Until the Nuc is also repairable. I never was going to get a gaming laptop until I heard of the Framework 16 inch laptop which has an module (replaceable GPU). I am always afraid of buying an expensive machine with everything build soldered together preventing any easy repairs or any upgrades in the future.

Been running an Intel NUC 12 Extreme Core i9 for just about a year now. Lovely machine. No complaints. GTX 1060 in it along with 64GB 3200MT/s RAM and a 2TB Samsung PCIe 4 SSD sitting on the processor (not chipset) bus. Former machine was a tower I built with all the RGB stuff. That's still under my desk, powered off. The NUC sits on my desk, where I wanted it. Nice machine.

The 13th gen Intel NUCs are strong when it comes to CPU performance, but no a match for AMDs RDNA2 integrated graphics or better still a 7040 series processor with RDNA3 graphics. I was going to replace my 8th gen Intel NUC with i7 processor with Iris Plus 655 graphics, with a 13th gen Intel NUC Pro but as you said their price is high, so instead bought a Bee-link Ser 6 Pro with AMD 7735HS processor. This has 12 core RDNA2 integrated graphics, plus 2 HDMI ports, 2.5 Gbps ethernet port, USB-C USB4 (incl. eGPU support), 2x USB3.2 gen2 ports, 2x USB2.0 ports, audio in / out port, and an excellent cooling solution that includes a 2nd fan for the memory and SSD plus space for a 2.5-inch SATA drive, and all in a machined Aluminium case. I bought direct from Bee-link and for £539 it included 32 GB (dual channel) Crucial DDR5 4800 MHz RAM and 512 GB Micron PCIe4 NVMe SSD. Price has recently increased by £50, but the latest version replaces one of the HDMI ports with a Display Port. It also came with Windows 11 Pro installed, but I replaced this with Nobara 37 Linux - Gnome edition and use it for gaming. I am impressed with its performance; it is exceedingly quiet even with the fans running (unlike my 8th gen Intel NUC) and cost significantly less than a 13th gen Intel NUC Pro.

I've been using the Nuc8 gaming edition as my main desktop computer since 2018. It's both powerful, has support for many monitors - I use only 3x2K monitors - and it's portable, so I can put it in my laptop bag and take it to hotels when I'm on travel. It has served me very well these years, but it's starting to get a bit old, so it would be great if Intel could come up with something new that can replace it. Maybe this one can. I never do gaming, though.

Don't think I'd going gaming with Battlefield but I've had some success with other games that use a lot less resources like LOTRO. I'm a bit of a NUC fanboy, bought a NUC8 purely as a light alternative to a laptop. I was always plugging the laptop into a monitor so thought why try a NUC. When I bought my NUC10 I retired the NUC8 to be a VM host running 4x virtual machine under XCP-NG. I use the NUC10 to be my daily business pc, email, office, some video encoding. Thinking about upgrading again :)

Any idea why Windows did better than Linux on benchmarks? The usual "all supercomputers run Linux bro" line had me believe that Linux usually does slightly better on benchmarks.
I'd also appreciate stats on noise level in dBA (both under IDLE and LOAD). Looking forward to the AMD comparison as well 😀

I'll make sure to do a DB test in the comparison. Thanks for mentioning it. I just added the links to the Geekbench scores so you can get a better idea. It probably has to do with better intel drivers on the Windows side.

No laptop or mini PC should have soldered RAM, and thats what I really appreciate about NUCs. They use laptop hardware but keep the users right to repair and upgrade. I hope people buy these purely to show other companies like Apple that right to repair is something everyone wants.

Im already down this route, My main PC is a NUC 12 Extreme i7 with the A770, and its absolutely fine, But also i have last gens i5 4x4 nuc that im using with linux, probably going to put gnome on that, The thing is with the custom PC market being pretty boring for the moment, I dont think there is another option as flexible and as supported as the NUC lineup that you get a solid product that you can modify,

Just too expensive for what you get. It does make me wonder why the Mac Mini is so comparatively large. If Intel can cram this much into such a small box, I'm surprised Apple hasn't updated their Mini form factor to the Apple TV size.

I wouldn't buy this particular NUC because of the price, as someone else has said it's way cheaper to build yourself a better machine (and upgradeable) for less money. However, a lot of these NUCs end up in offices where conformity of hardware is important as well as desk space. That's where I got my old NUC that's currently sitting in a box at the other end of the house. I paid £50 for it second hand. It will play older versions of Minecraft and similar games (2D isn't a problem for it) but none of the more recent 3D games. I expect I would be interested in the NUC 13 in about 5 years when office IT departments are clearing out all their older kit for similar prices, and I'll welcome it then with open arms. 😉
