    This video de-mystifies the concept of ‘observing’ especially abstract observation. It clearly defines the role of each function then forces you to understand that they all are supposed to work together in order to achieve success. MBTI isn’t really about playing your strengths -it’s about building on your weaknesses to achieve balance and avoid those reoccurring problems. If this was understood, people would actually stop clinging to a ‘type’ and limiting themselves to their disabilities.

    • @brackonstudios
      @brackonstudios 6 лет назад +7

      Yeah, but I think people will always revert back to their type's favorite area to work in. We should practice these steps, but I don't think an 'Ubermensch'-esque type can result.

      Most underrated comment I've ever read regarding mbti.
      I'm all for the journey of figuring out and being proud of who you are on a cognitive level. But I agree, surely one should use this info for self improvement and not basking in 'oh well, that's just who I am'

      But also provokes the question - are there ways to organize facts using Ni for example. Ni perceives and organizes concepts but these concepts can be factual. Is it better to take the path of least resistance, or is it better to force yourself to develop shadow functions which we are largely unaware of?

    • @milkyshakes
      @milkyshakes 4 года назад +7

      Joshua 717 Ni organizes patterns, which are abstract. Patterns can try to explain facts but they aren’t facts in it of themselves. Patterns can try to explain the possible future, but have the best chance of being accurate if you have a solid foundation of well organized (SI) facts (Se). You use SI to organize known Se information, there is no way around it unless you want inaccurate Ni conjectures based on a lack of planning.

    This could also be done with many different orders:
    Ni -> Ne -> Se -> Si (driving the project from the original inspiration)
    Ne -> Ni -> Se -> Si (driving the project with abstract general market understanding first)
    Si -> Se -> Ne -> Ni (knowing a fact is true like something being great for health, then finding other such products in market research, then marketing it by studying Ne and then the actual plan Ni)
    There are so many possible paths.

      I can relate most to the first you mentioned. (where Ni comes first)

    • @draggls
      @draggls 2 года назад +2

      I am pretty sure that Dave purpusely make this order flow to have the better results in reality, yes you could mix it but at what cost, specialy starting with Ni, Ne, even in success you would have to come back to the Se, Si backup to see why it was that way in the first place, so i believe that Se, Si, Ne, Ni is just more useful and practical

    Thank you for this video! INTJ here. It frustrates me to no end when people pigeonhole themselves into 1 niche whether it is MBTI or Enneagram or Zodiac sign, etc. All my successful projects (including simple studying in graduate/professional school) were based in the Se -> Si -> Ne -> Ni checklist/guideline you presented. “I am mildly obsessed with all my interests” was how I usually explained my methods to people :)

    This is so good. Everyone makes fun of Tai Lopez but his KSE thing really helped me out. It stands for: *Knowledge* you have to learn about the industry and that would be the Se and Si step, *Strategize* which would be the Ne and Ni step and then *Execute* which maybe would include some of the decider functions.. Too many people, myself included have always jumped to the execution stage. Loved this even better than KSE, will definitely be a useful tool for life :)

    I was researching universities today and was jumping right to Ni (my auxilary function) trying to figure out what I wanted my uni experience and career to be like, and it didn't get me anywhere... Then I started looking into individual subjects and writing everything down (Si I guess), comparing them and things started getting much clearer. Analogy: Thoughts went from magic cloud to glass.
    I often find myself having a beautiful plan and then realizing the facts where wrong. I will keep this video in mind as I have many of your other videos :)
    Love your channel, best, an ENFJ

    As an Ni dom with inferior Se, I see myself skip over the Se market research phase all the time. I sometimes botch my plans and my projects as a result. I make the mistake of not understanding the lay of the land before I try to find the best path through it, instead getting tripped up in holes and traps I would've seen if I had just taken a while longer to get the facts straight.

      You need objectivity. Option 1: Get video typed by Dave & Shannon through the website. Option 2: Understand the functions, then get people close to you to give you honest answers about yourself. They may be making their own test eventually, right now there is no good self assessment tool.

    I struggle with both Se + Si. I don’t usually take the time to actually absorb my environment. I get lost easily, nobody bothers to ask me about a single sensory detail anymore and scenic vacations were wasted on me. I don’t know what I do, but I know i’m not paying attention. Using a planner, grocery lists, budgeting, any useful categorizing: shit I don’t do. I’m working on this because how useful can my abstract observations be without a rich foundation of facts?

    • @thomasboguszewski7288
      @thomasboguszewski7288 6 лет назад +2

      Milkshakes - one thing that’s really helped me get better at sensory stuff is practicing mindfulness meditation, particularly like, meditating on sounds, sights, feelings, etc. Meditation has an abstract/psychological “reputation” so of course I originally got into it for whimsical Ne/Ni reasons but it turned out to secretly be all about paying attention to the sensory, so it was a great “gateway drug” to improving my ability to observe the tangible and be present to the real world.

    • @aashland
      @aashland 6 лет назад +2

      One thing I do that helps is I take walks on the weekends when weather permits and force myself to take one photo of something, which makes me pay closer attention to my surroundings. I also love birds so I make an effort to listen to the birdsong and look for birds. Even if I don’t notice anything else, as long as I notice the birds it’s a win. Master one sensory detail at a time.

    Hey Dave, would you consider making a video comparing and contrasting the INTP and INFJ and how they utilize their functions? • @FlagrantVagrant
    @FlagrantVagrant 6 лет назад +17

    Sounds to me like your example is conflating Ne with Te. I find Ne to make much wilder and disparate connections than simply seeking to understand business logistics. It's divergent, cross-contextual impulsive thoughts. Ne will see an apple and think of Steve Jobs or Snow White or James and The Giant Peach. Ne will see a playing card and think of Gambit or Kevin Spacey or Yugioh. It just sort of surfs through the boundary-less expanse of information in your Si, and ties strings between individual items on the barest, simplest of associations.

    Hi Dave.
    So I figured that everyone has to use all four perceiving functions in the right order. For specific MBTI types, does that mean they like spending time on a certain one more than the other, or do they mess up the ideal order.

    How can we use this concept of the functional perception chain in academic circumstances? This question is thought provoking... what do you guys think?
    In order to learn a concept explained by a professor in a lecture, one must do a mental exercise that creates an emotional attachment to that idea in order to move the idea to LTM. We perceive the concept first through Ne or Se. Then we need to translate that concept to Ni or Si in order to organize it. As an INFJ I have low awareness of Si. What are some activities that will develop Si?

    Can you learn to use functions that aren't in your stack? I.e. I an enfp have Ne & Te but could I train myself to use Ni and Ti ?

    • @cyberneticbutterfly8506
      @cyberneticbutterfly8506 4 года назад

      It's not that you train yourself to use them, you just learn which actions are typical for them and mimic those.
      I'm INTP so I would try to occasionally do Te-Like actions since I feel that they activate my Ne but it takes alot of energy and I get drained very quickly so I only sparsely use this trick.

    What is the best place too learn about the function in a more hole sum way I listened to my my type on audable ENTP and it felt shallow and it didn't dive into my lesser function habits and others things or is that more in the MBTI audiobook more so then the types , also can you dive into sister and mirror types and how people shift between them and the corresponding shadow function s reactions to that

  • @sheledon3272
    @sheledon3272 6 лет назад

    Hi. I can't remember which video I should be commenting this on, but I remember you saying that what function helps development in a type is like mixing colors.
    I actually think Te could help an INTP more than Fi.
    Maybe I have my type wrong, but I think if I focus on what is actionable in the real world more often I'll improve more instead of getting lost in my head wondering what I care about because there isn't much I care about, or maybe I'm super introverted ENTJ lol that has no Fi.
    Basically, I don't think Fi will save INTP or I am not INTP, but I'm sure Se can save ENTP.

    • @lyrimetacurl0

      Maybe for you doing the Se to Ne feels easy and you don't need to organise the Se? Maybe you're really good or bad at Si. For me I'm really good at Se so if I were to try to go straight to the Si I would automatically be doing the Se passively.

    In any case, you would make a fantastic illusionist.

  • @cyberneticbutterfly8506

    As an INTP I'm am so biased towars Ne and my Se is blind as f so I just tell myself that my Si long term memory are the facts and if I didn't already know something then "How could there be anything new that I don't already know?" so I'll base my patterns on what I already know and get nowhere.
    This is the bane of an INTP.

  • @fatoumfatoumeh
    @fatoumfatoumeh 4 года назад

    I feel like I go from Se to Ni too fast, and I spend the most time on those two (a lot of time on SE, and the Ni part is very enjoyable). I suck at Si, and I rush through Ne, so I might catch patterns, but probably not as much I should.

      I'm INTP so to me Ne seems like it's
      -Desire for variation and novelty. (especially novel thinking since I'm Ti dom)
      -Seeing similarities. This means making puns at all opertunities and for some INTPs they can delve into conspiracy theories cause if something has a similarity 'it has to be connected right?'.
      -Seeing patterns outside myself rather than for myself. So I am very opinionated about what society, the world, the future of humanity ought to be and think about that alot in an Elon Musk kind of way. I'm totally useless when it comes to the Ni type goal setting and doing something about the patterns regarding myself though.
