 2700 rpm. During the race they run them at 4000+ rpm which is well over 100 HP.
If you had taken the time you spent writing your reply doing a tiny amount of research you would see that I’m right. Try it….
Watching this after just getting back from the last ever Reno Air Races in 2023.
this is beaufifullllllllllllllllllll...
True unless you are using fractiles, then you could have a limited space but unlimited lines.
I live in Reno so the planes fly over my house lol it wakes me up!
the song is, Underworld - Born Slippy Nuxx
dear santa ...
whats the name of that yellow one?
parasitic drag on an aircraft < parasitic drag on a car + rolling resistance
Clarkson + born slippy = euphoria
It's not a spectator sport then.
Supersonic flight can't do sharp turns.
At mach 1, to do a complete horizontal (or vertical) loop takes 2.4km and 22 seconds.
(at 9G)
I think the Reno Air Races should add a new class that's dedicated to supersonic aircraft. Bring in all the big military forces and have them race their Flankers, Eagles, Mirages, Typhoons, etc. That should add a whole new dimension to the game.
They would need a much longer course and a lot more fuel due to burning more fuel at low altitude. Jet aircraft on afterburner are very hungry machines.
@@jamesg4534 I'm fine with moving the race over to the Grand Canyon or something for the jets. Those would be the most righteous sonic booms ever.
Judging by Jeremy's hair I'd say late 90s - Early 00s
nice seeing cloud dancer
@tomburley I beg to differ. Rare Bear has turned a lap at 499mph.. Dago Red has turned a lap at 512.. Not quite 540, but within a rather close percentage.
wow, that would be so much fun
Wow great song!thank you :-)
in the Red Bull air race they get in trouble if they pull more than 12 - and lol it happened at the last round
one other thing, the F-22 airframe can handle 40+Gs! And if you black out...it will keep flying and avoiding stuff until you wake up! All the while trying to wake you up!
I think Jeremy should bring that look back!
Can you tell me the name of the song at 1:26??????thanks
If I entered that, I'd use a Soviet Yak-.9. The first piston engine fighter to shoot down a jet.
Was that even before a P-51 shot down an ME-262?
About 6 weeks before.
OIC....thanks. :-)
Larry Phischman The Yak-9 isn'T quick enough. Take an La-9, it has laminar flow wings and should allow for higher Top Speed. The WWII Jet kills are worthless anyways as they shot them down on landing, no real challenge there.
a default Yak-9? one of those would be completely outran by one of the modified P-51s
Personally i'd take something like the rare bear i love the F8F
@metalraider187 Not at any altitude. Max speed of the P51H (fastest versio) is 487mph @ 25,000ft, with the Sea Fur running @ 460mph and the Bearcat @ 455mph - all need to be above 20,000ft to achieve these speeds. Fast they are, but not 500mph + speeds....unless in a dive.
However, 350mph-400mph at 1,000ft at Reno sure looks impressive and sounds GREAT
Who remembers the film planes
can i know the name of the plane at 1:28?
thanks
please get that apple watch commercial out of my face
POWER!!!!
What's the plane at 1:20 ?
@commandro Most of the pilots and crew work for places like The Skunk Works at Edwards AFB, thats where Jon Sharp has works for many years and he has the access to all the wind cheater disigns and wind tunel testing.
Could anyone help me out with the band and name of the song that starts at 1:25???
0:59 is that a Lavochkin LA-7?
didnt the merlin engine get scrached after it was too slow, or am i thinking the other way??
Any one no the name of the song that plays from about 1m 23s video showing yellow F1 rear engined plane.
No way! I didnt know Air races where real!
Oh yeah, they're real. Over the years, they've added more classes. Case in point: the jet class. In the jet class, you're racing around the circuit at a little over 500mph using a mix of old Czech L-39s and even older straight-winged jet fighters (DeHavilland Vampires, P-80 Shooting Stars, etc).
Incredible
Whats the yellow one called?
Fast.
Faster than stink.
The Unlimited Class is the equivalent of Group B rally racing
they should make a figure 8 course for destruction derby stages XD
name of the song at the beginning??
what song was that at tthe beginning of this vid??
can you tell me the name of the song arround oo.30 sec plsssssssssssssss
What's the name of the song from 0:30?
Wow. That is cool!
Wow--Jeremy has rich curly hair! But then again, the F1 racer they show at 1:26 is Pushy Galore (actually, its relative the Miller special), which means this was made in the '90s. Also Jeremy mentioned "Sure, jets are banned"--the Jet class was inaugurated in the year 2000. Nice video!
Dude, see how the wing bend here at 2:16
HOW MUCH DOES THE YELLOW PLANE WEIGHT (1:40) ??? 500 OR 300 POUNDS??????????????
Well when you design a course around time trials, of course you're going to have more interesting stuff. The draw of Reno is everyone racing together for first to pass the checkered flag. It's just different is all.
underworld!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain it was on a Gate Crasher CD; called Jonah or something like that.
