Joe made a perfect point - every performer or band needs gigs to get started. The number of places in my town that hire live bands can be counted on one hand... Gigging is important because it drives not only the band playing but also brings new people into the music business. At some point, even Mick and Keith are going to call it a day. There will always be new kids wanting to play music but without venues, they're not going to earn any money to pay for their equipment. Keep playing Joe, you are the shining light to a number of folks!
unfortunately...live music is not what it used to be..let alone talking about blues/rock music..I don't know with all the snowflake people phenomenon if this will come back, gigs, venues full of people at live concerts, etc. I mean most live music is either some progressive rock super technical, or whatever, or super aggressive metal. Maybe in the US things are different, where you still have blues/country, etc...but in Europe...not so much....
You got that right …I played in 70’s and 80 90’s mainly I had so many clubs …to play…that’s what got me started as a guitarist..today you don’t see clubs …for bands to play on fri sat night…I’m glad I got to experience that…very sad…it’s almost non existent
Regardless of if you like his music or not, Joe B. is a treasure. The thing that I admire about him the most is just how normal he is. He is one of us. Once most musicians achieve a national or international degree of success, it seems like their feet start lifting off of the gorund. But with Joe, he is still very grounded and level headed. Us, 'common musicians', can still relate to him. It is refreshing and wonderful to know that guys like him still exist.
I went through a down faze , playing guitar . I'm talking ten to twelve years. about two to three years ago got my first smart phone with a big screen . got on RUclips , and very quickly became fired back up to play again. bought a les Paul , and haven't slowed down since. my church is very excited about the potential ,( if I practice😂) . my kids love the sounds. I think though , we are at a breaking point. and I just hope my family will be one of many to hold on for years and years. by the way , one of the very first videos I saw on RUclips. the video that straight fired me up . Joe and Beth Hart , close to my fire. blew my mind that I had never heard such fired up music. I grew a real resentment towards radio stations after that . 😊
I heard something lately that made perfect sense . . . . "we need the Guitar Heroes we used to have, to inspire the next generation to pick up a guitar"
Something I've heard is that video games are somewhat to blame. 15- 20 years ago most everyone (boy or girl) played a musical instrument, a lot of it was started when in school, the high school band. Or playing around a campfire. And the guitar was the easy one to learn a few chords on and carry around.
It makes me sad hearing about the state of live music. Luckily where I live they are still a few live music venues kicking around, and it makes me more motivated to get out there and play to try and keep what's left still alive. Love Joe as a musician but love him just as much as a music nerd and as a person.
David Kennison same here. my blood pressure can't take it . I keep telling myself , this guy knows what he's doing. and if he drops it , just edit it out , cause my heart would explode.
Joe has a lot more patience and restraint than I would have. I own three Gibsons; the combined price of all three isn’t even probably a tenth of what Skinner would bring, and I still wouldn’t allow someone to handle any one of them like this guy is handling Joe’s Les Paul.
Joe mentions Lafayette, IN around the 6:00 mark. He hits the nail on the head. I live there and currently the music scene is dead. No venues to play in.
I love Joe. At first I didn't want to because he is a lifelong musician that I thought didn't pay his dues but I was wrong. The thing that makes me love him the most is his respect and reference for the history of the music of the Blues and of the guitars I really feel as if there is nobody better than Joe to have them and to be their caregiver.
Yeah. Anyone who plays at the level he does, you paid your dues. You can't cheat sheet your way into playing at the level he does. He's put so much time and effort into learning. He's paid his dues.
Joe you are not a grumpy old man... you are a man in love with the music scene and you don't like to see her being done wrong! You are also a phenomenal artist... one who is incidently picking up fans through you tube and people sharing.
Totally...it was amazing. I've never been too gear focused...but when I lived in Ithaca, I was fortunate to get to play a bunch of cool stuff at Rumble Seat...the bursts and the original flying V that I got to play had sounds that I'll always remember....it's an amazing combination of power/throatiness and clarity, at the same time. It's not smoke and mirrors...they're just really special instruments that have "the sound" we grew up hearing on all those classic albums.
@@BoyajianDon Many years ago, I bought a used EC "Blackie" Strat from Rumble Seat, online. They sent me a sweet guitar, perfectly set up - and tossed in a free t-shirt. Very classy place!
We have one great old camera store(next to the college). Dang, Joe is "an Old Man now", I remember when he was a kid. Glad to have him aboard. I collect guns(ooh, scary). There's always this debate, do you shoot them? Yes. Do you refinish them? No, not in that sense of the word. Guitars are always going to have more(give me a word) than guns.
2017 joe said in 36 months there would be no more brick and mortar shops. Its 2020 and we had pandemic and now national protests. Brick and mortar shops are all closed. Thanks joe.
Part of it is due to technology and part to the younger people now. They don't want to spend the many hours a day practicing, or playing dives to 3 people, paying their dues. Everything is on demand now, if you can't have it right NOW or within 2 days with free shipping they don't want to bother. They're not willing to put the work in that it takes, like Joe Bonnamasa did. Just listen to today's click track auto tune garbage music.
It sounds great, but not even close to Greeny, Knopfler’s 58, Kossoff’s 59, Bloomfield’s, or Stripe, imho. And, i don’t die for Joe’s Music (but is a Pope, nowadays), but it’s a great guy, and always a pleasure listening him
A guitar is meant to be played. No matter how old it is, who has owned it in the past, who made it....whatever. It's a piece of wood with strings. Good on Joe. Wish Blackie, Rory's Strat and SRV's No.1 were still out there being played. That's what they need.
I hear Joe's father use to flip vintage guitars for a living, I've been doing the same thing since 1973, Except there's nothing out there anymore, I would like to hear from Joe's Father sometime talk about Buying/Selling vintage guitars 25 years ago and having Joe come with him as a Kid.
Kevin Amralle and Justin beiber grade 'artist' . what a shame . equally bad is hearing jaylo sing without her trusty autotuner. autotuner is just beyond forgiveness.
"So Joe, are you gonna be collecting forever? R u gonna buy a bigger house?"- "Nah, I m in a place where I need to stop...Im not gonna buy a bigger house" ....This hasn't aged well Joe, has it :) Cudos to the guy though, he has the assets, he does his thing. And I would prefer ANY expensive guitar in the hands of a guy like Joe who actually plays them rather than a non-guitar player collector who stores them in a warehouse forever. These guitars are...guitars. They were meant to be played.
Thanks for your response. I went to Google and typed in various Joe's guitar collections and the last one I read he wrote..." I shy away from Gretsch guitars and Rickenbackers." I would like to see he has at least 1 or 2 Rics...better yet...I'd love to see him play one. Maybe he doesn't like them.
I hope he one day unloads one of his tweed amps on me at a reasonable price so that I can play it for the rest of my life and will it back to him if I ever die before him. I'm 3 years younger than JB but I've smoked for a long time, so chances are, he'll outlive me. I'm also from Upstate NY like he is.
beano1eye mike hickey threads the strings with leftover string balls, thats why the stick out like that. Its to keep the string knots from knicking your palm.
I do totally agree with Joe - piss off the Mac books and DJs. Joe, Jimi, SRV - all just a few pedals, guitar and amp. No bs. They had the the talent, did they hit every note? Hell no! But that was part of, the rawness, pure musicianship. And sometimes those ‘errors’ gave it more life, more dynamics. I hate even using digital pedals! And I’ll never want an amp that’s not tube. Hurts when I see bands like Metallica going to kempers or fractals. If I want to hear a Marshall tone, I want to hear it from a bloody Marshall! I could understand a smaller band who has to cut costs but a huge band like Metallica doing it is, to me, wrong.

My father was there the first time Joe played at Bogarts! He sat right next to his father, how cool to hear him mention it.
ParkerP929 oh wow , that's awesome.

I love Joe's attitude about playing these guitars instead of just displaying them.
Listen man, he's a blues icon. He can urinate on the damn thing and it will still hold its value. Its not the same story for a wealthy doctor.
I don't think there is anyone else on the planet who knows more, or who has played more guitars and amps than Joe. God Bless this crazy dude!
Regardless of if you like his music or not, Joe B. is a treasure. The thing that I admire about him the most is just how normal he is. He is one of us. One of the brightest and level headed players today (and plays like no other). I would like to talk guitars with that guy. He knows a lot.

I played a gig last night and went out of pocket 650$, but my lineup was paid and I played my heart out to keep live music alive
He cherishes every guitar and plays them saving heritage of music

Why does it make me so nervous they way he is holding that Les Paul. A couple times I gasped. Great show, thanks for the information.

I saw this show (ACL) from the second row and it was one of the most entertaining shows I have ever seen.
Joe you are not a grumpy old man... you are a man in love with the music scene and you don't like to see her being done wrong! You are also a phenomenal artist... one who is incidently picking up fans through you tube and people sharing.
Love the Austin City Limits hat..saw that show and he played Amos most of the night
Perhaps my favorite top and ideal lemon burst finish imo. This burst and the red eye burst are my all time favorite
i played the skinner burst before Joe bought it..right through a 100watt marshall at rumble seat
Donald Boyajian some things just leave their mark on you, as I’m sure that did. Very lucky guy!!

Yes there it is!!! To me that particular 59 is perfect in look and sound. This 59 is very similar to bernie's Beast. Same color.
We don't even have a guitar store anymore. And we live in a big city. He's right.

I have been lucky enough to play 3 bursts (a '58, '59 and a '60). Never owned one but I'm fine with that. :)
Places like Gruhns and Norms will probably last. I just hope that the small places stay alive long enough for me to get to America.
rudys nyc thank God!!
I played 4 59 58 real LP at gruhns on 4 floor..most people don't know it's there, plus buddy holly amp and guitar were there
Agree with Joe, its hard to see the "Live" music scene dying! Ouch
Part of it is due to technology and part to the younger people now. They don't want to spend the many hours a day practicing, or playing dives to 3 people, paying their dues. The live music is very saturated. Often times not even involving instruments
The ultimate guitar geek. Proud to call myself one too. My passion runs very deep for over 45 years. Just wish I could play 1/10 that well .
It sounds great, but not even close to Greeny, Knopfler’s 58, Kossoff’s 59, Bloomfield’s, or Stripe, imho. And, i don’t die for Joe’s Music (but is a Pope, nowadays), but it’s a great guy, and always a pleasure listening him
Ah the Knopfler's 58...
13 Gibson 1959 Les Paul guitars he owns I think I saw more in his other videos
A guitar is meant to be played. No matter how old it is, who has owned it in the past, who made it....whatever. It's a piece of wood with strings. Good on Joe. Wish Blackie, Rory's Strat and SRV's No.1 were still out there being played. That's what they need.
What is the brown and green Stratocaster Joe is holding at the beginning of the video?

I Don't know You mean ? :)
BEAUTIFUL GUITARS!!! BEAUTIFUL EVVVVVERRRRRYTHINNNG!!!!
The fact Joe made that scratch doesnt take $1000 of, it adds value
I have 1 HARLEY BENTON Rosewood "TELE" for $153 ... Sounds like a DREAM!!!
Haha I have my eyes on a TE-52, gotta get my twang on!
I agree to that, that it needs to end the itunes or digital concert. Sooner, bcoz its not the concert the way it is.
Kevin Amralle and Justin beiber grade 'artist' . what a shame .

Kevin Amralle yep when you’re playing an iPad it’s not an instrument.

The Lt Blue Guitar in the intro Looks like a Firebird 1...? Am I right Professor Joe?
Damn it...I wanted to hear Joe's comments on that Rickenbacker. Does anyone know if he even owns one? He never plays any as far as I've seen.
Me too !
sunking2001 He owns a few, but never plays them live!
How do you know he owns a few?
sunking2001 Im following Joe on Social Media for years and he always post his latest guitar additions. A few Rickenbackers (3-4) included! xx

That lick at 3:50 sounds like the intro to Cliffs of Dover.
The first time I ever heard Joe that’s all I heard was Eric
These guys are nuts. Its just a guitar! ,He looks older than 39 ,Heard him a few times???? singing?. good player ,Would be a good teacher.
I had a 63 64 65 66 strat and once refretted- they came alive
There is enough room for everyone, it’s the industry that only wants to focus on one thing!
Whats that song at 0:09? Sounds very nice :)
Found it 'Mountain Climbing'
BLUES of Desperation !
Different interview he says skinnerburst was 480k not 236k
I could be wrong, but I think they were saying that's what it went for at auction well before he bought it, not what he paid.
Damn !!!
I waited 7 minutes in vain for Joe to play that awsome Rickenbacker...
I think that Les Paul is only going to increase in value as it is owned and played by JB.....regardless of any scratches.
Wait did he say 13 sunburst Les Pauls?
14 GUITAR STORES VINTAGE AND NEW WHERE I LIVE WITHIN 15 MILES OF WEST LA.
Still?
SWEEEEET SWEEEEEET SHADOW!!!!!
Lafayette Indiana!!!
I agree with Joe, a 10,000 sq ft house is big enough.
I was nervous about that $300.000 L.P. the whole time. So casually sitting in their laps like that.
That Thee Guitar !!!! Hands down. Jimmy Page
Well said Joe! Pressing Play on an IPad is so lame.
Joe is correct; it's not a concert if your listening on your iPad. Go live! Support live music!
The last t-rex, pondering the grey skies of impact winter :(
Wow, y'all have edyamacayshun in Kentucky? Who'd have thawt!
Rockin' Joe!
Electricaltricity too
Being terrified of DUIs also has had a tremendously bad effect on the club scene
Nick Trierweiler hear ya bro.But being a cab driver and a guitar player......
I'd rather have no clubs than have drunks on the road.
"Worlds most amazing American instruments"?
Brandon Townsend I'm going to go out on a limb and say , its due to the fundamental change these guitars caused in music .
4:15 what's going on with the string balls?

I bet Joe doesn't want to tell how much he paid because he got a super good deal..
Or he just considers it vulgar to blurt out what's certainly a massive number.
It was designed to be the ultimate instrument for a musician, so what if he plays it.
Can't even find live bands much anymore.
It's sad that Joe has removed himself from the internet
I'm just hoping I don't scratch my rare 2011 Macbook Pro 17"... I can't afford having it devalued by $1000...
for that kinda money get Gibson to make the best new versions for a couple thousand each
So he paid $165000? For it!??
For his first one it sounds like, not the one shown here. That's actually fairly low for what genuine bursts go for now. Most of them cost in the neighborhood of $300,000.
mike looks like eric cartmen when he dressed up as a special needs kid.
guitars guitars guitars, ehgggh´, never enough
If that other dude flips his bangs out of his face one more time I'm gonna throw up

id buy one and sand the neck satin. then watch all the collectors have a heart attack
Every Scratch is 1000$ less, what about greeny.
Joe Paid $165,000 for that guitar. Ask me how I know ?

That makes me cringe for some reason. Lol

Joe's great but way too over productive album wise. Overproductivity sucks
The hair flipping guy needs a haircut
the guy has a problem. he needs help.
Jason all the gear he ever bought cost less than one year of drugs for guns and roses lol
IDK about that. Just off of what he's made public, Joe has an instrument collection that easily edges into the tens of millions of dollars in value.
Cringe

Mike needs to get a hair cut
Nice guitar, but hows he make a burst sound so bad?
i feel sorry for these guys. their lives must be so empty.
Do you have fun trolling?
Jason owning a 59 les paul is the opposite of empty.
I’m 20
Thousands. Debt thanks to buying guitars and I don’t care , guitars are worth the expense
Dude just go the Eddie van Halen route and mod cheap guitars!
