my grandfather is Capt. Burnor. He won the first jet propelled air race "The Allison Trophy". He flew 520 miles at an average speed of 494 mph. Watch from the 1:40 to 2:30. He also was the first pilot to land a jet plane on the Monterey Peninsula. Proud of you Gpa!! R.I.P.
It is the same Galloping Ghost. Raced over a period of 60+ years, crashed, rebuilt, modified and tweaked. An unfortunate and tragic end for this historic racing aircraft.
Those were different times. There were two accidents in this race that aren't shown. One plane flew into the ground and the pilot was killed. And one pilot bailed out with the the plane crashing to earth and injuring a woman. In 1949 a racer crashed into a house killing a mother and her child. That was the end of the Cleveland Air Races.
I read Howard Hughs wanted to buy and race a German ME-262 WWll jet fighter in the all jet race but the government was afraid of negative press if he happened to win against America’s newest and best jet fighters.

Wow! I didn't know that they raced jets at Cleveland too. Thanks for posting! Real Aviation history here.
Awesome video, it's hard to believe that they used to run the air races up there in Cleveland. You could never pull something like that off today.

Those were the days. Pick up a surplus fighter for several thousand dollars, soup it up the best you can, and, hope for the best.

@2:40 - JATO to become standard equipment on commercial planes of the future.......LOLOLOLOL!!
The announcer sounded bored to death.
Totally different type of races than Reno, you’ll never see many of these planes flying in the modern air races. Would have been awesome to see.
