It's a stunning image Gary. I however prefer the blurry sky but that's one of the great things about photography.

Your tutorials are in depth but at a speed you can follow. Rather than sped up or not showing integral parts. You motivate me to try some more photoshop stuff.... But I'd prefer to just be on location.

Brilliant, i often struggle with long exposure skies, i think its hard to get colors correct in the sky so from now on i will try this and see if i like it more !

It's not everybody's cup of tea but have done it as well. Sometimes the sky just looks better when it is crisp. Sometimes I have used a long exposure for the sky, just not as long. It keeps the feel but doesn't draw attention to itself. Great location and images, lots to see.

Really interesting vlog Gary...I have to say I think I still lean towards the blurry sky and sea, not so much because they're blurry but more because I like the way it really focuses the eye on the static elements like the pier. I love that look of pinpoint sharpness against a background of movement. Makes the images really come alive. Good stuff.

Really useful vlog with much to think about and do.
Just one question: You used B&W for the vlog, yet another of your finished shots was colour. I noted that you used a 10 stop for the water and 'natural' for the sky. How do you manage the colour cast you will have had with the 10 stop? Do you use the 'natural' sky as a colour reference and apply to the '10 stop'? If so, how?
(I'm a LrC and PS user, though expect the process to be very similar)
Thank you for your channel - one of my 'go-to'.

Adding a non-blurry (still) sky to a blurred sea shouts out, I've been photoshop'd. I would suggest blending a semi-blurred sky which could be captured during the original image capture. Made me think about capturing various images of a scene for future use like blending... Thx

I Lv U ! Seriously tho' I agree it is subjective, I just don't think it looks right with a blurred sky, however I do think on the edit the sea looked darker than the sky, or maybe it's my screen, but easy enough to correct I suppose. Long exposure or normal exposure on the water, but always the normal exp for the sky for me... Great tips, Thnx

I really like the long exposure from the sky however I think you have a point. To do a long exposure with water and sky is too much. Do a long exp. with water then short exp. with sky. Save the sky long exp. for land shots. Just a thought, will have to try. Great video.

Hi Rob/Helen :) I don't use LR because it's slow compared to using Bridge and PS. Plus you can't use the same level of automation in LR. I catalogue my images on my hard drives or you can use Bridge in the same way you use LR. Hope this makes sense

Hello Gary, I loved this video. I've tried doing this myself with a shot on a beach with a rock as the main subject. I found that my tripod had moved ever so slightly and the rocks had gone out of sync. Even with the auto align in photoshop, I couldn't get them to be perfect. Still got a lovely image, but if I were to blow it up to a bigger size, the issue becomes very obvious. Could you make a video on what you do to keep your tripod still while taking log exposures on beaches (moving sands and right by the waves). I've seen Mr Heaton using CD's at the base but never quite understood why...

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  5 лет назад +1

Thomas uses CD's to spread the weight. It stops the legs sinking that's all. Personally, I just dig the legs firmly in and wherever possible, avoid wet sand or sand where the tide still covers it, if you know what I mean? Hope this makes sense :)

Gary, once again an excellent tutorial (even though I use Darktable (Linux) which is not layer-based!). Regarding the b&w image with the spinning wheel - to my eye the completely blurred wheel against the sharper sky was a bit jarring. Perhaps a third image of a semi-blurred wheel could have been layered in???

That's easy Ady. Simply draw a line through the ground or hills above the horizon if that makes sense?

I seriously have to say that I hate the sky in the image with the ferris wheel. It's far too bright and far too stable for the entire image.
Just my personal opionion. I see why you're doing this and the results are often amazing (I do it myself from time to time) but at this particular image. Ngrh.
The water with all the blurry sky (9:10 for that specific picture). It looks so much better!
    But great work!
Would have loved to see a colorized version of that specific photograph ... :D

It's all subjective. I'm happy that you don't like the Ferris wheel shot because it's not for everyone. I just thought it added a little something to the post-processing. Anything and everything is an option. More importantly, I thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers 👍

      Yeah!
I'm always happy to give away my opinions since I think that we can only grow if we tell them.
They give ideas and stuff! :)
For me it's basically vice versa: I like blurry clouds and stuff BUT (!) I do also post process with still clouds sometimes, while you seem to do it the other way around. And that's fantastic. That makes art - expressing yourself through your device/tool whatever that may be. Also, this means that every person is different and likes different things, which - in turn - leads to conversations like this and to exchange of information and knowledge as well as ideas.
And I'm so happy, that there are people out there actually acknowledging this and being creative with that kind of open mind! :)

Where abouts are you on this Gary? I'm currently looking for a coastal location with a pier for a project in starting on water. Ta.

Hi Chris, Blackpool as Pat said. There are plenty of cracking piers around the UK though. Just go when the tide is in

    Why not luminosity masks

I always opt for the best and quickest methods. I use luminosity masks from time to time

Personally I hate the long exposure of water. Misty looking waterfalls and flat milky oceans do nothing for me and I think the technique is vastly over used to the point of cliché.
