  • Being able to manipulate arm rods on your puppet will help give the illusion of life. In this Video, Andrew Agee teaches how to effectively use arm rods to give your puppet that extra push to help offer up that suspension of disbelief that every effective puppeteer wants from their audience. no problem, as an Okie puppeteer myself, it was a real loss when he had his wreck. He was an awesome puppeteer.

*I have a question, what arm rods are those, the only ones I could find are super visible and I observed the one you use is thin yet sturdy, which is good because you can barely see it, even though you have much control over the arms. Basically what I’m saying is that all the remotely thin wire I’ve come across is super flimsy, but yours seems so much easier to control, and it’s practically invisible. So could you tell me where you got it please? Thanks stay safe.*

amzn.to/3819Dcl The ones he has here might be the 18 in. Also the ones you can readily find now have foam grips, the ones in the video has dowel rod grips.

If you want me to believe YOU are a "Master" , quit making your puppet's head bob up & down like it's on a POGO stick! That's a CLEAR sign of an AMATUER

Held off on responding simply because I try not to entertain the trolls that often. If you were referring to the operation of the orange monstro puppet in the beginning, then you weren't paying attention, because at no point was the "master" comment about the operator of that puppet, but rather the other guy who actually gave the lesson. He was killed in a car wreck in Tulsa. This video was a tribute to him.
Now as for the Monstro puppet in the beginning. I have been doing puppetry, professionally, since I was 12. I primarily now work with churches, nonprofits and children's medical facilities to teach teams how to use puppetry to communicate. The puppeteer of that monstro puppet, was a student that was still learning, but proud of the accomplishments they had made in such a short time. I, the instructor, was quite proud of what they did as well.
So, lets now address your comment as I am still quite livid at the comment, but as an instructor, my first goal is to teach. I watched your first video, "Uncle Luigi's Excited about the International ConVENTion!!" 1. You attempted to use your puppet as a vent act, while having no concept of ventriloquism. It looked as if you attempted not to move your lips in your first sentence, but after that, you just gave up on it. 2. Lip sync. whether you are doing vent or behind the stage work, the first lessons I teach are with lip control; not biting your words. #3. This one I give you a pass on because you had such a top-heavy puppet while sitting in a chair, but watch flipping the lid. Like I said, a slight pass can be given. One trick that you can work with is slightly bobbing the head forward on your syllables. This will bring the weight a little forward and forces the head to go down instead of popping up. This is the attempt that was made in the video that you were trolling about; they just got a little too over anxious with it. 4. Eye focus. If you are having a conversation with the puppet, it's the same as having a conversation with a person. In most cultures it is rude not to look at the person you are talking to. In fact, if you make a point to not look at them, it comes off as being disingenuous and, in the perspective of a puppet show, it can ruin the suspension of disbelief. The puppet should primarily look at the person it is communicating with. In the perspective of your video, this would have been you with an occasional glance at the camera from you and the puppet. Second aspect of this was that the puppet eyes never even looked at the camera. If the puppet is on camera, the camera and the puppet is communicating with the audience, the audience is the camera, so focus the eyes into the audience. In this case it would be the camera. All I can think of is that you were recording this on a computer and you had the puppet focusing on the monitor instead of the camera. 5. Stay away from taboo topics. If you are overweight or your puppet is overweight and you are making jabs at each other, that is one thing, it does alienate some of your audience though if they are very sensitive. However, if you are having a drawn-out conversation about a third-party individual, it is just insulting, gossipy and cringy. Then, on that same vein, "...in the OH Damn category"? That is straight from Gabriel Eglasias (Fluffy). Do not use other people's material in your acts unless you have their permission. It's unprofessional and could possibly lead to a lawsuit. 6. Last but not least. The comments about Darcy Lynn; if you had read the other comments on this video, you would have caught that he was from Oklahoma, where we were from, so it's a safe bet that quite possibly I have some connection to Darcy Lynn and her family who live in Edmond, where I went to college. I am sure they will find it just as cringy that this old man is talking about how cute she is in the manner by which you were speaking. You are aware that she is still a minor right?
Now, I jumped on the Vent haven website and pulled up this year's group photo. It took me 20 seconds to locate you and Luigi on the far left, lower mid frame. I can assure you that if I had been able to make it this last year, you and I would have had this conversation in person, possibly in front of Mark Wade who would have gladly taken you to the woodshed for trolling other puppeteers when you are at the obvious novice stage that you are. The Junior Ventriloquist mic night is Mark's baby so to know that someone your age was trolling a 14-year-old because they were bobbing their head too much for you, especially after watching one of your videos, yeah, if you did open mic, I had six friends there that love heckling guys like you. That being said, I hope that you enjoyed yourself and learned a lot.
I am really not a jerk, I am just over protective of my students, especially the younger ones who have self-image issues and I can get them to use puppetry to get out of their shell only to have people like you slander them. Do better, you are old enough.

SO, I totally don't end on a negative note, I ran through your other videos and one thing you do have an understanding of is voice manipulation. Some of the voices lose resonance at times, but pretty good. Be careful with the rat's voice though, I can see where a long performance with that character could cause you some throat issues.

Great ideas, but very hard to see how you're holding your hands. Maybe film your hands with a GoPro on your head?

good idea. the guy in the video isn't me though. he died a few years ago in a car accident. I just came across the video and thought I would honor him by getting his talent out there. Good idea though, I eventually want to get a go pro.

Remember the video of him is from years ago, it wasn't originally a RUclips video, it was part of a VHS training series he worked on for his parents' church.
