Leave it to the world's most resource-rich region to have a war where the only thing more divided than the country was the list of countries getting involved. Please pin my comment.
The SECOND CONGO WAR, Also called African great war.
The deadliest war in the world since ww2
For understanding it we need to come back in the first Congo war and Tutsi genocide in Rwanda.
In 1994 They were a genocide in Rwanda and civilians and soldiers hutu( who committed the genocide) flee to Congo so Rwanda decided to invade Congo for destroying them ( soldiers hutu ). In 1996 Zaïre ( past name if DRC ) was already about to collapse so Rwanda and Ouganda make an alliance with Kabila ( a congolese man, Mobutu's ennemis) and formed AFDL and take over Zaïre in 1997. That was the first Congo war.
After that in 1998 Rwanda, Ouganda and Burundi didn't want to go back but want to stay for stealing congo minerals, so Kabila the new president of Congo break their alliance and ask them to go back. So Rwanda, Ouganda and Burundi refused and declared war to DRC. Angola joined DRC for fighting firstly Unita who were supplied by Zaïre in the border. Namibia joined and Zimbabwe too( the other countries like sudan, CAR, South Africa and Tanzania were just political support, and logistics for Libya )
In 2001 the President Kabila was assasined and his son Joseph Kabila take the power and signed an armistice with Rwanda, Ouganda and Burundi. They go back but let's thousands of army groups in the eastern part who fight till today for the minerals. So for the congo the war never really ended.
Most of the causalities were civilians ( like 700 K soldiers and 5 M civilians)due to lack of food and health care in a country were disease like choléra and Ebola rife. Most soldiers weren't in the official army but were from army group like maï maï, RCD, FDLR And were child soldiers.
This is why they are still conflict in Eastern part of DRC
For more information, you can watch the video of @Armchair Historian, @Hurricane Hunter03 about this subject.
    I hope it's helpful.

Post Rwanda genocide the government that commited it was defeated and fled into the Congo. The victorious Tutsi backed a new government of Rwanda pursued and imposed a puppet government in Congo. That sums up the 1st Congo war.
The 2nd Congo war is when the puppet govenment revolted causing fighting to break out. More countries join in and other rebel groups join in.
Basically spliting into a three sided war Rwanda and allies (red on map); Congo and allies (Angola, Zimbabwe, etc. Blue on map);Uganda (yellow on map they initially backed Rwanda then split off).
Hope that helps it devolved into total chaos as multiple civil wars linked up

Because Rwanda was financed and armed by USA and some Europeans countries. ( Still today ). In same time Congolese army was really disorganized and the greatest part of officer didn't care about their duty. Last part is that Eastern part of Congo is lesser integrate and poorer than west so less defendable.

Most of causalities is actually civilians. They were like 300 k soldiers dead and 5 M civilians mostly Congolese.

@@JosuéBolamu That makes sense. But when this RUclipsr makes videos about ww1 for example he only includes military deaths. Just seems a bit weird, that he in some wars chooses all types of casualties and in others only uses military.

    • @JosuéBolamu
      @JosuéBolamu Месяц назад +2

@@Masv1pe the problem is that this war was a nightmare. There's no rules of protection of Journalist, women and children. The dead are not counted in the wars in Africa. and after the war the country was destroyed, they did not think to be interested in that but rather than rebuild. All this death were told by differents independent media who tried to count.
