  • Axis of Awesome's song 4 Chords was a fantastic satire on the overuse of the I, V, vi, IV chord progression. Believe it or not Dream Theater (among many other musicians) have also used this progression.....but they put a little twist on it.

My thoughts and experience exactly. They opened a gate of appreciation, a way of open-mindedness, a gold mine of multiple musical pieces and much more. It's a miracle they hit me in the right time and place. Who knows if I was younger or older, it would have worked out differently. Gladly it didn't.

I think you should make music theory education videos into a regular series. This was more comprehensible than anything I've seen from most music teachers. It did require some prior knowledge, but still an excellent example based explanation.

      He did tuscany on SSF
He really likes in the presence of enemies (pt 1 more than 2)
He says scenes from a memory is one of their best albums objectively (but its not his favorite)

Pervis, this is an adolescent phase that most of us (hopefully) grow out of. When you're young and typically male you look for ways to differentiate yourself from your peers, and if you have a technical affinity you devote a lot of time to learning about music theory for the sake of it, which causes you to get totally one sided and limited. But then you get older and hopefully develop some taste and look back and say "god what a fool I used to be".
But I can save you a lot of time right now by telling you to not do this. Learn some great music from great bands and try to not be intimidated or impressed by dry technical terminology (lots of fancy sounding names for mostly simple stuff). If you spend your youth listening to Dream Theater all the time you will essentially turn yourself into a one-dimensional music nerd (and typically a cocky one who pretends he's got some greater insight when it comes to music- BUT DOESN'T). You are what you listen to just like you are what you eat. And Dream Theater is like the fancy-named dish at the casino food court.

      Matt Markus
No, I learned music theory for songwriting and to be better at guitar and I'm a teen. So, it's not really a differentiating feature from my peers, it's something I wanted to learn because I'm really interested and invested on it, the same might be for the one who wrote the comment.
Pardon my grammatical errors, I have trouble wording my expressions

I’ve never quite been able to get into Dream Theater for some reason. Why I constantly scratch my head about. I respect THE FUCK out of their sheer talent, and what they’re doing, It just doesn’t grab me for some reason... This song though... I actually really dig it. I think it might be something tonaly or timbrally? Then again, it just might be that I haven’t heard enough of their stuff yet. I actually didn’t like Floyd at first, but it’s really grown on me in recent years For the record I actually went and listened to the whole track, and yeah, it really comes together when considered as a piece.
Mind you, though I haven’t been able to get into them much (and it might be just not finding the right gateway songs for me yet) their skill, the way they work the music into service of the theme of the song (and this one’s a REALLY good example of it).

Always saw the Ministry of Lost Souls as a fucking GEM of subtle brilliant composition, and no one ever talks about it, or even knows the song beside the bigger DT fans. Thanks for bringing it to the light brah. And that's without touching on the ridiculous instrumental section in the middle leading TO this outro. Or the whole first 6 or 7 ish minutes building ever so subtly into the heavy section, leaving their development behind for something completely different, only to come back and tweak it again in said outro!

Dreamtheater is my favorite band. They're music theory techniques aren't exactly original though they borrow heavily from just, standard classical music. It is awesome to see it applied to metal of course, i mean, thats a huge part of prog music. What really makes dreamtheater special for me is have clever they are when building melodies and patterns for vocals. And the lyrics. Absolute brilliant lyricists and somehow, they make the music speak the words, if that makes sense? Like, i feel like i understand what james sings even if he were to sing in gibberish, thats how great of a relationship their music has to their lyrics. That's important to me, developing atmosphere

I had a roommate who was a huge DT fan, even convinced me to go to a show with him back in ‘98, and I have always casually “liked” them; but over the last couple years I have rediscovered DT and finally “get it”, for all the reasons you state...it’s the difference between sipping an expensive scotch and slamming jack and cokes!

Well, after listening to Charlie Dominici's solo albums I came to a conclusion that DT would have lost nothing, and maybe even gain something, had Dominici not been replaced by LaBrie. They would sound quite perfect with Charlienas well, but still, as for today, James is the best singer they coud dream of - although maybe not the best singer in the world, but hey, for his age he keeps his form quite well, most of the welk known singers after ten years or even less already could not sing their early material, couldn't take all the high notes. So, for all LaBrie haters and dislikers - well, friends, with different singer that could be much worse today!

+C.A.C.A C.A.C.A Not that there's anything wrong with that though, everyone understands different topics at different rates. This holds true for musicians as well, some of the most critically acclaimed musicians know diddly-squat about theory, but they're still considered great.

I'm in the sort of get it group. I have enough music experience (piano, violin, trumpet, guitar, drums never really proficient at any of them but decent) that I just get things, but many more complicated things go over my head a little bit.

mike, I just wanna thank you. I've never been a big dream theater fan. I love metal. But I've always been more into A7X, Trivium, Stone sour, bands like that. But after watching this video I went and listened to the ministry of lost souls and I just kept listening to more. so thanks for opening up my eyes! P.S. I find these kinds of music theory videos super interesting. I think it would be awesome if you want over some more dream theater songs.

YEAH! I rly like your BREAKDOWN of the underlying theory. I'm definitely gonna use this way of altering chords in my own songwriting as well :) thnx breaking down some of the great ideas that the DT members expressed so geniously in this outro.

Agree completely about Ministry of lost souls. One of the most underrated DT pieces and the outro is the one you can listen to on a loop for hours and it just never gets boring. And it's not just the guitar solo but the drums are fantastic. :)

Always forget how beautiful that song is sometimes. This album gets lost sometimes on how good it really is with Octavarium on one side and BCASL on the other. Personally, my favorite moment in a DT song is the solo on Under a Glass Moon from Images and Words. It has so much passion and is, to my ear, a metalized version of just a standard jazz solo, complete with whammy bar whamming. Always love the snob videos man, keep going!

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it in the comments, but consider this:
The MoLS outro chord progression starts in A minor, then modulates up a minor 3rd to repeat the progression in C minor. Then does the same minor 3rd modulation to play the chord progression again, now in Eb minor. Now in the song, it fades out. And as Mike says, we never get to know how the chord progression is resolved or eventually ends.
    HOWEVER...
What if there was no fade out, and the chord progression kept going? Well, then it would eventually modulate up yet another minor 3rd to Gb/F# minor. Repeat it again, and your back in A minor. Repeat, now back in C minor. Repeat, Eb minor and so on and so on. The point being is there is no intended resolution or ending to this chord progression cycle; it is supposed to loop through these modulations for infinity; almost as if it were LOST.
Also note that the four home keys we modulate through in the cycle spell out a fully diminished 7th chord (a-c-eb-gb). A full diminished 7th is a chord I would consider to be the most distressing sounding you could make that uses conventional tertiary harmony, and I think that's pretty neat when you add it to the context of the endless chord progression.

I agree with everything you said! A very important thing, that few people get, is that for music, there is an important word: purpose.
If people want to dance, DT is not the band, if they want to headbang, there are plenty of metal bands out there.
different tastes do not make other music bad. Just for a different purpose.
    But I'm drunk, so whatever.

I've seen DT 7 times, going as far back as the Awake tour right after they got radio airplay with Pull Me Under. I've been following them since 1993. I saw them on Long Island at a bar and stood 1 foot away from John Petrucci all night like it was nothing. I was a member of the fan club and have all their autographs. I used to own a Ibanez JPM P3. I raise my glass to you good sir. I'm an Eagles fan too.

Never realized the chromatic decent in Ministry of Lost souls before, guess I was never examining it too much but glad to see more love for the tune. I feel it's often over-looked in the DT library.
I'm also for the fade-out in the song. There's few places I think fade-outs are good but in Ministry I think it lends to the lyrical themes of the song.

Dude, you are awesome. The Ministry outro has always been one of my favorite DT moments. That F Minor is absolutely chilling. I’ve always thought that the choice to make it minor in the first segment, and go for the more standard F Major in the second half is genius. I thought I was the only person who cared about this stuff until now, because nobody else I know seems to connect to DT like I do.
