Thank you, Carla. I thought about having a pet owl, but I learned about these raptors not being a quality every day pet. They are serious business, and I will admire them from afar.
Saw one perched behind my parents house and it looked like a cat! My co-worker hit one on the road and went back and got her to try and bring her back to life, she was beautiful ☺️ however, she passed on from the injuries. Really appreciated him for caring so much.
I've always wanted to have a relationship with an owl, they are incredible creatures. Owls and corvids are definitely my favorite birds. I truly love your animal adventures, too cool!
Read the book Wesley the Owl. It's about a researcher who takes an injured baby owl home (reluctantly) and it becomes imprinted on her. Some of the things Wesley does is cute like trying to brush his teeth and wash his face, are cute but others would be horrifying for the typical pet owner. It is a heartwarming story but realistic as well.
What an awesome little documentary on Karla and the owls, this lady deserves a lot of credit indeed for all the work she has done and is still doing to make this world a better place for owls. And it is so good to see this place again which I am lucky to call my home in America.

Here in the UK one of the suspected reasons we now have Eurasian Eagle Owls in the wild is because people who had seen Harry Potter and wanted an owl for themselves brought them over and when they got too big (and start to chase around the pet dog) they opened the door and let them leave.
@@eagles_s I don’t exactly agree with that. I believe that you can have an owl but only if you’re qualified in falconry. I just think at the end of the day anyone who wants to look after an owl (or a bird of prey) should have the proper qualifications and abilities to respect these powerful birds. And on top of that it should also be a breeders mission to make sure these birds are going to the right people.
@@eggy-potter Ill clarify, nobody should be allowed to have an owl as a housepet. Its an Apex predator, would you keep a Lion or a Black Bear? It makes me wonder if there's some single species of owl that could be captive bred over X generations to become kinda like our large herps, and help fund conservation - somewhat like Tom Crutchfield says, "Conservation through commercialization." I mean, we risk a lot of the same stuff with herps that birds of prey keepers do, though it seems BOPs are much more unpredictable. Just a thought, I know very little about owls other than they are cool and that little one was adorable lol.
They have to put signs out at my local trails due to howl attacks during mating season. It’s interesting that our owl, rabbit, & coyote population has exploded in the last 10 years even tho the area has seen a heavy increase in human population. Great video 👍
Awesome animals. Would've loved to have one at home, but that's obviously not going to happen. Great video and that lady is just incredible. So super informative, well spoken, honest, interesting and caring, all at once. That's rare. Good job guys.
It only took me one internet search to dispel my thoughts of getting an owl as a pet. Along with the ones listed in this video, there are several more really important reasons why they do not make good pets and I wish everyone did that one internet search to find out. Thanks for the video.
Great work educating people about owls. We live near the center of Akron , Ohio and we have Barred and Great-horned Owls in our neighborhood. The Barred Owl has roosted in our backyard.
I’m in Canada and would loveeeeee to own an owl id be the best owl daddy ever . But it’s illegal. I wish one would like find me and ask me for help and I’d step up and give the bird the world. Hi Dav, so wonderful to see you expanding your work and covering all sorts of amazing animals. I highly recommend falconry if you've never tried it yet - sometimes they include owls, which is a really lovely experience flying those. I flew a long eared owl and a barn owl, two of our UK natives. Always incredible to witness how soft and silent those feathers are! 🦉
@@DavKaufmansAdventures So keeping owls as pets is sooo terrible because they poop and stuff but using them to hunt for one's recreation, totally cool.
As much as I would love to have a pet owl, now knowing the amount of work that goes into it, it's nice to know that legally you need to show you're damn well prepared for it.
Found either a baby Screecher or baby Great Horn in my house today. Fascinating animals, literally adapted to me within the minutes of me finding it a safe tree.
Gorgeous owls! Love them! It's like cat with wings! Both are mysterious in different ways and very independent. Very enjoyable and informative video! Thanks!
I have been watching your herp vids for YEARS, but I never knew about this channel! I know what I'll be binging on today, while waiting for appointments! I'm VERY interested in your parrot morph and hybrid video, because I own 2 macaws.....I love ornithology and entomology, as much as herpetology! Zeke, my B&G, is going to be 29 on July 1st, 2022. I got him as a 4wk old chick, hand reared him and began enrichment excersizes, as soon as he became fairly well coordinated. As a juvenile, Zeke blossomed into an incredibly loving, highly intelligent and exceptionally funny, macaw.... yes, he possesses a sense of humor! The more I laugh, the more he reacts, ultimately we wind up laughing at each other! My Harlequin was adopted in 2004....she was abandoned @ my best friend's specialty store for over 6 months. My bff told me about BeBe after my 54 y.o. Geenwing passed. I was devastated over Julietta's death, so I chose to turn my crippling grief, into something positive. When I met BeBe, it was evident that she suffered from emotional trauma. She had plucked her chest and back clean, exposing her delicate, pink skin. Besides that damaging behavior, she also got a taste for blood. Apparently the plucking served the purpose of not only stress relief, but also a tasty treat, BLECH. (I took her to a vet before taking her home, for a CBC and checkup. The bloodwork came back normal, no anemia. Other than plucking, she was a healthy weight, had bright eyes, a clean cere and clear nares AND she was very active and believe it or not, she was talkative! When I got her home, of course she was immediatly aggressive toward me, however I was prepared for the task of showing her that not all females were abusive. It's taken years to get her to a place where she allows me to gently pet her anywhere, without biting me. Neither one of my parrots are caged in my new home. Videos of my last home, that are featured on my channel, show open cages..... however when I moved, it was imperative to build custom Manzanita "trees". Each macaw has an 8 foot, double decker habitat, with lots of places to perch, as well as areas to lay down (with big, soft towels) for a siesta. Each tree also has a 5 foot x 5 foot base, filled with a thick layer of crushed walnut shell litter. The litter gets sifted with a collander, weekly, and it looks so much better than newspaper! It also absorbs odors of macaw guano too, haha! Both birds seem to enjoy their habitats and they each have lots of places to attach enrichment and foraging toys. I wish that I could show you my set up, it's really cool (if I do say so myself, haha). Perhaps I'll make a new video this Thursday, if anyone is interested in seeing the habitats. I hope that you're still active on this channel.....it would be kinda tragic if I wrote out this entire diatribe, but no one would ever come across it Take care! 😆😆😆💕
What do you do when an owl chooses You? I have a small owl that has set up house around my backyard. The Owl perches and sleeps in the bamboo over my patio and also up under a very old juniper, where there's owl poop on the branch and ground, but not on the patio. so considerate, so I really believe I've been somehow chosen, for what?
yes we have rodents roaming the gardens, who doesn't. also, squirrels, rabbits, bullfinches and their chickadee and various other avian friends, I have a pond so it's a known watering spot, we have lots of stop ins and baths, hawks too !
Ruby is about the most perfect looking owl... despite all the complexities and danger i still mildly fantasize about having an owl like that just chilling by my side
Back when Alice was at the old nature center Karla let me get close and snap a absolutely fantastic picture of Alice. Karla is great and does amazing work. Also a great video 👍
They're SO fascinating. Some of their faces look more human than any other animal. They also have that cat bird combo thing, some. Hookbills(parrot) types, corvids, owls ; many in superior- inelligence range in myriad aspects.
Really a good educational video about owls. The inprint to humans thing is what most people forget also applies to parrots. Most parrots also pair up with a mate. Thats why lots of pple have problems with their parrot being agressive to other familymembers exept for one. That is if you want a parrot for the whole family do your research first and pick a spiecies that "wont rip your face off" if you are not its mate. Btw that goes for ANY pet. Do your research and never ever buy an animal just beacause it is cute. Myself I stick to chickens when it comes to birds. I do think the hen is really intresting, they have lots of " language" and interaction between themselves and since they live in groups they are quite intrested to interact with " their human" also.
Myself I am utterly satisfied with the wild owls that live at my farm. We have a pair of "Strix aluco" ( Catowl in Swedish) that hangs around here and have been for years, we do have a lot of big old trees in the garden and the forrest is ten minutes walk away. Sometimes in the nights when I go out to feed the horses I can see them fly. And I do hear them almost every evening. Really lovely and beautiful birds- and they take a lot of rodents too! Really valuable at a farm!
I do think there are owl species that are honestly easier and less dangerous to take care of than most large monitors. Great horn owls, barn owls, screech owls, are among the easiest in my opinion.
Answer: Probably not. But we could totally breed a subspecies of pet owl to love us like we love them..... And breed them to be smarter... And floofier. This idea is genius and NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.
I had two owls at my house they were there before I rented the house. They were tawny frog mouth. I admired them from a distance. I love 💕 owls so much but they deserve to be in the wild.
Eagle-Owls: I saw one at a Renaissance Pleasure Faire one summer weekend a few years ago in Southern California. The guy holding her (?) was dressed up as Conan the Barbarian and looked the part. He had a thick leather "bracer" tied to his left forearm and this THING was sitting on it with its huge claws wrapped ENTIRELY AROUND HIS ARM AND OVERLAPPING (and he had arms like Schwarzenegger!). It had the beak of an eagle and the huge eyes of an owl and when it spread its wings, it was wider than the guy was tall! It was, by far, the most dangerous-looking flying thing I have ever seen, including some dragons in fantasy movies (reality has a way of intensifying the effects!). And until then I had not even known such things existed. What a powerful way to learn otherwise!
I found a nestling western screech owl on my property 2 days ago. I see the hole it came out of. There has been no sign of the parents. It was on the ground for at least 2 days I know of, today I brought it inside and fed it some bugs I caught, tomoro I’ll go get it some mealworms and pinky mice. I gotta try to save the little guy, I’m not looking for a pet, maybe like a wild and free but friendly tenant for the barn…
If you hand raise them they are excellent pets. Otherwise they make excellent neighbors. I have a ZERO rat problem. And the squirrels have become VERY polite. No pigeons and I live pretty close to a park.
Ah, owls. Cat software on bird hardware. (They're very fascinating birds.)

I mean, we risk a lot of the same stuff with herps that birds of prey keepers do, though it seems BOPs are much more unpredictable.
I have such an appreciation for those beautiful birds. They are definitely not a good pet . Great information!👍
So do I! They are amazing!
It's easy to see this lady loves what she does, alot of info. Great video!
Glad you enjoy it!
They’re so gorgeous unbelievably amazing looking animals and the hooting they make is so relaxing and calming.
I love how the lady treats and talks about the owls. Loved the video what nice animals are owls
They are called cat head hawk in Chinese. 🦉
those owls are really cute! they look very healthy too
Hi Dav, so wonderful to see you expanding your work and covering all sorts of amazing animals. I highly recommend falconry if you've never tried it yet - sometimes they include owls, which is a really lovely experience flying those. I flew a long eared owl and a barn owl, two of our UK natives. Always incredible to witness how soft and silent those feathers are! 🦉
Thank you! I have a friend that's into falconry. I'll film him and his work one day
@@DavKaufmansAdventures So keeping owls as pets is sooo terrible because they poop and stuff but using them to hunt for one's recreation, totally cool.
Very Good and Informative Fifteen Minutes. Thank you for sharing.
As much as I would love to have a pet owl, now knowing the amount of work that goes into it, it's nice to know that legally you need to show you're damn well prepared for it.
Is it me or is she incredibly humble?
Found either a baby Screecher or baby Great Horn in my house today.
Fascinating animals, literally adapted to me within the minutes of me finding it a safe tree.
3:16 as soon as he heard that, he want to scare the owl
great video! educational on owls themselves and helping stop the practice of impulse buying exotic pets.
She uses metric system...i love it
Gorgeous owls! Love them! It's like cat with wings! Both are mysterious in different ways and very independent. Very enjoyable and informative video! Thanks!
Wonderful birds and so beautiful...but I'll appreciate them at a distance ...thank you.
Out of respect for these owls I’ll finish my fantasy of having one as a pet... damn
😆😆😆💕
Aww, they’re such beautiful animals! 🥰 I guess I’m going to keep admiring them from a distance and sticking with cats 😅😁
Lots of jokes about owls being sky cats or cat/owls lol.
Love the eastern screech owls and always have. The barn owls have an interesting appearance...
Short answer: Maybe....
Maybe but don't risk it
Back when Alice was at the old nature center Karla let me get close and snap a absolutely fantastic picture of Alice. Karla is great and does amazing work. Also a great video 👍
Dude I live in Southern MN. Thanks for showing me this.
They're SO fascinating. Some of their faces look more human than any other animal.
They also have that cat
bird combo thing, some. Hookbills(parrot) types, corvids, owls ; many in
superior- inelligence range in myriad aspects.
Amazing lady doing amazing things with amazing animals!
I agree!
Awwww - it’s so cute... Ow, ow OWW it’s attacking me!
Yes you can have them as a pet. I own two European eagle owl!! Good with kids, dogs and cat
thats cool. do they stay in the house?
I mean we did this with wolfs which became dogs soo
Owls are so alluring with their mystique energy
This was a wonderful video!
Protective just like he said. This lady is like a know-it-all😆
That is so much cuter than the secret of nymh. I thought screech owls were enormous. How cool!
How come I never saw this channel, this is heaven.
Has a owl actually ever ripped someone's face off ? Is that true or is she being sarcastic?
I found a nestling western screech owl on my property 2 days ago. I see the hole it came out of. There has been no sign of the parents. It was on the ground for at least 2 days I know of, today I brought it inside and fed it some bugs I caught, tomoro I’ll go get it some mealworms and pinky mice. I gotta try to save the little guy, I’m not looking for a pet, maybe like a wild and free but friendly tenant for the barn…
Beautiful how well the owls are cared for
If you hand raise them they are excellent pets. Otherwise they make excellent neighbors. I have a ZERO rat problem. And the squirrels have become VERY polite. No pigeons and I live pretty close to a park.
So all I need is a cat and a owl and I'm rodent free
@@blackbookt.vchannel7616 your owl will eat the cat too

Larry Totter? You go to the coolest places. Alice has the best job in the world. Period. Love those lil screechers. Great vid Dav, very well done.
That's him! lol
I’m the sort of person that REALLY wants a pet owl and fox, but knows that I’d be a horrible owner so I don’t get them
1:45 that face
Looks like she’s gonna kill u lol
No she is a beautiful owl.
@@mauthemau6260 he didn't say the owl isn't beutifull...
Great interview, very informative, these are amazing and beautiful birds, thanks a lot!!
