    Hi Frank, I enjoyed these topics very much. I completely agree that there is a huge tendency to over feed during the race season. I remember years ago when I followed a feeding plan that didn’t match the training plan. I was eager to win and found a cookie cutter feeding plan. Definitely a few races where I got lucky, but I saw the biggest difference when I understood the art of feeding. Hope all is well.

    Hello. I have a few questions
    1. Can we use corn for long races if use how and when
    2. During moulting when our pigeon don't fly much . so can we use oily seed and protein and carbohydrates seeds.?
    3. We don't have access to barley and paddy rice . What else can we use on non training day?
    4. On training day what seed should we use for feeding . Oily or carbohydrates . Shall we feed them before training or on end of training day?
    Thanks

    • @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons
      @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons  Год назад +4

      Corn is not your best choice. Use fat seeds for long races.
      During molting a good high quality feed with about 15% protein. I use Versele Laga Champion during the molt with plenty of minerals.
      You would have to measure feed and not feed too much if you cannot get barley or paddy rice. It will be more difficult to get bodyweight right without barley but it can be done with perfect amounts feeding once a day.
      I do not change feed after training unless they fly more than 75 minutes or even 90 minutes. You can add more fat seeds should they have a long training. Most of the time they are on the light mix.

  • @brucecarey1780

    Very interresting and informative.! However i must mention that there are as many succesful racing programmes out there as what there are bad ones.! Barley can be used in many more ways than just as a basic feed.! Sunflower seed for instance can be used instead of barley with equal succes any time. The type of birds you select will prescribe what will be the best way to train, race and rest them. Your system makes perfect sense for your particular situation but if you plan to race your birds every week or every second week all through the race program you will have to increase the amount of food you feed drastictly.

    • @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons
      @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Bruce, My systems are for fanciers with limited time. My birds only go out of the loft two times per week between races. For the long distance they only go out two times in two weeks. Without feeding like I do I could not train like I do. Not sure about Sunflower. I feed mainly low fat and low protein and sunflower is a high fat seed. I could or would do things differently if I could work the pigeons more. I always say "you cannot feed like me and train like you" Many ways to success but if someone only exercises the pigeons two times per week and wants to be consistently competitive they must feed like I do. The results around the world have been incredible.

    • @brucecarey1780
      @brucecarey1780 8 месяцев назад

      @@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons
      Although sunflower is regarded as one of the high fat seeds i can assure you that it does not add weight to pigeons what so ever even if they are on a 100% sunflower seed dieet.
      Sunflower seed has the remarkabke abillity to break down inner fat build up very very fast.
      So combined with barley it is a wonderfood to keep the birds light and boyant.
      Then supplieng a rich oily dieet for the last 3 or 4 meals before basketing produdes amazing results on race day.
      I understand why you stick to your method because it has been tried and tested and works for you and elsewhere.!
      Using the correct seeds can be described as tossing the birds at home in the loft.!
      I agree that maybe 90% of all so called roadwork is more for the benefit of the fanciers them selves than for the birds itself.
      Regars, nice chatting with you.

    Hi Frank, great video once again. You mentioned if you had more time that you would probably train the birds more, but don't you think even for someone that has more time with their birds, you current method is more beneficial to the birds with regards to lighter feed, more rest days.
    Also besides that barley keeps the birds light, is there a benefit on the nutritional side of things, also what the main signs of crop canker. Apologies for so many questions.
    I'm planning to use your racing method next year. From Cape Town

    • @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons
      @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons  Год назад +1

      My system works super without much effort so maybe I would do the same even if I had more time. If it works why fix it. Canker will rise when birds are stressed and drop when the stress if removed during rest. I do not treat for canker and pigeons become more immune over time. I get a bird now and again with canker in the throat and you see yellow cheese like substance and I treat the bird with metrodonizol and leave the bird with the others to help the others build resistant to the group.

    • @FrankMcLaughlinPigeons

      Many times it is worth a try to breed from a sibling of a top racer. The good news is the pigeon although not successful can home and finish a series. Most cannot do that. You can only breed and try. Many top breeding pigeons were pigeons that finished a tough one loft series but never scored. Best of luck, Frank

    What system would you recommend for a complete newbie starting out? The system I would presume would determine the layout/design inside? The building has a 3’ overhang on the front that would make a nice aviary? Thanks again.

      If you are starting out as old birds make it simple and race celibate hens to the perch. Nothing is easier and nothing will fly as well with nearly no effort. You can keep the young birds in a section. You need a breeding section and a place to race the hens.
