    When I was in Saudi for Umrah I found their actual cities really nice. Jeddah was genuinely beautiful. I really don’t understand why they are forgoing their established culture to make cities that just look like every single American suburb but somehow even more artificial and dull.

      It's not going to be like that everywhere. Because energy sources are decreasing and that lifestyle is very much energy-intensive. The future is in the countryside with locally sourced goods as much as possible. Cities only grow now outwards as slums. We need to wake up from the 1960s science-fiction fantasies. 1960s' sci-fi was talking about 1960s, not about the actual physical future with its real life constraints.

    Nah, that video the influencer made was no doubt very sterile. Ive lived in Saudi for more than 11 years and Saudi is a blast, great people (both the Saudi Arabian people and people you meet from all over the world here), awesome food and a really good energy about the place that I notice the absence of when i go back to the UK.
    The UK is the dystopian nightmare in my view. I think the UK is an absolute hellscape where corporations and private equity (usually foreign) have corrupted the government to allow them to profit from every aspect of your existence to an almost suffocating extent, where most people are desperately scraping from one payday to the next and where its almost impossible to steer clear of ultra processed food.
    I actually feel much more free in saudi than in UK.

    I studied architecture for 5 years but even if you aren't an architect, u can see it's not really a feasible idea. No city starts off as a line. It's a dot that expands by radiating outwards based on the extent of population growth & demand. Also because it''s basically very narrow, tall & covered with glass, it get's very dark & hot, especially because of how cramped it would be, as it's half a running track wide & 500 meters talls. It's basically a long narrow road of buildings that are taller than the Eiffel tower. The line was cut from 170 km in length to 2.4 km. Diriiyah is much nicer, it has character & it has a proven record of being more feasible & practical. Usually the way to handle this is by building extensions of a city

      Its not for everybody. Have a look at some of the middle east cities they built. Not to everyones taste but works for the climate they live in. They look after their own people. Free health education. Thats what can be done if you are wealthy and dont let other countries in to exploit your wealth. Fortunately they have enough oil to keep the airconditioners running to indulge in experimental projects.

      lol yep in reading over these comments which say the place seems to lack character, i tried to put my finger on just what it was
      and i think that may be part of it... it seems extremely flat doesnt it! lmao.... no variation in height anywhere whatsoever... no nice green hills or trees
      making it so when you look towards the horizon, if the sky is mostly empty or heck even if it has lots of clouds, your vision is still unblocked for miles and miles... might even give one the feeling they are wandering lost in a desert? lol
      so yeah flat for miles and miles, talk and rumours of temperatures exceeding 100F... all with the building style of a strip mall?
      i dunno i dont wanna be too quick to assess, since i only seen a short video, but wasnt that impressed by what i saw :p

    I worked for almost a decade on international labour rights at different levels, much of the work related to labour migration to gulf states, I still dare not transit through certain states due to connections and articles , papers , in which I had been involved .yet in the most casés , especially now , the migration to gulf states is for many families the only way out of grinding cycles of poverty and inequality often supported by corruption and illegal cultural, religious boundaries....the worst case scenarios are often facilitated by those domestic agencies and cheating middlemen, modern slavery,,it's all relative.....🤔🤔🤔

    Where were the mirrored walls? Where were the solar panels? Why were the streets so wide and car friendly if it was meant for mass transit? All that water intensive grass in the middle of the dessert? Because it's in the middle of a dessert, all food has to be imported. There will be no farms surrounding it to provide food. Almost certainly, all the energy the city consumed was powered by a gas power plant.
