Gardening Cart for those with Physical Challenges

- Hi and welcome back to The Kneady Homesteader channel. Today I wanted to share with you my gardening cart that I recently purchased for myself because.....well....my body really just needed it. Since our accident, with all of my physical disabilities aka challenges.....I just struggled. It was difficult and at times impossible for me to garden and do the things I wanted to do myself. On my own. Without needing help. I have Lymphedema in both legs (with pockets of swollen fluid that does not drain from my legs) due to not having a lymphatic system anymore to drain the toxic fluid from my legs, requiring me to elevate my legs several times throughout the day. It leaves my legs weakened, and I am unable to stand for too long as well as I am unable to sit for too long. It is a balancing act. So, I need to sit to garden. I also need something easy for my wrists and hands to move and maneuver because of my hand/wrist injuries. This cart has been a blessing and I have been able to plant my entire garden myself this year! It makes me cry thinking about how blessed I am to be able to be here, and garden, and what a gift this cart has been to my ability to be independent.

Oh my goodness I think you just showed me the perfect gift for my parents, I’m sure they would both benefit from this. My mum has had two knee replacements in the last 18 months and has chronic arthritis and my dad has terrible oedema in his legs and tendon issues that are very much hindering him. I have many ‘challenges’ with my health and Heather I am learning that if you can buy something that helps to bring you joy or just helps you do tasks you need to do, it is worth it, so do it!! So go easy on yourself, you do not need to justify the spend. So lovely to see you both in your garden. Thank you 🙏

I have my Father's garden seat that is very much like yours. It is green but not as fancy as yours. No basket and no handle. I still use it and treasure it because it did belong to my Dad.

you are so welcome!!!!! I tried using a big heavy duty stool, but I couldn't get up from It so I knew a milk crate wouldn't help me much either. I had to just bite the bullet and buy it....knowing I could always return it if it didn't help me.....best money I spent on this garden! This makes it so I can even sit while watering my garden, on nights my legs really hurt.
@@TheKneadyHomesteader I’m really looking forward to getting it. I’m getting older, and the years are beginning to catch up with me. First my back, and now my hips and knees. Over the past few years, it’s put more and more of the gardening on my son, and he works 6 days a week. So, I’d begun to think that this may be our last year gardening. Now, I know it’s not. We have 4 beds that need to be raised like yours, but the rest will be fine for now. ❤️
That is a great asset for your gardening. Lets face it we are not getting any younger and if that garden cart will help you to do what you want in the garden it’s worth every penny
Raised beds are wonderful!! Bad knees, shoulders, and back make bending painful and impossible for me. Now I can produce my own veggies!! We are blessed❤

Thanks Heather and sweet Mina! Looks like a very well thought out and designed garden cart. I broke down this year also and purchased one of the garden seats that you can sit on or kneel on. It works well for me for sitting, is sturdy, and well made. Got me back in the garden too! I forget exactly how the saying goes, but it says, you are never closer to God than when you are in a garden…. Continued blessings on you and your loved ones 🌻

I love your attitude! You will look for ways to still be able to do what you want to do! Being a paraplegic, for the last 46 years, I can totally relate! I had the Lord in my life too. Without Him everything would have been so much more difficult.

Oh Mina so nice to see you honey you are growing so fast. And what a great garden helper. Love that cart so happy it will allow you outside to garden and be safe. Love the garden boxes upgraded to the perfect height too. I would even appreciatte a cart like that my gosh, I am 61 and I have been out in the garden for about a week getting it ready. Taking a bit longer than normal....and my back is really feeling it. So hmmm. I might invest in one too. Your garden and trees and Matts Willow are looking so wonderful. I love the joy of watching everything proceed and grow too. It is so mentally satisfying. And I remember when you were sure you would never garden again and it was so sad. That cart is pretty neat. Budget conscious too, I just take an old moderately clean feed bag and a bucket with whatever I'm working with to the garden, lay the feed bag down, and sit or hands and knees on the bag. Your cart or those kneelers with raised bar sides that you can use for support would be awesome. Since my beds are as low as yours used to be, the feed bag works. I literally ask my guardian angel for help every time I go to my garden because of major trip potential. That has worked since I started that.
I have 1 of thoes and they are great!. I also waited for about 3yrs because they are on pricey side. I got on a sale and WORTH its money. I've a bad knee,back etc. It's a lifesaver. BLESS 🙏

I know that I couldn't just not give up on gardening! It truly is one of my passions but being disabled I could no longer get up and down. My sons built me custom raised beds and what a game changer!! I also have destroyed lymphatic system in my entire left leg and use the lymphedema pump to control the swelling. I took a well over a year to get the swelling under control but, oh my gosh what a game changer! Please look into it it made a world a difference and discomfort for me thanks he!!!!!!

Hi Heather. I have one of those little garden cart same color. My step son bought me after i had foot surgery on both my feet. From rheumatoid arthritis. And i have plates and pins in my ankles so it makes it hard for me to get up or bend down on the ground. And what a diffent that's makes i feel brand new using this cart,For gardening,pulling weeds. mobility issues get many of us. I'm certainly not immune. Just found out I have degenerative disc disease in the lumbar region (probably in the rest of my back too). One lady that bought a new scooter last year gave us her old one because parts are not easily available, so Tom brought it home for me. It was wonderful to get around the yard with, but I managed to finally toast the gears in the transmission so it doesn't run forward any more. But he is picking up the carcass of a little lawn tractor this afternoon to do a homebuilt electric "truck" for me that we can hitch a small wagon to. It should fit between the future raised beds we want to build, and make it easier for me to do animal chores and move everything around the yard.
Ok so Miss Mina is so adorable and the best demostrator! I have a garden bench thing that's flipable to kneel on. Yours is way better! So happy to see you back in the garden.
those are cool, and if I could get on my knees, I would have tried one of those! Some have pockets on both sides! I needed something a little more.....handicap helpful. hahaha I miss kneeling on my knees. :(

I use one when I pick my green beans. My back just can’t take all the bending over. Where I work they let me borrow theirs. Helps out a lot!

Next year I'm going to garden. This year, my honey is going to make my beds. Things are so expensive that it's baby steps. I'm so happy for you that you get to garden and your garden cart is awesome. Love you and love you Mina you were an awesome demonsrator.

I use a shower bench for my gardening. Lol
It wasn’t much help to me in the shower after a knee replacement. It’s GREAT as a garden bench! I refused to give up my gardening as well. I hope you have bountiful harvests this season. Your garden area is beautiful.
I just got mine a month ago (bad knees). Doesn’t have the cool basket or handle… those are very handy!
I understand being one fall away from being confined to a wheelchair for life. I'm just starting to garden again this year. The last storm took out my cherry tomatoes but the other plants seem to be doing just fine. I've got them in grow bags waiting to be transplanted later this week. Dad just helped me put together two more garden boxes out of scrap wood he was getting rid of. The thing about losing plants this early in the season is that there's still time to try again. I love your little cart.

Awwwww she’s the cutest assistant there is 🥰 but WOW she’s growing like a weed (a pretty one tho) lol that is an awesome thing to have and great for ppl with spine damage and bending is a bit much sometimes ! I’m so happy you found something to help because it’s one of the things that brings me joy and I think it’s good for our soul and our health to be out in the sun and gardening ! Those chickens tho … LOVE that big huge run !! I sure can’t wait until I have structures in place to get mine (hopefully next month) ! Keep posting updates it’s nice to see how it’s coming along ! I have to do raised bed gardens and also fully enclose them or animals will everything… expensive but isn’t it beautiful and convenient 🪴 💐 🌳 i have a feeling we may see her start her own channel in a few years ! This looks so good!! I have had 3 hip replacements and 7 back surgeries, so it would be nice. However, my gardens are on a slope, and it would be my luck I'd go wheeeee, down the hill. 😆

I would think it would scoot great! And it swivels! Of course you needed this garden cart. I think it is super important to have your phone with you at all times in case of emergency for safety. Here in TX we have to worry about snakes while gardening as well. It's so great you are still able to garden and your new improved raised beds are wonderful. Going out to my garden now!

Hey i have one of those gardening seats my aunt gave it to me mine is a john dear but doesnt have the pull stick but its a life saver for me, i am 62 and have arthritis in my back. I like to grow things that will vine up a trellis like a cattle panel so not so much bending, i can stand and pick and use my seat to pick the bottom. You will love your new seat.

UPDATE: I was able to get the blue one for a couple of dollars less than the green one…there was a discount on it. The accepted the order, so if they tell me later that it’s out of stock, I’ll let you know. I’m just wondering at the moment if they got a new shipment. Your garden is coming along beautifully! I had one of these carts in my greenhouse in Alabama. It was a great little cart, and so handy! I left it there for the family who bought our homestead :) Great model the too :D

Love more ideas like this! My challenge is our " garden " is traditional stone tiered beds. So little room for carts, chairs. But have to dig holes at my feet. Kneeling is hard with all the rocks!
