Back in 1966, in my radio DJ days, the publicity guy at the local music hall invited me to be part of a welcoming committee at the airport when the Smothers Brothers came to Salt Lake City. After all the hand shaking and greeting, I was heading out the door when I heard "Hey Jim, can you give the Brothers a lift to their hotel?" I had a big Pontiac with plenty of room so I said "sure". So I'm driving back to downtown with Tom & Dick and their road manager in my back seat. They were having conversations about all kinds of topics and you can guess I never said a word. I dropped them off at the hotel and went on my way. I did see their show the next night and it was most entertaining. They certainly deserved all the fame that came their way.

These guys were incredible in their ability to stay in character. How Dick could avoid cracking up is beyond me. The irony is that their comedic shtick enabled them to extend the longevity of their “folk” singing long after it had kind-of gone out of style as a mainstream pop music idiom.

These guys were such innovators, and godparents of such contemporary faux tense situational skits as Zach Galifanakis' "Between Two Ferns" and I'm sure many others. They are/were so good...as a young kid, watching their act on the tube, they always had me convinced there was actually some rivalry grudge between them. Legends.

This day and age would applaud their desires to keep the issues of the day prevalent and before the public minds and let us deciding what, as the public, on the events of the day are worth our perspective. I as a youth only loved them for their comic routines and still do. I even became a loyal member of their fan club. Go Smother Brothers!

It's 1981 in this video, and I see that Tommy gave Dick the little "punch" that I'm talking about.... STILL done today (2019), so I wonder where and when it started?
