Also, since then, more recent BIOS updates (from MSI, at least) have become so large that they've had to drop support for the pre-Ryzen APUs, such as you bought. To get a newer supported (and improved) equivalent, you might try the Athlon 200GE or 3000G APUs.

I think we can all see the context of the video. Watching it now, 2 years later, it still all seems very reasonable to me. I was holding off upgrading my almost decade old i7 until the new Zen CPUs dropped precisely because the older Zen CPUs weren't measuring up. So I'd say don't worry about videos aging; they are what they are.
(Amusingly, the computer I replaced died soon after the new one arrived. I say "died" because it just wouldn't reboot one day, and I used that as an excuse to just move on over to Linux. For all I know I just needed to do a deeper power cycle.)

It's pretty amazing that we've learned that we have to make sure the BIOS is up to date with new CPUs in order to work. It's the first thing I check anymore.

As a Technician in a different field I know we all have a different route or we`d be robots. Being the nerd that I am, and not a business man who doesn't need or want to waste his time unnecessarily, I note that the existing BIOS version 3203, which came out in Jan 2018, did appear in the CPU compatibility list against the Ryzen 2400G & GE: the G came out in Feb 2018, whereas the 2600X [which is what I have] didn't come out until April.

@@whiplash7400 technically, yes, but that board is still actually in use. In addition, one of the benefits is that it's labelled to match the board, making it a doddle to plug the front panel into and then just plug that into the board. It's even keyed.

Its not as good as it should be, they have a habit of using pins that too small so the header cables easily fall off. Its also kinda problematic if your case doesn't use all the headers as you have loose pins lying around asking to short to the case.

Its interesting you mention the PSU as few people realise the changes in the ATX specification can be a real pain when trying to use a new PSU in an old computer. It may be better now thanks to LEDs and USB driving the 5V requirements back up again, but when CPUs first switched to a 12V header, PSUs designed for that didn't have enough 5V amps to work with older motherboards that ran the CPU VRM off 5V. (at least that's how I recall it)

There are advantages to having an oversized psu, they tend to be most efficient at about 50-70% utilization, so you can get better efficiency by having a oversized psu vs one that is just big enough. On top of that, because the psu is running at let's say 50%, there will be less heat, and less load in general, so you get less wear on the components, most likely resulting in longer life.

Looks similar to my problem. I'll see if I can download any needed update via my current (to be replaced with the build) Mac Mini.
Wild card: At first I got no fans, not even on the PSU. I put the open MoBo on its box and figured out I'd put the Ryzen 5 CPU in sideways. I'm hoping it's not damaged. The pins appeared OK... no force was used. I just lined up the triangle with what I thought was another triangle on the socket. I reset it and got a white LED on the MSI MB. I still haven't found out what that means. No speaker to make beeps, but no video at all. At least now the PSU, CPU and GC fans all work.
This is my first build since my last Win machine in about 1995. I went to Mac in about 2000. Now I'm a Linux guy. It's been OK on the Mini but that's starting to be too slow for what even browsers need these days. Wonder what info they're trading as I stare at a video or Facebook. Sometimes that HDD goes crazy!

Looking at the motherboard in this video. I checked the support page and looks like the first bios release was from early 2017. Latest bios thus far was late 2024. It supports all CPUs, including x3d like 5700x3d. So this motherboard has had support for almost 8 years thus far. AM4 has had quite the journey. And the fact that you can put a 5700x3d into this motherboard today and have gaming performance similar to an AM5 R7 7700 is pretty sickomode. pcie gen.3 VS gen.4 is really not a problem either. Especially when using graphics cards that has all 16 lanes. Even the ones with only 8 lanes shows very little difference. And for M.2 NVME you wouldn't notice the difference for regular use anyway. No wonder the 5700x3Ds are selling like crazy. LUL. Insane

Wonder how many customers took there systems back to the shop for refunds or took them to a dodgy shop where they would charge for a new board but only updated the bios or made them pay a lot more.. they do now notify about updating the firmware but back then I bet manufacturers had a nightmare with this.. good that some board support USB flash firmware updating especially when AMD are bringing out new generations CPUs and there no support for them in the firmware. good video... i actually was stumped watching the video until you shown the board's chipset .. i was thinking it was a dodgy reset switch just shorting all the time was my bet.. but when i saw the IO shield I had a shiver go down my back .. so hate them daft cut out on the panel like bloody razor blades too so sharp... anyway good video bit old but your videos are relaxing .. actually I watch a lot of videos and yours is more relaxing than Linus, JaysTwoCents ect lol i only watch 5 minutes of there and Evblogs too long but yours maybe because it reminds me of when I had a shop in UK and how its so similar. I had failed to notice there was a reason for the extra plastic parts sticking out to indicate how the 20-pin and 4-pin parts should be aligned together.

I used to always just run the PSU+CPU+CPU FAN only - no RAM, no graphics, no other wires/connections/monitor/drives, etc. except for 'beeper speaker' if one wasn't already fitted. Then listen for the beeps - if no beeps then CPU is not running - simple! Then feel CPU to see if warm. Once you get beeps, start by adding RAM, then graphics (if required), then boot hard disk, then rest of stuff. step by step until problem is found. It saves time in the end.

I have no plans for it at the moment... PSUs are more complicated than people think. A lot of folks parrot the "just replace the capacitors" line, but there's a great deal more than just caps that can go wrong, and many faults require you to reverse-engineer the switch mode controllers and then probe their outputs with a scope to check for anomalies... and it goes on. Generally not worth it when most PSUs are < $100.
