Breaking his hands was a pretty serious threat of maiming, given the quality of medical care in ancient Greece- it would have pretty much ensured that Telemachus wouldn't have been able to hold a weapon or be a serious warrior. Which, given the time, meant a very real risk that he wouldn't have been respected as a leader or king.
Yep. I don't know about ancient Greece, but Crusader Kings has taught me that a ruler cannot be Maimed in medieval Greece. Broken bones often did not set the way they do today.
So Track 38 is titled "Odysseus." In the context of this musical, that's interesting. There are three other songs with the same naming convention. Polyphemus, Scylla, Charybdis. They're the songs where we meet a monster in it's lair.
Another thing to note in a similar vane is until now the only time mortals have had backing vocals is when they had allies to provide it while gods and monsters could conjure their own backing vocals. Throughout this sing Odysseus has backing vocals chanting his name.
In Polyphemus there's a choir singing the cyclop's name. And Odysseus' name is sung the same in the song Odysseus and it adds to the idea that he's not the same man from when we started. And I freakin love it.
If you'd like some info regarding who the main suitors here were, they're: Eurymachus - voiced by Dennis Diaz. He's the "Open Arms" guy, and in the Odyssey he served a very similar role, as he blames all the suitors crimes on Antinous so that Ody spares them. Though he genuinely was not that bad, as he was Telemachus's favorite, as the Prince believed him to be "the best man in Ithaca" who was most-deserving of the throne, besides Odysseus. Amphinomus - voiced by Tristan Caldwell. He's the "Damn he's more cunning" guy. In the Odyssey he's genuinely a kind guy, and was Penelope's favorite. He was very much against Antinous's plot, and was warned by a disguised Odysseus "not to come into the school tomorrow" in a way, before the massacre lmao. Tristan also voiced the unnamed suitor saying "You don't understand it, this man plans for every fight!" Melanthius - voiced by Jamie Wiltshire. He's that final suitor who begged for mercy, and who probably had the most lines here. In the book he's actually Odysseus's old goatherd, who sided with the Suitors and aided them, enough to become one of them. At the end, he got brutally mutilated by Ody or his helpers, and I mean BRUTALLY. Some of our other beloved singers also provided some lines, like Luke "Zeus" Holt doing some Frenchy accent for "We have the advantage, we've the numbers and the might" and "we know these halls, the odds can be tilted" lines. Also TROY "Hermes" Doherty sang the "We're empty-handed up against an archer, our only chance is to strike him in the darkness" line. Likely all 5 of those, as well as the singer for Ares, Earle Gresham Jr. voiced the remaining unnamed suitors. And they all sounded so amazing! Their voices so unique and brilliantly characterized!
What a great rundown of the suitors! And daaang, I never would have noticed Luke and Troy- they've got some serious versatility there. Could give them even more options for voice acting in the future.
@@falcoskywolf Thank you! And yeah I couldn't believe it was Luke either, but he confirmed it in one comment. Yesterday I also asked Earle AKA Ares if he voices any, to know for sure, and yep he said that two of the suitors are him!
@@Kamarovsky_KCM Seems like "In the heat of battle" and "Where is he? Where is he" was Earle, but that's just me listening with my ear, so I could be wrong
Love how Odysseus learned a corresponding response to all the suitor’s pleas throughout the show. “You’ve destroyed the serpent’s head” ❌ “how much longer til the snake breaks free?” “Now the rest of us are no longer a threat” ❌ “He’s still a threat until he’s dead.” “old king forgive us instead” ❌ “You could learn to forgive.” “No” “So that no more blood is shed, let’s have open arms instead” ❌ “The blood on your hands is something you won’t lose” -> “The blood we shed it never dries” -> “wash it away like the blood your hands have known.”
One thing i never see brought up is that, when that one suitor Eurymachus makes the plea for mercy, forgiveness, and open arms, Ody responds with the exact same response and tone as Poseidon when he also asked for forgiveness in Get in the Water: _"No."_
The fact that pop makes things familiar is perfect for Odysseus and Telemachus. They don't know each other, but there's something there. All the stories Telemachus heard about his father and Odysseus seeing his wife in his son's features.
5:28 Dude the fact that you caught immediately how special the change in perspective is is so great. It really emphasizes the fact that Odysseus has become the monster.
‘i can’t help but wonder’ sounds SO much like ‘just a man’, the beginning part specifically where he’s holding an infant and reminiscing abt his son. the high parts in ICHBW sounds like “how could i hurt you?” when he’s speaking to the baby
If you wanna talk about layering. Go back and listen to the sword clashes during song 38. They’re call backs to telemacus and songs including him like little wolf. Also the last song makes me cry everytime
Here are all the callbacks I’ve managed to catch in Odysseus: 1:51 Beginning is like Monster 2:24 Danger Motif 4:36 Odysseus guitar riff 4:37 Choir sings Odysseus like Polyphemus 5:27 The suitors = Survive (music wise not the same, but vibe wise) 6:27 Choir sings second Odysseus in danger motif like the end of Mutiny before Zeus arrives 6:37 “Where is he”: Legendary 6:40 “Keep your head down he’s aiming for the torches” = “My real wife knows I’m not scared of the water” music callback to Different Beast 6:40 The torches: Scylla 7:40 Suitor asking forgiveness and mercy like Ody in Ruthlessness 8:13 Open Arms callback 8:16 “No” = Get in the Water 9:32 Quick thought: Athena 9:35 Legendary 9:37 Warrior of the Mind 10:59 Where is he 11:09 Hold him down 12:0112:58 *shing* Poseidon boss battle sound 13:03 Choir last rendition of Odysseus: No Longer You 13:25 Final beat drop: End of Monster
@ in Get In The Water, after Ody asks Poseidon if he could forgive him and then Poseidon says no and then spazzed out for a second and the giant water Cthulhu thing appears there is a *shing* type of sound… I couldn’t think of a better description other than “Poseidon boss battle sound” 😂
Jay did a video recently explaining that after we see Athena, two motifs play on two different instruments. On the piano, the “this is my goodbye” is playing, and on the guitar, the “Penelope” motif plays, kind of showing where their current thought are.
10:35 maybe the song "Storm" from the ocean saga fits better? "Headddd towards the island and avoid the crashing waves Stayyy where the tide is flat and then you will be safe" its like the suitors are the evil counterparts to the crew
Also 9:25 Imagine this. "I find it hard to believe that the sharpest of kings left his armory unlocked." "I say we strike first, we don't have time to waste, so let's raid the place and-" (Full Speed Ahead reference)
That is so true! Before telemachus's fight with the suitors, it uses the same sound as "wouldn't you like" because it's like getting the suitors "drunk" or "high" on the thought of getting one over on odysseus
6:01 that melody is actually Odysseus's melodic Motif! You can hear it in most of the song where he's acting cunning or fighting(The Horse And The Infant, Done For, etc.). Fun fact. Telemachus's attacks in "Odysseus" are all different motifs too, fist being the Worrior Of The Mind motic, second being Telemachus's Legendary one, third being "fight little world, fight" and fourth being the second half of the Odysseus's one(just a bam bam bam bam bam, where the full one would be pararara bam bam bam bam bam)
My favourite part of this is the transition between Ody's voice in 'Odysseus' being raw and angry, to be so soft and gentle in 'Can't help'. It's a prelude to the next song with Penelope where she can clearly see that he's still in there.
10:21 I’m *so* glad you caught this! The suitors wanted a taste of the power, but bit off more than they could chew! They didn’t quite have the blessing of a certain god 👀
05:48 Aren’t those the same notes for “all I hear are screams”? If so, it seems like - underscoring the violence - callback to the pain that’s fueling him
The change in perspective is cool because in all the songs where all the monsters are named, (Polythemus, Scylla, Charybdis) and now Odysseus. In all of these songs, the named monster doesn’t lead.
I think I know why I Can't Help But Wonder sounds familiar. The melodic introduction before the guitar matches that in Just a Man... as does the finger pattern in the acoustic guitar, the main difference in instrumentation being Telemachus' Legendary theme. I can't believe it took me a month to realize the callbacks here 😭
Wow. It is STUNNING to me that you caught that both Hermes and Athena are there! 👏👏👏 Just love your whole body reactions. We feel the music the same way man.
Great breakdown. I can’t wait to see your reaction to the finale song. Also, it always gets me that you hear the piano of My Goodbye at the end of I Can’t Help But Wonder because it is their last goodbye.
6:45 Actually, more than two. In "Remember Them" the cyclops family sings "Who hurts you?" to the same tune, because they are also wondering where Odysseus, though they do not know his name, is. In all these instances, Odysseus is an unknown figure.
The fact that The Odyssey and Jorge were able to pull off making a journey seem very action packed is mind blowing. Most books I've read the journey is really boring.
Broken hands isn't death for sure but it more or less means you'll be dependent on others to survive tbh. We use our hands for EVERYTHING, as someone w a lot of pain in mine who's tried to limit my use of them it's fucking impossible. Try keep an eye on how much you use them, you'll be surprised. Esp given the hands are such delicate, complex structures that even medical doctors now have to subspecialise in hand surgery and even for them it isn't easy to repair them. But your certainly don't have anything that sophisticated in Ancient Greece.
5:47 the guitar riff I think is also the same riff from the very first song the horse and the infant when they're preparing for war but it's with a different instrument
I love when he says just "no." To the suitor, reminicent of poseidon when ody asked him for forgiveness, hence also ruthlessness, both in just 1 word is crazy work imo, might be reaching though
I still stand by my opinion that Athena transfered Ody to Ares, and took Telemachus in as the new warrior of the mind :D hence the red eyes staying through the last animatics
I’m fairly certain Ody is just done being an individual for any God or Goddess at that point. I actually don’t think Ares was involved other than a possible happy observer.
@sage_justice1383 I base my opinion on the fact that somehow he was resurrected from the dead in 600 strike (and I think that was the time he gained the red eyes) and was able to defeat Poseidon into a really bad shape. I just cannot believe he did that with no help from the gods, even if he was a descendant of Hermes :D
@Smileynify First Odysseus didn't literally come back to life. The ghosts are just Odysseus hallucinating because of his guilt and his guilt dies there. He metaphorically dies. Second, Odysseus had the wind bag which contained poseidon's storm his own power. That's how he beat him. Third, I think that takes away from Odysseus' character arc and the red eyes meaning becomes a monster if it's ares' fault.
Is it just me, or is eurymachus’s verse similar to a melody from Polyphemus where Odysseus was asking for mercy from the cyclops. Not exactly the same, but similar. Also, I think the notes in the beginning of I can’t help but wonder are the same as the ones at the beginning of Just A Man but I’m probably wrong. It’s just a bit lower in I can’t help but wonder.
Honestly, no I don't want to sing along to I can't help but wonder. Where you hear happy, I hear sad. And i can chalk it up childhood trauma. Suppressed emotions, and just bring unable to relate though. From non music and separating myself to appreciate the story/ narrative yes it happy. And honestly i always worried Odysseus anger might have caused him to blindly hurt or kill Telemachus during the last song of suitors slaying 🤷♀️ but i don't favor slow song no matter how happy the musical intention. Because it's not dopamine releasing for me. Wish it was, but its not😔
