Just opened an old family diary from back in 1862, this song was written out. Had to see if it was recorded. Pleased to find it. Thanks for uploading this.
Coat of blue, coat of gray, both blood-stained, brothers in the fray. For loyalty and honor they slew and were slain, and none will say their struggle was at all in vain.
Another wonderful song by John McDermott. He is beyond a doubt the best. He does a lot of songs about military people. That is one thing that makes him so unique. One of the best singers of all time.
I do not believe any other singer could sing this song with the emotion that John did. This would have been a great song for Ken Burns Civil War series. It still remains my favorite John McDermott song. Thanks so much for posting this truly moving song.
You're welcome and thanks to you for bringing it up: there are so many songs by John McDermott, so sometimes it's good to have "requests" so I can add them :-)
Love encountering a previously unknown (to me) song, particularly when it's sung with such beauty and emotion. Thank you for sharing this truly lovely song!
Always makes me weep, as it minds me of my dear sister, Diane, my litter-mate, who died much too young. She had come to Christ, and for me, the line about finding her in Heaven in her robe of white has chimed through the years, and now I'm older the toll seems louder. Its a blessed thing to cherish a hope of meeting a loved one again some day.
This is my favorite of McDermott's. I've heard the Bluegrass version of this, and I much prefer this slower version. This is really beautiful. I cried the first time I heard this. Amazing emotion in his songs!
Very beautiful and I also love Mother Maybelle and her daughters (Carter Sisters) version yes it's a bit faster but Maybelles lead vocals and Helen and Anita's harmony vocals are irreplaceable ,just fantastic. Love both versions.
I wonder who this soldier was and if he survived the war. I have two great great grand uncles who fought in the U.S.Army in the American Civil War. They both survived the conflict. One of them received the Medal of Honor at Gettysburg.
Les guerres civiles sont les plus féroces et si ceux qui se battaient pour supprimer l'esclavage ont gagné le racisme continue à faire des morts dans certains états. Bravo pour ton choix . J.C.
@@MrEpeeFencer yes it was, in short, and was decades in the making. "State Rights" was really the freedom to own and use/abuse other humans. None of the young men who enthusiastically joined it really knew that however, North or South.
A very, very beautiful song!
A very good singer interpreting the song.

It's such a sad song making me think of how terrible wars were, and still today we face them. And John'voice so lovely and warm as always
My most favourite song

I was lucky enough to hear John McDermott in concert in Victoria, BC, quite a few years ago.

Thanks for sharing this Great Song on the eve of our 239 years old giving from the men and women of our US MARINE Corps.
I am not American but still I can dedicate this song to all the veterans and the fallen soldiers.

Anche la mia Natalina è piena di boccioli... questo ci annuncia che siamo vicino al Natale... il tempo fugge..
Ti abbraccio, Anita
Great Canadian voice! First met John, singing at a mutual friends funeral who lived in Tewksbery.

The war was not fought over slavery.
@@MrEpeeFencer Y'know, it's not like the confederate constitution says so.

@@fiddlemusik No it wasn't.
There was also a faded coat of gray. These men were missed, too.
