* Introduction and Importance of Survey Markers [00:00-00:17]: Keith emphasizes the significance of using survey markers to correctly position a house. He mentions finding survey markers at different ends of his property, which he uses to set his home.
* Surveyor Costs and Personal Approach [00:18-01:03]: He discusses his reluctance to spend money on surveyors, preferring to allocate funds to labor and materials. He explains that on larger lots, there's more room for error compared to smaller subdivision lots.
* Setting Back the House [01:04-02:00]: Keith describes how he sets back his house to meet geotechnical requirements, ensuring a larger pit than the home's footprint. He compares his house's position with neighboring homes to ensure alignment.
* Easement Considerations [02:01-04:05]: He talks about adjusting the house position for easements and driveways, ensuring he doesn't encroach on any setbacks. Keith communicates with his neighbors to address their concerns about maintaining easements.
* Utilizing Survey Marks and Decision-Making [04:06-06:21]: Keith explains how he uses existing survey marks to determine the position of his house without hiring a surveyor. He mentions the flexibility provided by larger home sites and the need for precise positioning in tighter spaces.

Maybe in another video, you could comment on the best setting for maximum sun in winter and minimum sun in summer, taking into account azimuth of the sun, average temperature, etc. In other words, setting a house for maximum energy efficiency. Thanks.
thats what i thought too 🙂
So Keith - you’re saying I should have went to college to become a surveyor? 😂
Glad we've got 61 acres to decide where to put our place!
Very helpful. Working with 2.1 acres in Salida Co. I got my driveway permited and completed this past summer. Due to moderate sloping I end up with a reasonably workable with very nice 1/2 acre view site. Now I'm planning to put in the well and septic. County regs require 100 ft between the well and septic, no problem, but that puts the house in a low spot on the site. Is it a problem for the house to sit below the grade for the septic? I really appreciate your content here! I am going to build the house and your content really gives me the extra confidence. Thank you so much!
recently closed on a parcel in NM, & surveyor says neighbor's fence is a couple degrees off, so it cuts in gradually by a few feet over a distance of 750'. not a big deal to us, but i'm pretty sure the slab that neighbor poured years ago is within the setback boundary... wonder if they measured from the incorrect fenceline, & that's why nothin was built on it.
Quick Question Keith. Should I pour basement slab before framing starts, or later in the process. I heard someone said you should wait basement slab until house is close to done so any rain water get absorbed by ground. Otherwise if there is a slab it will collect rain water and cause moisture and mold. Please advise as I am about to start my home excavation soon.
What jobs would you recommend people do with no savings 5k in debt but want to save up for a build your own home in a year or two…. I have 5k in debt but I want a job that would be as Similiar as possible to the day to days task of building your own home every 2 years. Maybe I could gain experience on that job and use it as a discount on a loan for experience …thanks for the feedback
Hopefully something above 1k-2k a week for 1.5 years more or less for proof of income
If i was the owner of the house beside that lot i would of bought it.. that would drive me crazy listening to that going on for months. He may have been the seller and that would of been a dumb move!
