    I think what I dislike the most about these films is that the new animated scenes just clash with the re used footage. Like, what’s even the point of making animating new scenes if you were just gonna re use footage from the show anyway? Why not just animate the entire movie with the new animation style instead of just clashing the two together

      The only part of the first movie that got me confused was Jerid attacking.... uh... what's-her-name for insulting him or showing him up, even though that part of the original episode wasn't included in the film. Now it just seems like he's a psycho who's prone to attack anyone for no discernable reason. At least the TV series showed that he only attacked people who provoked him first, ironically making him more restrained than Kamille "MY NAME IS A MAN'S NAME!!!" Bidan for the first half of the series.

    I thought the movies were intended to complement the show rather than replace it. They certainly don't hold up for stand-alone viewing, but do sometimes fill in some gaps. Granted, some of the retcons do make for some breaks in continuity, but the new perspectives can be interesting to discuss.
    As a 20th anniversary celebration of Zeta Gundam, it seems like the movies were really aimed at the diehard fans of the original broadcast who were willing to hit the theaters for some nostalgia. It doesn't work as an introduction to the story or characters at all. The question might be, was it worth it to view the new animation on the big screen?

    If anything, it might be wise for Gundam to drop the episodic format and design them as OVAs from the ground up given quality of Hathaway, and 0080.
    It is super weird how going OVA to episodes seemingly leads to really poor pacing bordering on boring (Unicorn and the TV variant of Battle of the Gods/Resurrection F for example) or going from serialization to OVAs lead to major conflicts wiith budget and condensing significant important content within a reasonable runtime (F91 and Zeta ANT immediately come to mind because they both have a lot of potential that come with deal breakers).
    It's a miracle that the 0079 Compilation Trilogy turned out as good as they did!

  • @porkflaps4717
    @porkflaps4717 2 года назад +17

    The new animation is literally the only plus to those films. So much big info and nuance is lost. See F91 for reference. I will say even though its only a few frames, it was great seeing a Gundam TR-1 Hazel in combat deployment colors animated. I already considered A.O.Z. canon, but that made it official.

    One other that makes this trilogy even more depressing is that the third film is not only the last time Hirotaka Suzuoki voiced Bright (who gets the last line "I can figure out for myself what they're talking about [what Kamille and Fa are saying as they embrace]. Who wants to listen to such childish nonsense?"), it was also his final anime role; he died five months later from lung cancer, aged only 56. 😢

    i definitely think that double zeta ending is one of the best endings in gundam. the end of zeta felt nearly hopeless, being turned into a vessel for newtypes seems like a horrible fate. so after all that happens, the first time i finished zz and i saw fa running, i held my breath for just a moment, and just started bawling when they reached out to each other and hugged. its my personal favorite arc about kamille; he didnt realize how lucky he was to have Fa, and when he did, he nearly lost everything. so when he comes back, its so, SO much more worth it

  • @jparkerj20
    @jparkerj20 8 месяцев назад +4

    Mr. Tomino decided to make a new translation because he felt he should be responsible and do something about the nihilistic story he created with the original Z. The New Translation is meant for the people who watched the original Z, not the completely new viewers.
    Funny fact: Mr. Tomino wanted to finish Gundam and just move on by the time he worked on ZZ. The series was supposed to end with Char, now without his hesitations, taking the lead of pretty much everything. But Sunrise wanted more Gundam because it was earning a lot of money. Mr. Tomino therefore made Char's Counterattack that, to him, was supposed to make Sunrise not want to sell the toys that would represent certain ideals and ideas. Well, shit, it had a complete opposite effect and the series went on to create the Heisei Gundam era.
    Here's a thing. If you really want to understand what Mr. Tomino wanted to tell through Gundam, where mechs are just backdrops to what he portrays, do yourself a favour and watch Ideon.

    I appreciate your opinions here, but I have to disagree on several points. I think the movies overall tell a much more cohesive and watchable story. The show (and most long-running Gundam series in general) suffers greatly from its format, especially the formula of having 10 minutes of plot followed by 10 minutes of usually inconsequential space combat to sell toys/model kits for the majority of its episodes. It may be a bias from having watched the films first or just me getting old and having limited time, but I don't feel like there was enough worthwhile content in the TV series that I missed by watching the films to justify sitting through the trickling pace, wandering narrative, and formulaic episode structure. There were so many sequences in the TV series that I just couldn't bring myself to care about that it left a pretty negative impression on me.
    Then of course there's the ending. If they ever do a film treatment of ZZ, I think the changes could be incorporated pretty comfortably, so I don't really have a problem with the ending changes. I was able to move on to ZZ without really any issue by just reading what the changes were. My only major gripe, and it's something I can agree with you on, is the really uncomfortable and sudden changes in art style throughout the films. It was a constant distraction, and given just how much content was re-animated, they probably should have just re-animated the whole story.

    • @CheemsBased
      @CheemsBased  2 года назад +18

      No worries, you’re absolutely entitled to agree or disagree!
      I do agree that the episodic structure is kind of what makes the series suffer in some aspects, but for some instances it works better for me because it allows some characters to be introduced like Rosamia and not just introduced and tossed to the side to never be seen again.
      But for the most part I’m beggining to understand how an episodic structure like 0079’s might have made the series suffer a way lot ever since I read The Origin.

    I watched Zeta when it was first released as a kid. This year, I decided to watch it with my son to start him up on Gunpla kits. I found out about the compilation films and bought them straight away. We got to the part where Camille snatches the Mk IIs. I stopped the playback, took the discs out, and through all three films into the bin, then bid on e-bay for the original series. It was beyond comprehension.
    They should've gone with 10 to 12 one-hour episodes instead of 3 films. They could've emphasised on fewer core themes to expand instead of trying to include everything (whilst changing everything and messing up the logic down the timeline. Char's counter-attack just seems illogical and unreasonable now.).

    Honestly the first two aren’t that bad and they work as refreshers for the main story but the third one is pure chaos. It’s like 90 straight minutes of fighting and death with zero room to breath. I’m pretty sure Haman betrays both the AEUG and Titans in the span of 5 minutes and then hitches back up with them again right after. It’s crazy.
    I think the movies do some good stuff, cutting the fat of the middle of Zeta and removing stuff like the Rosamia arc but that comes at the cost of the Dakar speech, Kilimanjaro, Kamille getting arrested and the Ghost Colony. They really needed an extra 30 or so minutes, even if that was just to add in some more exposition to explain what in the fuck is happening half the time

    I don't get why they didn't make each film 2 to 2.5 hours. The 0079 movies are a lot longer while compiling a smaller amount of source material. In A New Translation, it hurts especially the first movie, where a lot of character establishment is skipped in favour of quick flashbacks. I've actually seen the Zeta series before, but I still had trouble remembering what the hell was going on. I would call that a pretty damning indictment. The other two films do kind of sweep you up in the drama, but as a whole, this trilogy doesn't leave a very good taste in the mouth. Really a missed opportunity here to make something that can stand on its own like the 0079 movies. That's not a dig on the 0079 series by any means, but the movies do some things very well, especially since the series' ending had to be rushed so not all its themes could be explored very well, and there's quite a bit of filler even in those 43 episodes. Whereas Zeta comes with 50 episodes that may have some filler and some fat to trim here and there, but it's a very cohesive series overall, so it's hard to decide what to cut.

      No, that is incorrect. Director Tomino gave an interview. He originally wanted to re-animate ALL the Zeta footage with new modern animation. But the studio SUNRISE said no, and denied his request. The studio wanted to be cheap. So they gave Tomino a small budget, and a small animation team.
      After Sunrise saw how much money the first Zeta Gundam movie made at the box office, Sunrise increased the budgets for the 2nd and 3rd movies. So Tomino was able to include a lot more new animation. But due to tight production schedules, his team was not able to re-animate all of it before release. And Sunrise didn't want to give him more time. The studio was being greedy and wanted to release it as fast as possible.

    Not sure you really understood why Kamille went at Jerid, but that might be because the english localization, did their own take on it. The nuance is totally different. Kamille doesn't hate his parents. He's just disgusted they are both employed by a PMC; rather than say, a public service industry like Anaheim engineering.
    Zeta Gundam focuses on the corporate conflict (for GenX during the late 70's, early 80's that was a thing). The Federation and Zion impoverished themselves fighting the One year War; and subsequently the Feds didn't have the power to enforce law. So, oligarchs like Jamitoff saw an opportunity, and erected the PMC "Titans"; and in response public service corporations freely backed a veterans force called the AEUG to contest them. As they are not military corporations and wanted to avoid another all out war erupting in response to the Titans oppressive control. That was Jamitoffs real aim. He not only hijacked the Jupiter project (a publicly funded project), he was asserting control over all the publicly owned companies. It was only a matter of time until he took them all.
    So Kamille was disgusted by the whole thing. Jerids comment didn't mean anything, Kamille says so later on. Its the disrespect is like a ripple effect, y'know, it starts with a kid like him and ends up being everybody, because no one stands up to them. - bit of a foreign concept these days I suppose.
    I've only seen the first translation film when it released. Didn't hate it, some of the effects were good. Its where there are iconic moments that it felt a bit gratuitous. I did enjoy the depth of the 360 monitor inside the cockpits. I guess the kinda money they were spending on it, they needed to get as much outta it as possible.

    If you consider brainwashing then at least Rosamia and Four were forced into the cyber newtype position. Recoa Londe just went out of her way to join the titans even though She was part of the AEUG. Leaving the argama purely on the basis of a crush towards scirocco kind of reduced her significance in the whole anime. Not to mention she was a bad pilot as well Emma sheen on the other hand did the opposite left the titans to work for the radish and then the argama.

      Well it removes a reason for Char to flip his entire script for Char's Counterattack, before at least there was a reason, according to New Translation we're supposed to think Char just said "Fuck it, Earth dies" for no discernable reason during CCA, part of the plot of ZZ Gundam incorporates the fact Kamille's effectively brain dead.
      I wouldn't say it effects the U.C. entirely, but the immediate series after Zeta Gundam becomes much more muddled and make less sense on with CCA.

    10 months late but I think what made the original compilation work compared to Zeta gundam is how the original 079 anime kind of sucks in some places. (Remember the episode where they need to find salt for the white base or doan's island?) Zeta gundam has some episodes that I don't really enjoy personally (I hate Rosammia's episodes or the episodes from 24-31 where it feels like little happens at points) but everything feels like it more or less has a purpose. Zeta also has a full 50 episodes compared to 079's (39 or is it 42?) episodes. I think it's really hard to do a comp. movie for Zeta gundam given these circumstances but I feel like it could've been done if things were a bit different. Ultimately though I enjoy the movies as a compliment especially the third one seeing the new animation and whatnot.

      I would love them to take another shot at this in the future and make it a tad bit longer with all the "old" footage remastered. The original intro needs to be added back in. It's crucial to explaining Kamille's character. I want the films to be good enough to stand on their own, not as a companion piece.

    I've heard a rumor that there's a plan for another zeta project once hathaway is done.
    Also, I actually prefer four's death in the second movie. I wish they had given her more character prior. What brings the old one down for me is that she flops back and forth between remembering kamille and not. But I think the new death makes more sense for the plot and in universe as well. I mean, her cockpit is stabbed and blown up, yet she's still in one piece? yeah okay... i guess. But also neither really do a good job with the romance between them. I think it would be better that they just have feelings, and nothing ever comes of it.

    Cyber Newtypes could have been a way to make Zeon resurgent as the good guys as a sort of full circle to the Federation vs Zeon cycle of war. With the Federation becoming as bad as or worse than Zeon due to ever increasing paranoia and Zeon rising again having seen in the Federation what road they themselves had been walking and realizing shit is fucked up and putting a stop to it all.

    Hmm... Hard disagree. Your whole argument is about comparing it to the TV series. Without that baseline, you wouldn't have any argument to present. You need argue why the movies as a stand alone product (without comparing it to the TV series) are "bad".
    A lot of these films aren't even meant for existing fans. But rather they are meant for people who have never seen Zeta Gundam before. An entirely new generation. Older fans can watch it of course, but it's not 100% for them.

    I just want to start by saying that you're in all your right to don't like it and I respect that, I just don't get why people complain about how "bad they did the pace" We have to consider that they´re basically mashing together 50 episodes, that absolutely will compromise the character development, the order of things and how they happen, but they had to make things cohesive by how fast they had to go. Of course people say "If they were able to do it with '79 why they did not do the same?" For some reason it seems people just ignore how extremely fast the ''79 movies go, not to mention those are 1 hour longer each movie and even though they are longer they also feel like they're running full speed, I watched the origianl 50 episodes of '79 and the movies feel like the White base falls from 1 shitstorm to the next and that it's overwhelming to say the least.
    With New Translation I felt the changes they did make the store more cohesive FOR SOMEONE WHO WAS NEVER WATCHED ZETA ON A FULL RUN, I loved what they did to explain Emma what the titans were really doing and how they added Lila´s death and made it work by the changes they did, you as someone who works on audiovisual media knows how hard it's to do that and doing that with a series from '85 which pace is not it's biggest strenght, that's amazing in my opinon.
    The new animation... some people liked it, some people don't and I'm fine with it, Zeta is my favorite series and be able to watch Amuro clashing against the Ashimar full speed not giving a shit if he dies... to me as a fan of Zeta knowing how difficult and expensive animate the Mk II kicking Lila's MS is, I grabbed that as a gift from sunrise. They could just do what they did with 79 and use only old footage but the new animation... man, I loved that, I just loved it. Well we can see New Translation as a newcomer, an old fan and someone who' s very casual with Gundam, people focus too much on the bad stuff but meh, they can do what's best for them, I really liked it but it's just my opinion.

  • @kevinnorwood8782

    I honestly don't think the ending of film 3 really fucks up the UC timeline too badly. Haman is still active by the end of film 3, and she's the primary antagonist in Double Zeta, so there's one problem solved. And Yazan Gable is still drifting in his escape pod at the end of film 3, so there's another problem solved. As for Kamille? I think it would be VERY easy to rewrite so that he STILL ends up in a catatonic state to set the stage for Double Zeta. You could rewrite it so that, instead of a final mindrape attack from Scirocco, Kamille, shortly after the final battle, got overwhelmed by a backlash of using so much of the Zeta's power to defeat Scirocco and ended up catatonic as a result.
