    Katanas may be able to cut through time and space but rapiers can reach through it.

    After reading Gigantti's second book, it got me thinking about seeing some rapier and buckler fighting. Most Masters say to just use it like a dagger so it might be an enlightening experience.

    Kudos to your opponent for getting in there and trying stuff. A lot of people up against someone they know is significantly better than them will get very hesitant.
    Better to do and learn.

    It seemed that the open location really tipped the contest in favor of the rapier.
    For the shorter blade to have a better opportunity to get in close to its optimal distance a more constrained environment would have assisted.
    The opposite would have been fencing in one end of a hallway in your castle. A greater challenge than using a rapier in an open field, one on one. No doubt, given your acknowledged prowess, something that could be overcome, but a more even testing ground.
    Good to see mixed weapon fighting. Different locales, including space constrained ones and ones with different levels (so rarely done) would be most welcome.

    Great video! It looks like a masterclass on how to use the reach advantage in your favour. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how was fencing against both weapons.

    • @scottmacgregor3444

      Having done rapier vs longsword, and seen it discussed: A lot of people think the longsword will have a significant reach advantage. It doesn't (barring outliers in length). The longsword's two handed grip reduces your reach.
      The biggest issue I had fencing that match up was trying to figure out how to land a hit or thrust I such a way as to not allow an afterblow from the longsword. Because the longsword has a definite strength advantage in the bind (obv), I can't as easily simply constrain and go in for a thrust, and thrusting without constrainment often opens you up for that afterblow/double.
      And that's assuming the longsword is out there to be constrained, and not in a more retracted position.

    • @scottmacgregor3444
      @scottmacgregor3444 2 года назад

      With a rapier it is possible to block committed cuts from the longsword, but very difficult to do so well, since you need to use a specific section of the blade to have enough strength thar it won't blow through, and doing s often leaves you at a closer range that favors the longsword.
      It is easier to do so with rapier AND dagger, and you can still be a threat when you are close/your point is past the opponent.
      Better yet, my bullhorn quilons on my dagger can trap the longsword for long enough to land a hit safely.

      @@scottmacgregor3444 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It sounds like rapier v longsword is a closer match as the rapier has better reach and hand protection v the greater leverage of the ls. With the dagger, you gain a stronger tool for the bind.

    What kind of Sabre is that? It looks much thinner than the kvetun-armoury Easton Sabre. How would the match be different if the Sabre was closer to an antique? E.g. a 1788 British cavalry Sabre? It looks like the Sabre is just a short rapier, but I can’t see it well enough. Also, I don’t know very much about Sabre, is the fencer using a Sabre style? Thanks! Keep up the great content!

      I don't know much about his saber other than to say it is a dueling saber. It has less mass than a 1788 and therefore can be moved much more quickly.

    Interesting, however, it would be more interesting to see how you manage sabre VS rapier tan the other way around. Your opponent is cool but kept using the same tactic of attempting to close, searching for your blade, which wasn't in line, maybe he should have tried to wait for you to attack, sometimes, and parry and riposte.

  • @SamStuart07
    @SamStuart07 2 года назад +2

    All stop hits and maybe one or two parry-riposte. However, YOU never stand still in fencing. I am surprised your opponent didn't hit because you stood still so much.
    In another video, you stated you have 35 years of experience thus it certainly shows in this video.

    • @logansites
      @logansites 2 года назад +1

      I mean, he can stand still and only back up because he has a huge reach advantage. Most of the video is him keeping his sword out of presence, stepping back to void, and then a slight lean to thrust. His opponent did a poor job of working to get his sword online to try to control it in an advantageous way. But in his opponents defense it's an uphill battle to overcome that natural disadvantage.

      @@logansites I suspect fighting on damp grass didn't help too much either. Getting I on superior reach is doubly hard when you can't get enough purchase on the ground to close quickly, and Rob had effectively unlimited space to retreat until his chance came, so no cornering him either.

  • @michaelrizzo5523
    @michaelrizzo5523 2 года назад

    Very nice! You controlled the distance very gracefully (experience shows) to take advantage of your longer reach (a few inches in blade length plus the extra reach of the thrust), though I think you had to parry a bit wider. And the "no tell" thrust is still magic. It would be interesting to see this against a heavier, curved saber that hits harder and can get its tip around guards, though you'd have potentially even more reach advantage.

  • @ElDrHouse2010
    @ElDrHouse2010 2 года назад +1

    Spar with Matt Easton one day. OR if you want an uneven fight to challenge yourself consider sparrying vs a spear. Maybe for the next video.
    This felt easier for you than the Longsword fight, might be because the Longsword is:
    1) Longer than the Sabre
    2) Bulkier its easier to control blades with the thicker blade
    3) Less tiresome for the user because it's two-handed, it is honestly more amateur friendly due to how it is balanced
    That being said the Sabre is a superb weapon, I love the Rapier 1st but my 2nd choice sword would be the Sabre easily. I like one-handers I think they have more versatility especially due to dual wielding combinations, it opens up more possibilities & angles of attack/defense. Miyamoto Musashi was right.

    I’ve watched this quite a few times, something was bugging me.
    I feel I have distilled out a subtile kinesiology observation.
    Your upper body mechanics are well,integrated, so that’s not it.
    It’s your core.
    By your movements, I can see that you have well developed rectus abdominals, that’s not it..
    I’ll borrow from JKD (of course) - at the initiation of movement of a limb, is the highest peak force, after we get our arms or legs moving, it’s mid course correctors that assist in placing our limb in space.
    The second peak force is the withdrawal or pull back.
    The initiation of a lunge has similar biomechanics to a kick, it’s just without full leg extension.
    The initial hitch off the ground is peak force, then the leg and torso glides.
    Simplified:
    Perform heavy, near isometric exercise from a standing position, with opposing force directed strait down, like heavy weights on your ankle.
    The Quadratus Lumborum (QL) is the deepest back muscle and originates from the iliac crest and inserts on the transverse process of lumbar one through five and the lower part of the twelfth rib, strengthening that will make your lunges(and kicks) less laggy.
    Perform side planks to get a tighter hip/ torso fusion, our bodies are like a slinky, our core is like rubber bands keeping the slinky from flopping and shifting.
    Look for Bruce Lees un- blockable strike demo vid from the late 60’s, observe his solid core strength.
    (And work your glutes)
